Who should follow the stricter advice?
Advisories commonly distinguish between the general population and a sensitive population. Michigan also directs additional caution for children and people who are pregnant, breastfeeding, or planning pregnancy.
The exact categories can vary by jurisdiction. If you are cooking for a child or for someone who falls into a sensitive category, use that jurisdiction’s more protective recommendation rather than the general-population limit. If the table says not to eat the fish, do not serve it to that person—or use the fish as pet food as a workaround.

Why are there limits on freshwater drum?
The cited advisories identify PCBs and mercury as important contaminants behind fish-consumption recommendations. The particular contaminant, concentration, meal limit, and affected location depend on the agency’s data and the waterbody.

- Check the advisory before cleaning it for dinner. Record the exact side of the lake, launch area, tributary, bay, or other waterbody description. Confirm the species and any size-specific instruction.
- Keep the fish cold. Put the catch on ice or in a refrigerator as soon as possible. Chilling protects ordinary food quality; it does not change the fish-consumption advisory.
- Clean it promptly. Fillet the fish and follow the applicable authority’s instructions about removing skin and trimming fatty tissue. Different advisories may give different preparation directions.
- Do not eat the organs. Organs should not be treated as table fare. Use the edible fillet portion addressed by the relevant advisory.
- Cook the fillet normally and thoroughly. A food thermometer can help check ordinary cooking safety, but it cannot detect or remove PCBs, mercury, or other environmental contaminants.
- Track the meal. If the advice is one meal per month, that is the limit for the applicable person and location—not a suggestion that can be reset by freezing, trimming, or cooking the fish differently.
If you clean your own catch, a fish fillet knife is a practical tool for removing the fillet and trimming it as the applicable advisory directs. It is only a preparation tool: no knife, scaler, or cooking method makes a fish safe when the advisory says “do not eat.”
Should you feed Lake Erie sheepshead to a dog or cat?
A human fish-consumption limit is not a pet-feeding recommendation. Do not give a dog or cat a freshwater drum from an unknown location, a fish covered by a “do not eat” advisory, organs, or bones. Human meal-frequency guidance also cannot be converted reliably into a safe portion for a pet.
If you want to offer fish to a pet, ask your veterinarian about an appropriate, boneless product or treat instead. Never use pet feeding as a way to avoid a fish advisory or dispose of a restricted catch.

Fishing rules are a separate issue
A fish can be edible in principle and still be illegal to keep. Check the regulations for the jurisdiction where the fish was caught, not where you plan to cook it.
- Pennsylvania: a Lake Erie permit is required in addition to a fishing license for Lake Erie, Presque Isle Bay, and covered tributaries.
- Ontario: Canadian Lake Erie waters are regulated through Fisheries Management Zone 19.
- Ohio, New York, and Michigan: consult the current jurisdiction-specific fishing regulations for seasons, limits, size rules, and any location restrictions.
When an advisory and a fishing regulation seem to point in different directions, treat them as two questions: the regulation determines whether you may catch and retain the fish; the advisory determines whether and how often it should be eaten.
A quick keep-or-eat decision
Eat only if all of these are true:
- You correctly identified the fish as freshwater drum.
- You know the exact jurisdiction and waterbody where it was caught.
- The current advisory permits consumption for that location, species, size, and eater category.
- The fish was legally caught and retained.
