Cat Arthritis: What Breed Risks Are Actually Supported?

Evidence supports only limited breed-related joint associations—not an eight-breed arthritis list. Learn the signs owners may notice and how to help a cat get evaluated.

There is not enough evidence to name eight cat breeds as generally prone to arthritis. The breed-related links described in veterinary sources are narrower: Maine Coons are more susceptible to hip dysplasia, which can lead to hip osteoarthritis, and a clinical review reports a possible predisposition to elbow osteoarthritis in Burmese cats. Neither association means an individual cat will develop arthritis. Cats of any breed can be affected, so changes in mobility and behavior matter more than a breed list.

What the evidence says about breed and arthritis

The American College of Veterinary Surgeons says that no feline genetic factors have been shown to be associated with the onset of osteoarthritis. That does not rule out specific breed-related orthopedic conditions, but it does mean the evidence does not support an eight-breed arthritis-risk ranking. The two associations described in the available veterinary sources concern particular joints and conditions, not a proven general risk for every cat in a breed.

Breed Association described What it does—and does not—show
Maine Coon Greater susceptibility to hip dysplasia, identified by Cornell as a notable breed disposition linked to feline degenerative joint disease. Hip dysplasia can make hip osteoarthritis more likely; it does not establish that every Maine Coon will develop arthritis or provide a breed-wide incidence rate. Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine and a 2012 clinical review describe this association.
Burmese A 2012 clinical review reports that Burmese cats appear predisposed to elbow osteoarthritis. This is a review-level association, not a certainty for an individual cat or a quantified breed-wide risk. The review does not establish a ranked comparison with other breeds.

Other breed claims should not be treated as established arthritis predispositions without reliable, specific evidence. A joint disorder that can contribute to osteoarthritis is not the same as proof that a breed is generally prone to arthritis.

Signs of arthritis to watch for at home

Cats may adapt their routines rather than limp conspicuously. Changes in ordinary activities can be more revealing than an obvious gait problem. Look for:

In a prospective study of 28 cats already diagnosed with clinical osteoarthritis, 71% showed changes in their ability to jump and 67% showed changes in jump height. These are findings in a small, selected clinical group—not estimates of how common arthritis or these signs are among all cats. The study authors concluded that overt lameness was not the most common clinical feature. Clarke and Bennett, 2006; see also the FDA overview.

How to prepare for a veterinary visit

Breed, age, or a single behavior change cannot confirm arthritis. A veterinarian may consider your account of changes at home alongside a physical and orthopedic examination and radiographs. Home observations are useful because a clinic visit may not show how a cat moves through its usual routines, and imaging is only one part of the assessment. The ACVS overview, FDA guidance, and Cornell’s guidance describe evaluation and care.

  • If practical, take a short video of your cat walking, jumping, or using the litter box at home.
  • Bring the observations to your veterinarian and ask whether further examination or imaging is appropriate.

Ways to make home easier to navigate

Environmental changes can reduce difficult movements and help a cat reach familiar places. The FDA lists low-sided litter boxes, raised bowls, soft bedding, ramps or steps, and exercise or rehabilitation among non-drug strategies. Weight loss may be recommended for an overweight cat. A stable cat ramp or set of steps may help a particular cat reach a high resting place with less jumping; it is an accommodation, not a treatment that prevents or cures arthritis. Choose an option suited to the cat’s balance, mobility, and space.

Treatment and medication decisions

Arthritis care should be tailored by a veterinarian. The American College of Veterinary Surgeons describes multimodal management, which may include weight management and veterinary-selected treatments. The FDA says Solensia (frunevetmab) is approved to treat pain caused by osteoarthritis in cats. Whether any medicine or other treatment is suitable depends on the individual cat and should be discussed with a veterinarian; do not give human painkillers unless a veterinarian specifically directs you to do so.

A 2012 treatment review noted that published evidence for omega-3 diets in feline osteoarthritis was limited and that it found no published data at that time on glucosamine/chondroitin efficacy. That statement describes the evidence the review found in 2012, not a definitive assessment of all evidence available today. The review provides its original discussion.
