Some cats choose your clothes because the fabric is soft, warm and carries a familiar human scent. Others prefer a cat bed, a cardboard box, a high shelf, a sunny floor or a completely different place. Many rotate among several spots. Your cat’s choice reflects individual comfort, temperature, security, access and habit—not a proven species-wide preference for laundry or beds.
The useful question is not “Which spot should every cat prefer?” but “What does this cat find comfortable and safe, and how can I provide an acceptable alternative?”

Why your cat may choose your clothes
Clothing can accidentally combine several features cats seek in a resting place. Cats Protection describes soft clothing as potentially comfortable and warm, while a garment worn by a bonded person also carries a familiar scent. Familiar smell may make a cat feel reassured, especially when the garment is in a quiet, undisturbed location.
Softness and insulation
A sweater, T-shirt or pile of laundry conforms to the body and traps heat. Freshly dried clothes can be particularly inviting because they are warm immediately after tumbling. A cat may be responding to texture and temperature rather than choosing “human clothing” as a category.

Familiar human scent
Smell is part of how cats assess places and people. A shirt that smells like you may provide a reassuring cue when your cat is resting. This does not mean every cat prefers dirty laundry: some may find a strong or unfamiliar smell unpleasant, while others may choose clean laundry because it is warm and soft.
What Cats Protection says about laundry
Cats Protection Behaviour Manager Nicky Trevorrow explained the variation this way: “Some cats prefer dirty laundry, just because it smells familiar to them and it has the scent of the owner of them whereas other cats prefer clean laundry and this could because if it’s been freshly tumble dried it’s going to be nice and warm, it’s a safe place to sleep.” The wording reflects an explanation of possible reasons, not a controlled test ranking dirty clothes, clean clothes and beds.
Why a cat bed may still be preferred
A purpose-made bed can offer a stable surface, cushioning, insulation and a predictable resting area. Depending on its design and placement, it can also provide privacy, a roof or sides, elevation, or a clear view of the room. Those features matter when they match the individual cat’s preferences.
Design matters more than the label “cat bed”
One cat may want an open cushion in a quiet corner. Another may settle only in a covered cave. A senior or stiff cat may need a low entrance and firm support, while an agile cat may choose a raised perch. A bed that is comfortable in isolation can still be ignored if it is beside a noisy appliance, in a busy walkway, exposed to drafts or too far from the cat’s preferred height.
Refusal does not prove beds are unsuitable
Cats Protection notes that cats frequently change sleeping locations. A cat that ignores one expensive bed may simply prefer a different temperature, position, texture or level of cover at that moment. It does not establish that every bed is unsuitable, nor does it show that clothes are always better.
How much do cats sleep, and why do they move?
Cats Protection’s current Cats and Sleep guidance gives domestic cats an approximate range of 12 to 18 hours of sleep per day; the organization’s separate 2016 article describes an average of about 16 hours. These figures describe total sleep, not a preference for any particular surface, and they are not results from a clothes-versus-bed experiment.
Sleep location can change with sunlight, room temperature, household activity, time of day and the cat’s need for privacy. Trevorrow summarizes the normal pattern as follows: “Whether it’s a box, the laundry pile or even a suitcase, cats tend to rotate their sleeping place, which is a normal behaviour.” Rotation is therefore expected rather than evidence that a bed has failed.

