Sometimes. An older pet may qualify for a new policy, and a pet with a known health problem may be accepted, but that problem is often excluded from coverage. Getting a policy and getting a particular condition covered are separate questions. Eligibility and exclusions depend on the insurer, policy, location, and your pet’s medical history.
Can an older pet get a new insurance policy?
Possibly. Insurers set their own age and eligibility rules, and those rules can vary by location and policy. The Illinois Department of Insurance cautions that older pets may no longer qualify for some coverage or may need a senior plan. In contrast, UK provider PDSA says older dogs can apply at any age, subject to eligibility. Neither example establishes a universal age limit or guarantee of acceptance.
Check the insurer’s current rules for your pet’s species, age, and location before relying on a quote. Ask whether the age rule applies only to new enrollment or also affects renewal, and get the answer in writing.
Will a policy cover a pre-existing condition?
Often, it will not cover the condition that was already present when coverage began. A policy may still cover unrelated eligible problems, subject to its terms. Buying insurance after a diagnosis does not make that existing condition covered.

How an insurer defines “pre-existing” matters. It may look at when symptoms first appeared, not just when a veterinarian made a diagnosis. Prudent Pet’s sample-policy information, for example, includes conditions with signs before the effective date or during the waiting period. PDSA says its policy considers prior symptoms, illness, or injury, and that conversations about the pet’s health with a veterinarian or another professional may be considered. These are provider-specific examples; read the actual policy and ask how it applies to your pet’s records.
Some providers may make exceptions for certain cured or inactive conditions, but this is not a standard industry rule. AKC Pet Insurance says some pre-existing conditions may be eligible after 365 days of continuous coverage. That is a provider-specific provision, not a guarantee: AKC directs customers to state-specific sample policies, and applicable forms and conditions matter.
What should you check before enrolling?
Do not rely on a quote or a general statement that the insurer “covers” your pet. Ask for the policy wording and, where possible, a written decision addressing the condition by name. Compare the terms that determine whether a claim could be paid:
- Age and enrollment eligibility: Confirm that your pet can enroll at its current age and whether the rule changes at renewal.
- Pre-existing-condition definition: Ask whether symptoms, veterinary notes, prior consultations, or signs during a waiting period can trigger an exclusion.
- Condition-specific exclusions: Request the exact exclusions that would apply to your pet, including whether an exclusion is temporary or permanent and what evidence could change it.
- Waiting periods: Check when accident and illness coverage begins and whether a waiting period applies to orthopedic conditions or other categories.
- Ongoing and chronic conditions: Confirm whether a condition that first develops after enrollment can continue to be covered at renewal, and what could interrupt that coverage.
- Financial terms: Compare deductibles, reimbursement percentages or benefit schedules, and per-condition, annual, or lifetime limits.
- Claim payment: Verify whether the insurer pays the veterinarian directly or reimburses you after you pay the bill, and what records the claim requires.
For context, Illinois Department of Insurance consumer guidance describes typical waiting periods as 2–14 days for accidents and 14–30 days for illnesses. Those are general ranges, not guaranteed terms for a particular policy or state. Prudent Pet’s sample information, for example, lists five days for accidents and 14 days for illnesses; its samples may not include state-specific variations.

What if your pet already has insurance?
Check renewal and continuity terms before switching plans. Illinois warns that some companies may treat a condition treated during a prior policy term as pre-existing, even if you stay with the same plan. A new insurer may assess documented symptoms or treatment differently, so switching could affect coverage for an ongoing problem.
Rules can also depend on where the policy is governed. In Delaware, state law says a condition covered under a policy may not be treated as pre-existing at renewal; it also places on the insurer the burden of proving that a pre-existing-condition exclusion applies to a claimed condition. Delaware law permits an illness or non-accident orthopedic waiting period of up to 30 days, prohibits accident waiting periods, and bars applying a waiting period to renewal coverage. These are Delaware-specific protections, not nationwide rules. Check your state’s law and your contract before making a change.

How coverage works in practice
Even when a condition is not excluded, reimbursement depends on the policy’s covered expenses, limits, deductible, and claim rules. For example, Prudent Pet’s sample information lists diagnostics, surgery, hospitalization, and prescription medication among expenses that may be eligible for covered illnesses, subject to limits and exclusions. The same sample excludes routine and preventive treatment unless optional wellness coverage applies. Those details illustrate one provider’s sample, not a promise about other policies.
Illinois consumer guidance describes a common claims process in which the owner pays the veterinarian, submits a claim form and supporting records, and receives reimbursement afterward. Verify your own policy’s payment method and documentation requirements before assuming the insurer will pay a clinic directly.

What if no policy covers the existing condition?
You may still be able to insure your pet for eligible future problems that are unrelated to the exclusion. Before enrolling, get the excluded condition and any related symptoms or complications clearly identified in writing. Then decide whether the remaining covered benefits, limits, deductible, and premium fit your needs; do not count on the policy to pay for treatment the insurer has excluded.
