Sometimes—but only with a veterinarian’s guidance. Paw licking, redness, odor, brown staining, or moist skin can fit a yeast infection, but these signs do not confirm one. A veterinarian can examine the paws and check a skin sample. If the problem is localized, they may recommend a topical treatment you can apply at home; persistent, widespread, painful, or recurring symptoms may need additional treatment and investigation of the underlying cause.
Can you treat a dog’s paw yeast infection at home?
A veterinarian may recommend home treatment after assessing the dog and deciding that Malassezia dermatitis is the likely cause. For localized disease, treatment may be topical, with instructions tailored to the paw and the product. Do not treat suspected yeast disease with a home-mixed soak, a human medication, or oral antifungal medicine unless your veterinarian specifically directs you to do so.
More severe, chronic, widespread, or persistent disease may require prescription oral antifungal medication, sometimes alongside topical care. Longer courses can cause side effects and may require veterinary monitoring.
How can you tell if the paws have a yeast infection?
Possible signs include frequent licking or chewing, redness or moisture between the toes, brown staining, odor, hair loss, inflammation around the nails, and sometimes painful sores. These signs are clues, not a diagnosis: other paw and skin problems can look similar.

Malassezia pachydermatis can live on normal skin. The World Association for Veterinary Dermatology guideline reports that cited studies detected it on the interdigital skin of approximately 60–70% of sampled healthy dogs. That is a finding of colonization, not the percentage of dogs with an infection.
How a veterinarian checks for yeast
A veterinarian can examine the paws and assess a skin sample under a microscope. Cytology helps determine whether yeast is present at a site with compatible lesions in a clinically meaningful amount. If cytology does not support Malassezia, the diagnosis may need to be reconsidered or the site sampled again.

What treatments might a veterinarian recommend?
Choice depends on where the lesions are, how extensive or severe they are, and whether the product can be applied as directed. Topical antifungal products are commonly used because Malassezia affects the outer skin layer. Available forms include shampoos, gels, lotions, sprays, creams, and wipes; the right formulation and directions depend on the veterinary assessment.
Topical treatment for localized disease
The World Association for Veterinary Dermatology consensus guideline identifies shampoo containing 2% miconazole plus 2% chlorhexidine, used twice weekly, as the topical option with strong evidence in canine Malassezia dermatitis. The guideline says it may be considered a first choice where locally approved and available, and when an owner can apply it effectively. This is a guideline finding, not a prescription for every dog or every paw-only case; a veterinarian may choose another formulation for the location.

Follow the product-specific directions your veterinarian provides. Do not assume that wipes, creams, or other chlorhexidine or azole products have the same evidence as the shampoo combination: the guideline notes that treatment trials are limited, and not all topical products have been evaluated.
When systemic treatment may be needed
For severe, chronic, widespread, or persistent disease, a veterinarian may prescribe an oral antifungal, with or without topical care. Because extended oral treatment can have side effects and may require monitoring, it is not a suitable do-it-yourself alternative to an examination.

What one trial does—and does not—show
In one controlled trial cited by the 2020 consensus guideline, a 3% chlorhexidine shampoo was more than 50% effective in 18 of 22 treated dogs. Four dogs had transient, self-limiting side effects. This result applies to that study; it does not show that every chlorhexidine product is interchangeable or that the same result should be expected for an individual dog.

Malassezia dermatitis often occurs alongside an underlying skin condition, including allergic dermatitis. If a predisposing problem remains, symptoms can recur even after the yeast-related inflammation improves. The consensus guideline notes that complete elimination of Malassezia is unrealistic because it is part of normal skin microflora; care aims to control clinical disease and address factors that allow overgrowth.

For recurring symptoms, ask the veterinarian whether the original diagnosis remains supported and whether an underlying skin problem needs attention. Treating yeast alone may not provide lasting control when the cause of repeated flare-ups is still present.
When should you contact a veterinarian?
Arrange an examination for persistent or excessive licking or chewing, strong odor, worsening redness, sores, pain, recurrence, or symptoms that do not improve with an established treatment plan. Open or painful areas deserve prompt attention. Untreated skin disease can worsen, and the visible signs alone cannot distinguish yeast from other causes.
Quick Recap
- Seek veterinary advice promptly if the paw is painful, has open sores, or is getting worse.
- Book an examination if licking, odor, redness, or staining persists or keeps returning.
- Contact the veterinarian who prescribed treatment if it is not helping or is difficult to apply as directed.