Compare each spot by the features your cat actually uses
Instead of treating clothing and beds as competing products, assess both locations against the same practical criteria. The table shows what to look for; “depends” is intentional because the evidence does not establish a universal ranking.
| Feature | Your clothes | Cat bed | What to observe |
|---|---|---|---|
| Softness and comfort | Often soft and body-conforming, depending on fabric and pile | Depends on filling, firmness, fabric and wear | Does the cat knead, curl, stretch or settle quickly? |
| Warmth | Can retain body heat; freshly dried laundry may be warm | Depends on insulation, padding and room temperature | Does the cat move toward sunlight, radiators or cooler surfaces? |
| Familiar scent | May carry the owner’s or household scent | May smell new or strongly of manufacturing and detergent | Does the cat investigate and then leave, or relax after sniffing? |
| Safety and cover | Usually open, but a pile can feel enclosing | Can be open-sided or covered | Does the cat seek a roof, sides or an unobstructed view? |
| Elevation | Usually on the floor, bed or chair | May be floor-level or raised | Does the cat regularly choose shelves, furniture or window-level spots? |
| Privacy and noise | Depends entirely on where laundry is left | Can be positioned in a quiet area | Does the cat abandon the spot when people or other pets pass? |
| Access and habit | May be available only when laundry is left out | Can remain available continuously | Can the cat reach it without climbing, squeezing or crossing a busy route? |
Use the comparison as a checklist, not a scorecard
A location can be excellent on one axis and poor on another. A laundry pile may be soft and smell like its owner but sit on a chair that is too exposed. A covered bed may feel secure but be too warm, too low or positioned where another pet blocks the entrance. Notice which combination your cat repeatedly selects instead of awarding points to one category.
Also compare the same cat at different times. A cool, open surface may be preferable after a warm afternoon, while a fleece-lined bed may win overnight. A cat that wants contact while you are home may later choose a private box. These are changes in circumstances, not contradictions.
How to make a new bed more appealing
A bed works best when its location and sensory cues suit the cat. Cats Protection recommends comfortable, soft, quiet, safe, covered or elevated resting options, depending on what the cat prefers.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Watch the existing choice first. Note whether your cat selects warmth, shade, height, a covered edge, a particular fabric or proximity to you. Observe over several days rather than judging from one nap.
- Match the position. Put the bed where the cat already rests or close to that route. A quiet corner can suit a cat seeking undisturbed sleep; a higher, stable surface can suit one that regularly perches above floor level. Keep the bed away from drafts, loud machinery and doors that open frequently.
- Choose the shape for the behavior. Use an open cushion for a cat that sprawls and watches the room, a covered bed or box for one that hides, or a low-entry option for a cat that has difficulty stepping over high sides. A cardboard box with a soft blanket can be a perfectly serviceable resting place.
- Add a familiar scent. Place a blanket, toy or washable fleece that the cat has already used in or on the new bed. Cats Protection specifically suggests familiar cat-scented bedding when introducing a new bed. Avoid forcing the cat into the bed or washing away every familiar smell immediately.
- Keep the route easy. Make sure other pets, children and furniture do not block access. A bed that is technically comfortable but socially exposed may be rejected.
- Leave it available without pressure. Let the cat investigate on its own schedule. Sniffing, sitting briefly or using the bed only at certain temperatures can all be normal early steps.
What to look for when choosing a bed
Start with the features your cat already demonstrates rather than a fashionable shape. A soft, washable cover is practical for regular cleaning, while a blanket can preserve a familiar scent between washes. Consider whether the cat needs an open view, sides for enclosure, a covered hide, floor-level access or an elevated position. If you are unsure, a simple box with a soft blanket lets you test the cat’s response before committing to a more elaborate design.
There is no named commercial model established as a tested best choice for this comparison. Even a well-made bed can be ignored if its placement or shape conflicts with the cat’s habits. Treat product descriptions as features to evaluate, not promises that your cat will switch.
Offer a small menu instead of insisting on one bed
Because cats rotate locations, providing several appropriate options is usually more realistic than trying to make one bed the permanent choice. Options can include a washable cushion, a soft blanket in a quiet corner, a box with a blanket, an elevated perch and a covered resting area. Place them in different parts of the home so the cat can choose between warmth, privacy, height and proximity to people.

Several options do not need to be expensive or identical. A washable cat bed can serve one location, while a washable fleece cat blanket on a stable chair or in a box can provide another. Keep each option clean and intact, but do not remove every familiar odor each time you launder it. The aim is a safe selection of surfaces, not a single officially approved sleeping station.

Cats Protection’s Hide & Sleep® is an example of a design that combines a hiding place, sleeping area and elevated resting spot. It illustrates the features a product can combine; it does not establish that every cat will use that particular design, and current commercial availability is not established here.
If you need to keep clothes off the floor
If laundry is being damaged, covered in hair or left in an unsafe place, provide an alternative before removing access. Put a soft, washable blanket or bed beside the usual clothing spot, add a familiar-smelling item, and keep that alternative available. When the cat uses it, allow the rest to continue without disturbing the animal.
Redirect access consistently: store clothes in a closed hamper or wardrobe, remove them from chairs and beds, and place the approved resting option where the cat was choosing laundry. Do not present this as a guaranteed training protocol. The available guidance supports offering appealing alternatives, not a promise that a cat will switch permanently.
If the cat returns to clothing despite the alternative, reassess the comparison. The garment may be warmer, higher, softer or closer to you than the replacement. Moving the bed, changing its degree of cover or adding a familiar fleece may address the actual preference more effectively than repeatedly buying another design.
How to read your cat’s preference
Look for patterns rather than a single successful nap. A cat that repeatedly returns to a location, relaxes there, grooms, stretches, kneads or sleeps deeply is communicating that the spot meets its needs at that time. A cat that perches briefly, keeps its body tense, watches every movement or leaves when the room changes may be tolerating the location rather than preferring it.
Temperature clues
Track choices across the day and weather. Warm laundry or sunlit beds may win during cool periods, while a tile floor or shaded surface may be preferable when the room is warm. Moving between warm and cool spots is normal self-regulation.

