Possibly, but there is no reliable blanket yes or no for the whole UK. Whether you can buy and keep a piranha depends on its exact species, where you live, how it is being supplied and the rules for that activity. For England and Wales, check the current species list and licensing guidance before buying; importing a live fish is a separate process that requires authorisation for ornamental use. The cited guidance does not establish that a particular piranha species is exempt or currently in stock at UK retailers.
What determines whether you can buy a piranha?
“Piranha” refers to more than one species, and the relevant rules may depend on the exact fish rather than its common name. Before agreeing to buy one, ask the seller for the scientific name and confirm that the rule you are relying on covers that species and your intended purpose.

For England and Wales, government guidance says a licence is generally needed to introduce and keep non-native fish, while describing exceptions for specified species or purposes, including certain indoor-aquarium and ornamental cases. The linked list must be checked for the exact fish: the available guidance does not establish that piranhas qualify for an exception. See GOV.UK’s guidance on keeping and introducing non-native fish, last updated 23 April 2026.

- Get the exact species name. Do not rely on “piranha” alone; ask the seller to identify the fish precisely.
- Check the current government species list and the purpose of the exception. A listed exception only helps if it applies to that species and the way you plan to keep it. If you cannot confirm that, ask the relevant regulator whether a licence is required before proceeding.
- Verify the seller’s stock and paperwork. The government rules do not confirm which retailers have piranhas available. Ask the seller to explain the fish’s legal basis for sale and provide relevant documentation before you pay or arrange transport.
The retailer’s ability to sell a fish and your eligibility to keep it are related but distinct checks. A reference to piranhas in fish-husbandry guidance for local authorities is not proof that piranhas are generally legal to sell or available in shops.
#1 Best Overall
- High-Quality Materials: Crafted from resin, this Piranha skeleton aquarium decor is highly durable and resistant to breakage or damage. The resin material is aquarium-safe and will not alter water quality, making it suitable for both freshwater and saltwater tanks
- Realistic Design: Aquarium caves replicates the skeleton shape of fish, with a highly realistic form, adding a unique landscape to the aquarium. The surface is smooth and fully protective for pets, ensuring their safety and no scratches when exploring and playing
- Ideal Fish Hiding Spot: Fish hideout for aquarium adopts a hollowed-out frame structure. The gaps between the frame and the interior of the mouth form multiple hiding Spaces, allowing fish to move freely among them. This not only provides them with a sense of security but also stimulates their instinct to explore
- Multi-Functional Use: Bottom of the fish skeleton is designed with a flat base, allowing it to be placed steadily on any surface. In addition to being used in fish tanks, it can also serve as reptile tank accessories, providing them with a space for climbing and hiding
- Great Gift: Measuring 6.8" x 3.1" x 3.1", kathson aquarium hideaway is perfectly sized for small pets like shrimp, small fish, guppies, cichlids, and Neon Tetras. It's ideal for decorating aquatic or reptile habitats and makes a wonderful gift for enthusiasts. Before use, we suggest cleaning and wiping it
Importing a piranha is a separate check
A listing from an overseas seller is not permission to bring a fish into the UK. In England and Wales, live fish imports for ornamental purposes require Fish Health Inspectorate authorisation, and the fish must come from an approved source. Extra rules can apply to non-native species. Review GOV.UK’s live-fish and shellfish import guidance, last updated 5 August 2026, and obtain the required authorisation before arranging an import.
Check invasive-species restrictions for the exact fish
England and Wales impose strict controls on certain listed invasive alien species. Depending on the applicable listing and rules, controls can cover importing, keeping, transporting or selling a species. The sources cited here do not establish that piranhas as a group, or any particular piranha species, are on the relevant list; do not infer a piranha-specific ban from general invasive-species guidance.

Rules differ across the UK
The licensing and import guidance above is specifically for England and Wales. It does not settle the rules for Scotland or Northern Ireland. If you live there, ask the relevant regional authority and fish-health regulator about the exact species and activity before buying, keeping or importing it. General UK import guidance also advises checking the rules that apply to non-native animals; see GOV.UK’s guidance on importing non-native animals, updated 31 December 2020.
