Chlorophytum comosum, commonly called spider plant, is listed as non-toxic to cats in ASPCA Poison Control’s current plant-specific entry and ASPCA’s 2026 plant-safety article. That does not guarantee a cat will feel well after chewing it: ASPCA says any plant may cause mild stomach upset, and a 2019 ASPCA article describes spider plant as mildly toxic. Here’s how to understand the conflicting listings and decide what to do after a cat eats some.
Is a spider plant toxic to cats?
ASPCA Poison Control’s current entry classifies spider plant (Chlorophytum comosum) as non-toxic to cats. ASPCA also includes it among non-toxic plants in its April 30, 2026 article, “Do You Know Which Flowers and Plants Are Toxic to Pets? Our Experts Explain!” [ASPCA Poison Control: Spider Plant]
“Non-toxic” is a toxicity classification, not a promise that eating the plant cannot cause any symptoms. ASPCA’s 2026 article notes: “Any plant can cause mild stomach upset when ingested by pets, but the toxic plants listed below are those that can cause significant, potentially life-threatening consequences.”

Why do ASPCA sources disagree?
An ASPCA houseplant article published February 27, 2019 places spider plant in its “Mildly Toxic Plants” section. It says a small ingestion may cause mild gastrointestinal irritation, including vomiting and diarrhea. That conflicts with the current plant-specific entry and the 2026 article, both of which classify spider plant as non-toxic to cats. The sources reviewed do not explain the difference, so the older listing should not be treated as formally corrected or withdrawn.
| ASPCA source | Date | Spider-plant classification |
|---|---|---|
| Plant-specific Poison Control entry | Current entry | Non-toxic to cats |
| “Do You Know Which Flowers and Plants Are Toxic to Pets? Our Experts Explain!” | April 30, 2026 | Lists spider plant among non-toxic plants; notes any plant may cause mild stomach upset |
| “Houseplant Safety” | February 27, 2019 | Calls spider plant mildly toxic and describes possible mild gastrointestinal irritation, vomiting, and diarrhea after small ingestion |
For the current classification, the plant-specific listing and the newer 2026 article agree. Neither establishes a harmful dose for spider plant or a spider-plant-specific prognosis.

What should you do if your cat chewed a spider plant?
- Confirm the plant if possible. The scientific name is Chlorophytum comosum; ASPCA also lists ribbon plant and spider ivy as common names. If you are unsure what the plant is, do not assume the spider-plant classification applies.
- Observe how your cat is doing. A non-toxic classification does not rule out mild stomach upset after chewing a plant.
- Contact a veterinarian if your cat is unwell, the plant identity is uncertain, or the exposure concerns you. ASPCA advises contacting a veterinarian or ASPCA Poison Control when a pet may have ingested a toxic plant. Its guidance does not give a spider-plant-specific dose threshold or treatment protocol.
Do not induce vomiting or give a home remedy based on the available spider-plant guidance. If you seek advice, share the plant’s name or a photo if available, what you observed your cat eat, and any signs of illness.

Look for Chlorophytum comosum on the plant label. Common names can vary; ASPCA’s cat plant list gives ribbon plant and spider ivy as alternate names for spider plant. If the label is missing or the plant looks different from the one you intended to identify, have it identified before relying on this safety classification. ASPCA’s cat plant list is available at Plants Non-Toxic to Cats.
