Sometimes—but “pet-friendly” does not mean dogs can go everywhere. A winery may allow dogs on its patio or lawn while excluding them from the tasting room, caves, production areas, or ticketed events. Check the winery’s current policy for the exact spaces and date you plan to visit, and confirm how it applies to your reservation.
What “pet-friendly” means at a winery
There is no single access rule shared by wineries. Each property sets its own policy, and permitted areas can vary within the same site. A dog might be welcome on a deck but not inside the tasting room, or allowed in a tasting room but barred from caves or production spaces. Hours, events, weather arrangements, and staff instructions can also affect the visit.

For example, Wagner Vineyards in New York allows dogs on the lawn and designated decks during regular business hours, but excludes non-service animals from its combined winery and brewery production building. During after-hours events, dogs are restricted to the lawn. At L’Aventure Winery in Paso Robles, dogs may use a covered patio but cannot enter the caves. Mallow Run Winery in Indiana welcomes leashed dogs on its deck, lawn, and patio, not inside the tasting room, and discourages pets during ticketed summer concerts.
Which areas can dogs enter?
Ask about each part of the visit rather than relying on a general “dog-friendly” label. These winery policies illustrate how different the boundaries can be:

These are examples, not a complete directory or a guarantee of access on a future date. Policies can change, so use the winery’s own current information and ask about any part of the property not clearly covered.
What rules should you expect?
Leash, supervision, and behavior
Several wineries explicitly require dogs to be leashed, attentive supervision, or both. Engelheim Vineyards in Georgia welcomes socialized, well-behaved dogs on leash; staff may make decisions based on a dog’s temperament. Amista Vineyards in Healdsburg, California, and Handley Cellars also specify well-behaved or supervised dogs on leash. Follow staff directions and be prepared to move to another permitted area if your dog or the setting is not working well.

Waste cleanup
Plan to pick up after your dog and bring waste bags. Wagner Vineyards directs guests to put used bags in outdoor trash receptacles. Wimberley Valley Winery in Texas and Engelheim also assign cleanup responsibility to dog owners. Do not assume the winery supplies bags or has a disposal point in every area.

Wimberley Valley describes its property as a working ranch, warns of hazards and uneven ground, and asks visitors to keep dogs away from its animals. Consider whether your dog can manage the terrain and stay calm around resident animals. Outdoor amenities also vary: a patio or yard at one winery does not establish that another has shade, water, or suitable ground.

How do events, reservations, and weather change the plan?
Ordinary access rules may not apply to a special event or a particular tasting format. Wagner restricts dogs to the lawn during after-hours events, while Mallow Run discourages them during ticketed summer concerts. If a tasting includes a cave, production area, vineyard walk, or indoor seating, ask whether your dog can accompany the group throughout or whether part of the experience is off-limits.
Booking requirements are separate from dog access. Amista recommends reservations for groups of one to six and requires them for groups of seven or more, according to its visitor information. Handley Cellars recommends reservations for tastings and requires one for its vineyard stroll and tasting. Ask the winery to confirm both the booking and the dog policy for your specific date, group size, and activity.

How to plan a winery visit with your dog
- Read the winery’s current policy. Look for rules about the tasting room, patio or deck, lawn, caves, production spaces, resident animals, and any limits on hours or events.
- Confirm the exact visit. Contact the winery if the policy is unclear, and ask whether dogs are allowed during your reservation or ticketed event, where they can stay, and whether the whole party can remain together.
- Prepare for the stated rules. Bring a leash and waste bags, and be ready to supervise your dog closely and clean up. Follow any directions about seating or access.
- Match the property to your dog. Consider terrain, hazards, weather exposure, crowd levels, other animals, and whether the winery offers a permitted outdoor area your dog can comfortably use.
- Have a backup plan. If dogs cannot join the planned tasting or event, arrange another activity or care plan. Do not assume it is safe to leave a dog unattended in a vehicle; the winery policies cited here do not establish a universal vehicle-waiting rule.
