Yes. Vaping products can harm pets through toxic or irritating liquid ingredients and through device parts that can cause injury or obstruction if chewed or swallowed. If your pet has a seizure, trouble breathing, is unresponsive, or is unconscious, go to the nearest veterinary hospital immediately.
How vaping products can hurt pets
A vape is not a single-ingredient hazard. The liquid may contain nicotine, cannabis-derived ingredients such as THC or CBD, or other active ingredients. The device and its packaging can also be dangerous: batteries, glass, plastic, or metal may cause mouth or gastrointestinal irritation, burns, sharp injuries, or an obstruction if chewed or swallowed. ASPCA describes these risks in its vaping-product guidance.
Products vary, so do not assume a device contains only nicotine or that a nicotine-free product is harmless. ASPCA also notes possible ingredients or contaminants such as mushroom derivatives, kratom, caffeine, other stimulants, flavorings, glycols, glycerin, heating byproducts, and small amounts of device-related heavy metals. The actual risk depends on the product and exposure; the reviewed ASPCA sources do not establish a universal toxic dose or a current incidence figure for vape exposures in pets.
Possible signs of exposure
Nicotine
Nicotine can be absorbed rapidly through the mouth, and signs may start within minutes, according to ASPCA’s 2026 article. Possible signs include vomiting, drooling, agitation, tremors, uncoordinated walking, a rapid heart rate, and changes in breathing. ASPCA’s 2018 e-cigarette article also lists diarrhea, weakness, seizures, low blood pressure, and difficulty breathing among possible effects, including more serious cases.

THC and other contents
THC is a separate concern from nicotine. ASPCA lists marijuana as toxic to dogs, cats, and horses, with delta-9-THC identified as the toxic principle. Possible signs include prolonged depression, vomiting, incoordination, sleepiness or excitation, excessive drooling, dilated pupils, low blood pressure, low body temperature, seizures, and coma; rare deaths are also noted in ASPCA’s marijuana toxicity reference. Other product ingredients can have their own effects, so the label and packaging can help a veterinarian or poison-control specialist assess the exposure.
Signs can differ by substance and amount, and this list is not a checklist that must be complete before you act. A pet that has chewed or swallowed any part of a vape product may need prompt professional advice even if no symptoms are visible.

What to do if your pet may have been exposed
- For a life-threatening sign, leave for a veterinary hospital immediately. ASPCA identifies seizures, trouble breathing, unresponsiveness, and unconsciousness as reasons for immediate hospital care. Call the hospital while you are on your way if practical. See ASPCA’s triage guidance.
- For any suspected chewing, swallowing, or other exposure, call your veterinarian, an emergency veterinary hospital, or ASPCA Poison Control at (888) 426-4435. ASPCA Poison Control operates 24/7, 365 days a year; a consultation fee may apply. Do not wait for symptoms to appear or worsen before seeking guidance.
- Keep the product information available. If you can do so safely, retain the packaging and note what may have been involved, how much may be missing, and when the exposure happened. Tell the veterinary professional your pet’s species and approximate size, along with any signs you have observed.
- Do not try home treatment or induce vomiting unless a veterinary professional specifically directs you. The appropriate response depends on the product and the individual exposure.
How to prevent accidental exposure
- Keep devices, cartridges, liquids, and loose batteries in a closed cabinet or container that pets cannot reach.
- Do not leave vape products on counters, bedside tables, or other surfaces a pet can access.
- Refill or handle liquids away from pets, and clean spills promptly.
- Put used or empty products in sealed, pet-inaccessible trash; an empty cartridge or damaged device can still present a physical hazard.
- Ask household members and visitors to store their products securely as well.
ASPCA’s recommendations are based on secure storage and careful handling, not on a particular brand of container or lockbox. If choosing a storage container, prioritize a closure that stays shut and a location genuinely out of your pet’s reach.