Security and privacy clues
Some cats sleep where they can see entrances and people; others choose a covered box, the back of a closet or the space beneath furniture. A bed with a high wall is not automatically safer if the cat cannot monitor the room, and an open blanket is not automatically inadequate if the cat prefers visibility.
Social clues
A cat may sleep on your clothes because they smell like you, or sleep directly on you for warmth and contact. That choice can coexist with using a separate bed at other times. It is not evidence that the cat is rejecting the household or that the bed has failed.

When a sleeping change may signal a health problem
A sleeping location or posture by itself cannot diagnose illness. The important signal is a sudden or persistent change from the cat’s normal pattern, especially when other changes appear. Cats Protection advises paying attention to signs such as reduced appetite, hiding, lethargy, difficulty moving or altered breathing.
- Contact a veterinarian when a marked sleep change continues or occurs with appetite, movement, hiding or energy changes.
- Seek urgent veterinary help for open-mouth breathing or difficult breathing.
- Do not infer illness from one unusual nap if the cat otherwise behaves normally, eats, moves and returns to its usual routines.
A cat that suddenly abandons high places may be uncomfortable jumping; one that hides continuously may be unwell or distressed. Those patterns need context and professional assessment rather than a conclusion based solely on whether the cat chose clothes or a bed.
Frequently asked questions
Why does my cat sleep in a random place when I bought an expensive bed?
Cats often rotate their sleeping locations. The random place may be warmer, quieter, more familiar-smelling, more private or better positioned than the bed at that moment. Ignoring one bed does not prove that all beds are unsuitable.
Why does my cat sleep on my clothes?
Clothes can be soft and warm, and worn clothing may carry your familiar scent. Some cats prefer dirty laundry for that smell; others choose clean laundry because it has just been warmed and feels safe. Individual preference matters more than whether the clothes are clean or dirty.
Why does my cat sleep on me?
Your body provides warmth, contact and a familiar scent. A cat can enjoy sleeping on you and still use a separate bed, box or blanket at other times.

How can I get my cat to use a new bed?
Place it in a quiet, safe location that matches the cat’s preferred height and cover. Add a used blanket, toy or washable fleece carrying the cat’s familiar scent, leave the bed available without pressure, and offer other options as well.
Should I buy a covered or elevated bed?
Choose according to observed behavior. Covered spaces suit cats seeking enclosure and privacy; elevated options suit cats that regularly rest above floor level. An open, floor-level bed may be better for a cat that sprawls, watches the room or has difficulty stepping over high sides.
How many hours should a cat sleep?
Cats Protection gives domestic cats an approximate range of 12 to 18 hours per day, with a separate 2016 article describing an average of about 16 hours. The number of hours does not tell you whether clothes or a bed is preferred.

The practical verdict
Your cat may prefer your clothes today because they are soft, warm and familiar, then choose a bed, box or sunny patch tomorrow. No controlled comparison establishes that cats generally prefer laundry over beds or beds over laundry. Make the alternative comfortable, quiet, safe and appropriately covered or elevated; add familiar scent; provide more than one option; and watch the individual cat’s repeated choices. If sleeping habits change sharply alongside other signs of illness, involve a veterinarian.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why does my cat ignore an expensive cat bed?
Cats rotate sleeping places and may find another location warmer, quieter, more familiar or better positioned. Ignoring one bed does not mean every bed is unsuitable.
Why does my cat sleep on my clothes?
Clothes can provide softness, warmth and a familiar owner scent. Some cats prefer worn laundry; others prefer clean, freshly warmed laundry.
How do I encourage use of a new bed?
Place it in a quiet spot matching your cat’s preferred height and cover, add a used blanket or toy for familiar scent, and offer other resting options without forcing use.
When is a sleeping change a veterinary concern?
A sudden or persistent change is more concerning when paired with reduced appetite, hiding, lethargy, difficulty moving or breathing changes. Open-mouth or difficult breathing is urgent.
The Bottom Line
Let your cat’s repeated choices guide you. Clothes may win for softness, warmth and familiar scent, while a bed can succeed when its shape, position, privacy and elevation fit the individual cat. Offer several safe, washable options and seek veterinary advice for significant changes accompanied by other symptoms.
