Aspidistra elatior, commonly called the cast iron plant, is listed as non-toxic to cats by the ASPCA. Cats Protection also includes Aspidistra in its safe category. That classification does not mean the plant is edible or that chewing it cannot upset your cat’s stomach.
Is a cast iron plant poisonous to cats?
No: the ASPCA identifies the cast iron plant as Aspidistra elatior and lists it as non-toxic to cats. It also lists the common names Bar Room Plant, Iron Plant, and Variegated Cast Iron Plant. Cats Protection likewise places Aspidistra among plants considered safe for cats.

“Non-toxic” is a plant-specific classification, not a promise that a cat can chew any amount without a reaction. The ASPCA cautions that eating any plant material may cause vomiting or gastrointestinal upset in cats. A cat may also react to something on or around the plant, such as fertilizer or insecticide.

- Check the plant’s identity. Confirm that it is Aspidistra elatior, rather than relying on a common name or appearance alone. The ASPCA says its plant database is not all-inclusive and plant appearances may differ from listing photos.
- Move the plant and any care products out of reach. Keep your cat from eating more foliage, soil, fertilizer, or treated leaves. Follow product labels and store fertilizers and insecticides where pets cannot reach them.
- Watch for signs of illness. Vomiting or gastrointestinal upset can occur after eating plant material. Nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and drooling are common outward signs of toxicity in pets, according to Dr. Tina Wismer, senior director of the ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center, in an Associated Press report. Lethargy, depression, or seizures can indicate a more severe problem, Wismer said.
- Call for veterinary guidance if your cat is ill, the plant identity is uncertain, or you are worried. Contact your local veterinarian. The ASPCA also lists its 24-hour emergency poison hotline at (888) 426-4435 for an animal that may have ingested a poisonous substance or for questions about its plant database. A consultation fee may apply. If you contact a veterinarian, Catster recommends bringing a plant sample if possible.
How to avoid confusing it with another plant
Common names are not reliable enough to establish whether an unfamiliar plant is safe. Check the botanical name on a plant label or verify it against a reputable plant listing. The ASPCA notes that its database covers commonly encountered plants rather than every plant, so an absent listing does not establish safety. If you cannot confidently identify a plant, keep it away from your cat until you can check.

Why keeping a non-toxic plant out of reach can still help
A cat can chew foliage, tip a pot, or get into soil and plant-care products. Even when the plant itself is listed as non-toxic, limiting access reduces the chance of stomach upset and avoids risks from products used on or around it. Choose a stable location your cat cannot readily reach, and keep fertilizers and insecticides secured.

What the available figures do—and do not—show
The Associated Press reported that the ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center received more than 31,500 calls in 2021 about pets ingesting potentially toxic indoor and outdoor plants and flowers. That is a historical call count across pets and plants, not a current annual rate and not a count specific to cats or cast iron plants. It offers no estimate of the risk from Aspidistra elatior.
