Can You Catch Tapeworms From Your Cat? The Flea Route Explained

The common cat tapeworm does not usually spread through petting. Cats and people acquire it by swallowing an infected flea, so flea control matters.

Usually, no: people do not catch the common cat tapeworm, Dipylidium caninum, simply by petting or handling an infected cat. A person—or a cat—gets this tapeworm by accidentally swallowing an infected flea. Human infections are possible but rare, according to the CDC.

How a cat tapeworm can reach a person

Dipylidium caninum is a common tapeworm of cats and dogs. It needs a flea as an intermediate host: tapeworm eggs pass into the environment in segments or feces, flea larvae ingest the eggs, and the parasite develops as the flea matures. A cat usually becomes infected by swallowing an infected flea while grooming. A person would have to swallow an infected flea as well; ordinary contact with the cat is not the route described by the CDC lifecycle guidance.

CDC says human infection is rare, though reported in different parts of the world. Reported cases are more often in children. This is not a reason to panic if a cat has tapeworms, but it is a reason to control fleas and keep children from accidentally ingesting them.

What tapeworm segments look like

Owners may spot segments crawling near a cat’s anus or in fresh stool. Dried segments can look like small grains of rice. If you see something suspicious, take a clear photo or show the material to your veterinary team and describe where and when you found it.

Veterinarians often rely on an owner noticing segments to identify Dipylidium; routine fecal exams do not typically detect its eggs. A negative routine fecal exam therefore does not, by itself, rule out this tapeworm. The CDC explains these signs and diagnostic limits in its pet and human infection guidance.

What to do if your cat may have tapeworms

  1. Contact your veterinarian. Share what you saw and ask whether your cat needs an examination or treatment. A veterinarian can choose appropriate treatment; do not use a human medicine or guess a pet dose.
  2. Address fleas as well as the tapeworm. Treating the tapeworm and controlling fleas solve different parts of the problem. Cornell notes that reinfection is common, so ask your veterinarian about flea control suited to your cat and household.
  3. Clean up waste and wash hands. Promptly remove pet feces, keep children away from fecally soiled play areas, and wash hands after handling pets or playing outdoors, as the CDC recommends.

A flea comb can help you inspect a cat for fleas or remove some fleas, but it is not a tapeworm treatment and should not be treated as a complete flea-control plan.

How to reduce the chance of human infection

The most important prevention step is effective flea control. CDC calls flea control the most effective way to prevent Dipylidium infection in pets and people. Combine a veterinarian-guided flea plan with prompt waste cleanup, handwashing, and keeping children away from contaminated play areas. Human infection occurs through accidental ingestion of an infected flea—not from seeing a segment or touching one.

Is this the same as a human tapeworm from meat?

No. Dipylidium infection is linked to swallowing an infected flea. Human Taenia tapeworm infection is a different concern associated with eating undercooked beef or pork, according to the CDC’s taeniasis guidance. The two routes should not be confused.

Also, do not assume every tapeworm species that affects cats has the same human risk. Cornell notes that cats can acquire tapeworms from infected rodents and that some feline tapeworm species can cause human disease if eggs are accidentally ingested. The specific parasite matters; a veterinarian can help identify what is affecting a cat.

If you see possible segments in a person’s stool

Contact a healthcare professional, especially if the material is in a child’s stool. CDC says human dipylidiasis is diagnosed clinically and a provider may examine a stool sample; treatment can be prescribed by a clinician. Do not try to diagnose or treat a person based only on a cat’s symptoms. See the CDC guidance for people for more information.
