Can You Get Pet Insurance for a Senior Pet With a Pre-Existing Condition?

A senior pet may still qualify for a new policy, but the existing condition and related care are often excluded. Learn what to check before enrolling.

Often, yes—but enrolling an older pet usually does not mean the insurer will cover a condition the pet already has. Many insurers exclude the diagnosed condition and related care while still allowing coverage for unrelated future accidents or illnesses. Whether your pet can enroll, and what a policy will cover, depends on its age, medical records, location, and the policy’s terms.

Can an older pet still qualify for a new policy?

Some insurers limit the age at which a pet can first be insured. Progressive’s 2025 consumer guidance says these limits are often set at 10, but that is a general description—not a universal cutoff. Check the insurer’s current rules for your pet’s species, age, breed, and state. Progressive also notes that premiums for senior pets may be higher; the actual price requires a quote. Progressive’s guide to insurance for older dogs and cats discusses age, cost, and switching considerations.

“Senior” is not a single biological age. Progressive attributes to the American Veterinary Medical Association the description of age 7 as a common senior threshold for dogs and cats, with variation by breed. That is a broad guideline, not a universal cutoff for health or insurance eligibility.

Will insurance cover the condition your pet already has?

Usually, you should expect a known pre-existing condition—and care related to it—to be excluded. Insurers may define pre-existing conditions to include an injury, illness, symptom, or irregularity that existed, was noticed, treated, or showed signs before the policy began or before its waiting period ended. A formal diagnosis is not always necessary: earlier symptoms can matter even if the cause was identified later. Insurers may review medical records to determine whether a new claim relates to those earlier signs. Progressive’s explanation of pre-existing conditions describes how symptoms and waiting periods can affect claims.

For example, if your pet had limping or joint symptoms before coverage, a later arthritis diagnosis or treatment may be excluded under the policy’s rules. The same principle may apply to conditions such as diabetes, allergies, or heart or kidney disease. The exact scope varies: an exclusion might address the diagnosed condition, related conditions, symptoms, or—in some policies—conditions affecting both sides of the body. Ask how the insurer will classify your pet’s specific history rather than assuming that only the diagnosis itself is excluded.

A pre-existing condition does not automatically rule out coverage for every future problem. An unrelated injury or illness may still be eligible, subject to the policy’s exclusions, waiting periods, limits, and other terms. But a later episode or diagnosis that may be connected to the existing condition is not automatically covered.

Can an excluded condition become eligible later?

Some insurers describe reviews for certain curable conditions after a period without symptoms or treatment. Their rules differ, and they are not a universal industry standard. Chronic, recurrent, or incurable conditions may remain excluded.

ASPCA Pet Health Insurance

ASPCA says an eligible curable condition may no longer be considered pre-existing if it has been cured and the pet has had no symptoms or treatment for 180 days. Its description excepts knee and ligament conditions. Check the applicable policy form for the exact definition and exclusions. ASPCA’s explanation of pre-existing conditions also notes that a pet may still enroll for other accidents and illnesses.

Embrace

Embrace says eligible curable conditions may be considered after 12 consecutive months without symptoms or treatment. It says conditions considered incurable, recurrent, or chronic may be permanently excluded if noted before the waiting period ends. Embrace also says customers can request a medical-history review after purchasing. Embrace’s pre-existing-condition guidance explains its approach.

AKC Pet Insurance

AKC advertises a pathway for curable and incurable pre-existing conditions after 365 days of continuous coverage. The insurer says availability varies by state and that plan limits and exclusions apply. Treat this as an advertised, conditional exception—not a guarantee that your pet’s particular condition will be covered. Ask for the current policy form and state-specific terms. AKC’s pre-existing-condition page sets out the offer and its qualifications.

MetLife Pet

MetLife describes circumstances in which a later curable incident may be covered if medical records show it is unrelated to the earlier one. It says chronic pre-existing conditions are generally excluded and describes a possible continued-coverage arrangement for some employees switching through an employer plan. These are conditional situations, not blanket coverage promises. MetLife’s pre-existing-condition guidance explains its terms.

  • Eligibility: Ask about the maximum age for new enrollment, species and breed rules, location restrictions, and other underwriting requirements.
  • Exclusion scope: Get the insurer to explain whether the exclusion covers only the named diagnosis or also symptoms, related conditions, bilateral conditions, or an affected body system.
  • Curable-condition review: Ask which conditions can be reviewed, what counts as cured, how long the pet must be symptom- and treatment-free, and which conditions remain excluded.
  • Waiting periods: Find out which conditions have waiting periods and how symptoms that arise during one affect later claims.
  • Financial terms: Compare the quoted premium, deductible, reimbursement rate, annual or per-condition limits, and renewal terms. A senior-pet price depends on the individual quote.
  • Continuity if switching: A new insurer may classify a condition covered by your current provider as pre-existing. Ask whether a continuity arrangement is available and whether your pet qualifies.

Before buying, request a written explanation of how the insurer would treat the specific diagnosis, earlier symptoms, related conditions, and waiting periods. Obtain a current quote and the policy form that applies in your state. Marketing statements can describe an insurer’s general approach, but the policy and the pet’s records determine how a claim is handled.

When a policy may still make sense

If the known condition is excluded, weigh the premium against the coverage available for unrelated future accidents and illnesses. Consider whether the deductible, reimbursement, limits, and renewal terms fit your budget and the risks you want to cover. If the policy does not make financial sense for your situation, ask your veterinarian about payment plans or local assistance options.
