No available head-to-head evidence establishes a universal winner for removing pet hair from carpet. The practical choice depends on the job: use a vacuum for routine carpet cleaning, and consider a carpet rake or rubber broom only as a compatible manual supplement—not as a proven replacement for vacuuming.
What each tool is suited to
Vacuum: routine carpet cleaning
Vacuuming has the clearest role in the available carpet-care guidance. The New York State Office of General Services says to “thoroughly vacuum the area” before carpet extraction because removing surface soil improves the final results. That guidance addresses preparation for extraction, not a test of pet-hair removal, but it supports vacuuming as part of routine carpet care.
Carpet rake: targeted grooming or pretreatment agitation
The same New York State manual describes applying detergent solution to carpet, agitating it with a carpet rake, and letting it sit for 10 to 20 minutes before extraction. This is a pretreatment step for heavily soiled areas; it does not show that a rake removes pet hair better than a vacuum or broom.
Rubber broom: a manual surface-cleanup option
A retail listing from the Village of Greenwood Lake markets a rubber broom for pet-hair cleanup on carpet. That establishes how the product is marketed, not independently verified performance. There is no supported basis here for ranking a rubber broom above a rake or vacuum.

How to choose for your carpet
- For routine cleaning: Use a vacuum suited to your carpet and follow the carpet maker’s care directions.
- For a manual grooming or agitation step: A carpet rake has a documented role in agitating pretreatment solution, but its pet-hair effectiveness is not established by that guidance.
- For supplementary surface cleanup: A rubber broom may be an option to try if the carpet manufacturer’s instructions allow it; the available retail listing is not a performance test.
- For any pile or fiber: Check the manufacturer’s cleaning and maintenance instructions before using a manual tool. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission’s general household guidance is to follow manufacturers’ instructions.

The 2009 New York State Office of General Services manual covers vacuuming before extraction and rake agitation during pretreatment. The Consumer Product Safety Commission provides general maintenance advice, not tool comparisons. The retail listing markets a rubber broom for pet hair, but does not independently validate its results.
