Plan for two things before adopting from a cat café: the café’s own approval rules and the costs that begin after the adoption fee. Policies differ by organization. One café may require an in-person meeting and take 7–10 days to approve an application; another may process most applications during the visit. Fees, veterinary inclusions, pickup timing and starter supplies also vary.
Before you apply, confirm eligibility, meet the cat, review its medical and behavior history, ask for records, and find out what food it eats. Have a secure carrier and a quiet room ready at home. Budget separately for supplies, food, litter, routine veterinary care, local licensing where required, and an emergency reserve.

1. Check the café’s rules before you visit
There is no universal cat-café adoption process. Read the organization’s adoption page and contact staff if any requirement is unclear. Confirm these points before making a reservation or submitting an application:

- Whether meeting a specific cat is required before applying.
- Minimum age, identification, housing, landlord and household requirements.
- Whether every adult who makes decisions about the cat should participate.
- Application fees, deposits, holds and refund terms.
- References, interviews or follow-up checks.
- Typical decision time and the earliest pickup date after approval.
- What the adoption agreement, return policy and post-adoption support cover.
Requirements can be organization-specific. Denver Cat Rescue says applicants must be over 21 and that it cannot accept applications from people in student housing or dorms. Those are Denver Cat Rescue rules, not general cat-adoption laws. Ask your café about lease restrictions, permission from a landlord and whether other pets must be introduced during the process.

2. Understand the likely adoption sequence
Use this as a planning framework, not a promise that every café follows the same order.
- Arrange a visit. Find out whether walk-ins are accepted, whether reservations are needed and how long a meeting lasts.
- Meet the cat. Observe the cat’s behavior in the café and ask staff how it behaves in a home, around children, with other animals and when handled.
- Submit the application. Complete the café’s form only after confirming that the cat is a realistic match and that you meet its eligibility rules.
- Complete screening. Be ready for references, a housing check, an interview or follow-up questions.
- Review the agreement. Check the fee, included veterinary care, return procedure, support contacts and any restrictions before signing.
- Prepare for approval and pickup. Ask for the exact handover date, required payment method and documents to bring.
The timing can be very different. Denver Cat Rescue says an applicant should meet the cat and submit an application during or after that meeting; an online application without an in-person meeting is not an adoption hold. It says approved applicants can expect to take a cat home 7–10 days after applying. Hawaii Cat Cafe says potential adopters need to meet cats before applying and that most applications can be processed during a visit. Confirm the current procedure directly because schedules and availability can change.
3. Ask for the cat’s records and history
A friendly café interaction is only one part of matching. Ask staff to explain what is known and what remains uncertain.

Medical questions
- Which vaccinations were given, and on what dates?
- Has the cat been spayed or neutered?
- Were FIV and FeLV tests performed, and what were the results?
- Were parasite treatments completed? If so, which treatment and when is the next dose due?
- Is the cat microchipped, and how will ownership and your contact details be registered?
- Are there diagnoses, medications, dental concerns, allergies or follow-up appointments?
- Which veterinary services are included in the adoption fee and which are your responsibility?
Behavior and daily-care questions
- How does the cat use the litter box, and what litter type does it prefer?
- What food, feeding schedule and portion size does it currently have?
- Does it scratch furniture, vocalize at night, hide or show separation distress?
- How does it respond to children, visitors, dogs and other cats?
- What handling does it tolerate, including nail trims, brushing and being placed in a carrier?
- What changes or triggers have staff observed since the cat arrived?
Request copies of the medical records and written adoption paperwork. Petfinder’s cat adoption checklist recommends checking the cat’s current food; keeping that food initially can make the transition easier. Do not assume a café’s description replaces a veterinary examination after adoption.
4. Compare fees and what they include
Published prices are examples from individual organizations, not a national fee schedule. The following page prices were checked on October 13, 2026; the pages did not state publication years.
| Organization | Published fee or donation | Age or condition | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|---|
| Denver Cat Rescue | $150 | Cats over 1 year | Organization-published price; confirm current amount. |
| Denver Cat Rescue | $175 | Cats 7–11 months | Organization-published price; confirm current amount. |
| Denver Cat Rescue | $200 | Cats 6 months and younger | Organization-published price; confirm current amount. |
| Hawaii Cat Cafe | $150 | Cats 6 months and younger | Organization-published price; confirm current amount and inclusions. |
| Hawaii Cat Cafe | $125 | Cats 7 months to 1 year | Organization-published price; confirm current amount and inclusions. |
| Hawaii Cat Cafe | $100 | Cats 2 years and older | Organization-published price; confirm current amount and inclusions. |
| Cat Cafe Maui | Donation-only adoption | Not stated | The café says donations go to Maui Humane Society; no fixed amount is stated. |
Ask for an itemized explanation before paying. Denver Cat Rescue reports that its adoption care includes vaccination, spay or neuter, FIV-FeLV testing and microchipping. Hawaii Cat Cafe publishes its own fee schedule and stated care package; verify exactly which procedures are complete for the individual cat and which, if any, remain due. A fee can be lower or higher because of age, medical status, local operating costs or a donation model, not because one cat is intrinsically more valuable.

