There is no one best cat brush for every coat or cat. A short-haired cat may prefer a soft brush, while a long-haired cat may need a comb; some cats tolerate a grooming mitt better than either. The eight products below are picks from Catster’s UK comparison, updated 15 September 2026—not products independently tested by Animalso. Choose by coat, grooming task and your cat’s comfort, rather than by a ranking alone.
How to choose a cat brush
Start with the job you need the tool to do. Routine grooming, lifting loose hair, working through an undercoat and dealing with a small knot are different tasks, and a brush suited to one may not be suited to another.

- Match the tool to the coat: Cats Protection notes that a long-haired cat may do well with a comb, while a short-haired cat may prefer a soft brush. A mitt can suit a cat that dislikes conventional brushes. Cats Protection’s grooming guidance covers these options.
- Separate routine grooming from mat removal: A general-purpose brush is not necessarily suitable for heavy tangles. For long coats, the RSPCA recommends a wide-toothed metal comb and says a specialised dematting comb is safer than scissors for mats.
- Consider your cat’s tolerance: Pin brushes and combs may be useful for some coats but uncomfortable if used forcefully. A soft brush or mitt may be easier to introduce to a sensitive cat.
- Check handling and cleaning: Pick a tool you can control gently and clean between sessions. For any product, check the current UK listing for the precise size or coat-length variant before buying.
Cats Protection gives weekly brushing for short-haired cats and daily brushing for long-haired cats as general examples; the RSPCA similarly advises that many long-haired cats need daily grooming and short-haired cats should still be groomed at least weekly. These are broad guidelines, not a fixed schedule for every cat. Coat condition, outdoor activity and the individual cat matter.

Which type of cat brush suits your cat?
For a short-haired cat
Try a soft brush or, if your cat prefers being stroked, a grooming mitt. Cats Protection gives weekly brushing as a general example for short-haired cats. Catster’s soft silicone Celemoon brush is described as a routine-grooming option, while its glove set is aimed at cats that resist brushes. Neither is presented as a solution for difficult mats.
For a long-haired cat
A wide-toothed metal comb is a useful starting point for separating and checking long hair. The RSPCA recommends combing in the natural direction of the coat and gently teasing knots rather than pulling. Catster’s MalsiPree pick is specifically described for long, thick coats; its slicker and dematting-comb picks address different grooming tasks. A tool label alone does not make a painful knot safe to remove at home.

For a double coat or loose undercoat
Catster positions its FURminator pick for double-layer coats and its MalsiPree brush for long, thick coats. These are product descriptions from Catster, not a guarantee that either tool suits every cat with an undercoat. Select the right variant and stop if grooming causes discomfort.
For a cat that dislikes brushing
A grooming mitt may feel more like ordinary stroking than a brush. Cats Protection notes that some cats prefer this approach. Introduce any tool gradually, with little restraint; if your cat has had a bad grooming experience, Cats Protection says a qualified behaviourist may help.

How to groom safely
- Choose a calm moment and start briefly. The RSPCA recommends short, regular sessions. Let your cat see and smell the tool, and introduce grooming a little at a time rather than forcing a long session.
- Use a light touch. For long hair, follow the direction of growth with a wide-toothed metal comb. The RSPCA identifies the chest, abdomen, area behind the ears, backs of the legs and armpits as common places for tangles.
- Watch your cat’s signals. The RSPCA says to stop if your cat twitches, swishes its tail, growls or hisses. Praise and treats can help make brief sessions more positive, but do not continue through signs of distress.
- Do not cut mats out with scissors. The RSPCA warns that scissors can cut the skin and recommends a specialised dematting comb instead. If a mat is tight, extensive or difficult to work through gently, ask a groomer or vet for help.
- Seek veterinary advice about skin or coat changes. Contact a vet about sores, wounds or a changed coat. Cats Protection also recommends investigation when excessive grooming causes hair loss or sores.
