Can Tuna Make Cats Sick? What Cat Owners Should Know

Tuna is not a complete cat food, and regular feeding carries particular concerns for kittens. Learn why a small taste is different from using tuna as a meal.

Yes. Tuna can be harmful to cats, especially when it is fed regularly or used as a main diet. Human tuna is not nutritionally complete for cats, and veterinary sources warn of specific risks, including mercury concerns for kittens and reports of serious neurological disorders in some cats that ate canned fish products made for people. The available guidance does not establish that every small taste causes illness or define a safe tuna serving for an individual cat.

Why tuna meant for people is not a cat food

Cats need a balanced range of nutrients, not simply a source of protein. Commercial cat foods are formulated to provide that balance. Cornell University’s Feline Health Center recommends choosing food with a nutritional adequacy statement showing it is complete and balanced for the cat’s life stage: Feeding Your Cat.

Human tuna does not provide that assurance, so it should not replace a cat’s regular, complete diet. Cornell also cautions that some cats consuming canned fish products made for humans have developed potentially serious neurological disorders. That warning describes reported harm; it does not say that every cat that tastes tuna will become ill.

What the guidance says about kittens and mercury

VCA Animal Hospitals warns that regularly feeding tuna to kittens is dangerous because of its mercury content, and notes that human diets are not nutritionally sound for cats: Feeding Kittens. The warning is specifically about regular tuna feeding to kittens; it does not establish a quantified risk for every cat, tuna product, or serving.

Is a small taste safe?

The veterinary guidance cited here does not specify a safe serving size or frequency for tuna, nor does it provide a dose-response estimate or an incidence rate for neurological illness. It therefore cannot establish an amount that is safe for every cat. The sources also do not show that one small taste inevitably makes a cat sick. Avoid making tuna a routine food, and ask your veterinarian about feeding choices for a kitten, a cat on a therapeutic diet, or a cat with health concerns.

How to choose an everyday diet and treats

Use a commercial cat food labeled complete and balanced for your cat’s life stage as the foundation of the diet. The nutritional adequacy statement on the package helps distinguish a food intended to meet nutritional needs from an occasional treat.

Cornell’s general treat guidance is that treats should be offered only occasionally and should not exceed 10 to 15 percent of a cat’s daily calories. This is guidance for treats generally, not a tuna-specific safe limit. Human tuna should not be treated as a nutritionally complete meal.

When appetite changes need veterinary attention

If your cat is refusing food and losing weight, do not rely on tuna to solve the problem. Appetite loss can have many causes, and Cornell recommends veterinary examination in this situation: Anorexia.