5. Supplies to have ready
Bring-home essentials
- Secure carrier: Choose one large enough for the cat to stand, turn and lie down without escaping. Ask whether the café supplies one. Petfinder lists a carrier among recommended supplies, and MEOW Cat Rescue lists a carrier as an adoption extra.
- Current food: Buy the same food the cat already eats for the first several days, or obtain a small amount from the café. Change diets gradually unless a veterinarian directs otherwise.
- Food and water bowls: Use stable, easy-to-clean bowls and provide fresh water.
- Litter setup: Have a litter box, the cat’s familiar litter if possible, a scoop and a mat ready before pickup.
- Identification: Ask about microchip registration and keep your phone number and address current. A collar and identification tag can provide an additional way to reach you when appropriate.
- Grooming tools: Select a brush, comb or nail clippers suited to the cat’s coat and handling tolerance.
Useful but optional items
- A quiet bed or covered resting place.
- A scratching post or pad.
- Age-appropriate toys, including interactive toys for supervised play.
- A spare collar, replacement litter scoop or additional grooming supplies.
MEOW Cat Rescue gives one concrete example of add-on pricing: a $10 cardboard carrier and a $65 starter kit containing a litter box, clumping clay litter, scoop, bowls, toys, scratcher, nap pad and nail clippers. Those are that rescue’s listed extras, not general market prices or required equipment.

6. Set up a low-stress first room
Prepare one quiet room before the cat arrives rather than giving a nervous cat unrestricted access to the entire home. Place the litter box away from food and water, add a hiding place, and remove hazards such as toxic plants, unsecured windows, exposed cords and small objects that could be swallowed. Keep doors and windows closed while the cat adjusts.
On arrival, take the carrier into that room, close the door and open the carrier. Let the cat leave at its own pace. Do not pull it out, introduce it to visitors immediately or force handling. Keep the first routine predictable, monitor eating, drinking, urination and stool, and contact the rescue or a veterinarian if the cat appears ill or stops eating.

7. Budget beyond the adoption fee
Build a local budget in separate lines. The available sources do not establish a comparable national monthly or first-year total, so a single “average cost” would be misleading.
| Budget line | When it occurs | What to confirm |
|---|---|---|
| Adoption fee or donation | At approval or pickup | Amount, payment method, refund terms and any deposit or hold. |
| Initial supplies | Before pickup | Carrier, food, bowls, litter box, litter, scoop, identification and grooming items. |
| Routine veterinary care | After adoption and periodically | Which examinations, vaccines, tests, parasite treatments and procedures are already complete. |
| Food and litter | Ongoing | Current diet, feeding amount, litter type and household consumption. |
| Licensing | Where local rules require it | City or county registration deadlines, fees and renewal schedule. |
| Unexpected illness or injury | Unscheduled | Emergency savings, insurance options or an approved payment plan. |
Petfinder identifies food, routine veterinary care, licensing where required, litter and a box, identification, grooming and unexpected veterinary care among adoption-related needs. PALNV explains that adoption fees alone do not cover all basic veterinary costs, food, litter and supplies during a cat’s stay. Treat the fee as one line in the budget, not as a forecast of total ownership cost.

| Comparison area | Questions to record |
|---|---|
| Eligibility | Age, housing, landlord permission, household participation and required references. |
| Process and timing | Meeting requirement, application steps, decision time, hold policy and pickup date. |
| Financial terms | Fee or donation, deposits, payment deadline and return-related costs. |
| Medical package | Vaccines, spay/neuter, tests, parasite care, microchip and follow-up obligations. |
| Cat-specific fit | Health, temperament, activity level, litter habits and compatibility with your home. |
| Support | Records, transition advice, veterinary contacts, post-adoption help and return policy. |
| Supplies | Carrier, food, litter, starter kit or other items supplied at pickup. |
Record the staff member’s name and the date of each answer. Policies can change, and written confirmation prevents a verbal assumption about a vaccine, microchip or included carrier from becoming an unexpected bill.
9. Pickup-day checklist
- Bring your identification, payment and any signed approval documents.
- Bring a properly secured carrier; never transport the cat loose in a vehicle.
- Collect the adoption agreement, medical records, vaccination dates, test results and microchip information.
- Confirm the next due date for vaccines, parasite treatment or a veterinary examination.
- Take home enough of the current food and litter to avoid an abrupt change.
- Ask for an emergency contact and the procedure if the adoption does not work out.
- Drive directly home, keep the carrier level and avoid opening it outside a closed room.
10. Common mistakes and how to avoid them
Assuming every café has the same rules
Fix: read the specific café’s eligibility, timing and hold policy. Denver Cat Rescue and Hawaii Cat Cafe demonstrate how different the sequence can be.
Choosing on fee alone
Fix: compare the included medical work, records, follow-up obligations and the cat’s needs. A lower fee may come with fewer stated inclusions or a donation structure that requires separate planning.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Changing food and litter immediately
Fix: start with the cat’s familiar products and transition gradually. Ask staff for the exact brand or type before pickup.
Leaving supplies until adoption day
Fix: assemble the carrier, room, litter box, food and water before approval so the first hours are calm and secure.
Failing to plan for medical surprises
Fix: reserve money for an examination and unexpected illness or injury even when the café reports completed care. Keep all records so your veterinarian can avoid unnecessary repetition.
