The most useful treatment plan for a dog with osteoarthritis (OA) is usually individualized and multimodal: veterinary-directed pain control, a healthy lean weight, suitable activity, and practical support at home. No single medicine is best for every dog, and pain relief can improve comfort without curing or reversing joint disease. Work with your veterinarian to choose treatments and track changes in your dog’s everyday abilities.
How should treatment begin?
Start with a veterinary assessment of your dog’s pain, mobility, overall health, and medical history. Other health problems and medicines can affect which options are appropriate. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) estimates that OA affects at least 25 percent of dogs at some point in their lifetime (2023).

Agree on practical goals with the veterinarian, such as getting up more comfortably, walking, using stairs, playing, sleeping well, or showing more willingness to move. These observations help you discuss whether the plan is working; they are not a substitute for an examination or a reason to change a medicine’s dose on your own.

Which pain-control options might a veterinarian consider?
Two options discussed in U.S. veterinary guidance are nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) and bedinvetmab, sold as Librela. Their route, schedule, monitoring, and suitability differ. This is a comparison of general features, not a ranking or a recommendation for an individual dog.

| Option | Purpose and administration | Important considerations |
|---|---|---|
| Veterinary-prescribed NSAID | Can help control OA pain and inflammation. Available products and routes vary. | The FDA lists carprofen, deracoxib, firocoxib, grapiprant, meloxicam, and robenacoxib among marketed U.S. NSAID active ingredients for dogs. No one NSAID is considered more effective or safer than all others for every dog. The veterinarian may recommend blood and urine tests before treatment and periodic tests and checkups during long-term use. |
| Librela (bedinvetmab) | A prescription injection given under the skin by a veterinarian once monthly in the United States. It is intended to control pain associated with OA. | The FDA says it may take two monthly injections to see reduced pain. Its label says it does not treat, slow, or reverse arthritis progression. The veterinarian should review the client information sheet and discuss the dog’s response before continuing. |
How can NSAIDs be used safely?
Give an NSAID only as prescribed and follow its label and your veterinarian’s instructions. Tell the veterinarian about all prescription and over-the-counter medicines your dog receives; some combinations can be harmful. Do not change the dose, combine NSAIDs, or add another drug without veterinary guidance.
If a veterinarian decides to switch NSAIDs, the FDA advises that only one NSAID be given at a time and that the veterinarian recommend an appropriate washout period. The right medicine and monitoring plan depend on the individual dog.

What should owners know about Librela?
The FDA approved Librela in the United States in 2023 for control of OA-associated pain in dogs. Bedinvetmab binds canine nerve growth factor, a protein involved in pain signaling. FDA information describes evidence from two field studies and reports effectiveness when at least two doses were administered 28 days apart. The injection is prescription-only and administered monthly by a veterinarian.

The FDA client information sheet says Librela can alleviate arthritis pain for one month after an injection, but does not treat, slow, or reverse arthritis progression; it may take two monthly injections to see reduced pain. Pain relief can also let a previously inactive dog become more active before its body is ready. Agree on a gradual activity plan with the veterinarian rather than allowing a sudden return to strenuous exercise.

Safety signs and health history to discuss
A safety-label update published by the FDA on February 18, 2025, lists reported events including balance problems, trouble walking, weakness, trouble standing, seizures, increased drinking or urination, loss of bladder control, vomiting, and diarrhea. The label warns that serious adverse reactions can occur and may result in death or euthanasia. Post-approval reports do not always establish how often an event occurs or prove that the medicine caused it. Contact your veterinarian if you notice concerning signs.
The label says Librela should not be given to dogs under 12 months old, dogs intended for breeding, or pregnant or nursing dogs. A dog with new or recently changed health problems may need further assessment. Before treatment, tell the veterinarian about your dog’s health history and all medicines, supplements, preventives, and other monoclonal antibody treatments.

How do weight and diet fit into an OA plan?
Maintaining a lean body condition and considering dietary needs are important non-drug parts of chronic pain management, according to the American Animal Hospital Association (AAHA). AAHA cites veterinary longitudinal cohort evidence supporting lean body condition and lifetime caloric restriction in connection with reduced OA progression and longer lifespan. If weight loss is appropriate, ask your veterinarian to help set a safe plan for your dog; it is a health intervention, not a matter of blame.

What activity or rehabilitation may help?
The international COAST consensus guideline recommends an exercise program tailored to the dog’s breed, life stage, lifestyle, and needs. A veterinarian can advise whether to work with a rehabilitation specialist. Supervised and at-home exercise can support strength, muscle tone, and mobility when suited to the dog.
Rehabilitation may include therapeutic exercise, hydrotherapy, manual techniques, or other modalities under appropriate professional guidance. AAHA considers rehabilitation a possible part of comprehensive pain management, while noting that controlled prospective trials in veterinary patients are sparse. Do not start a demanding routine without veterinary advice, particularly if treatment has made your dog feel ready to do more.
Which home changes can make movement easier?
Identify where your dog struggles before changing the home. COAST specifically identifies hard or slippery flooring as a possible problem area. Non-slip runners or traction mats may help with access where slipping is an issue; choose them for the dog’s route and the home’s layout. They are mobility aids, not treatments for the underlying joint disease.

Keep brief notes on the activities that matter to your dog—such as rising, walking, stairs, play, sleep, and willingness to move—and bring those observations to follow-up appointments. COAST recommends owner education, regular clinical reassessment, and monitoring response to ongoing medical management; it gives monthly reassessment as an example during medical management.
If symptoms change or progress stalls, contact the veterinarian to reassess the plan or consider whether further evaluation is needed. Do not independently increase a dose or combine treatments. The COAST guideline is international, but drug availability and approvals vary by country; medication details above describe U.S. FDA approvals and labeling, so confirm local guidance outside the United States.
