Cat Cafes Around the World: Which Ones Help Cats in Need?

Some cat cafes help cats find homes by partnering with shelters and making adoptable cats available to visitors. Others keep permanent resident cats, or support rescue financially without offering adoptions. A cafe’s rescue connection is worth checking, but it does not by itself show how well the cats are cared for or how many are rehomed.

How cat cafes help—and why their models differ

An adoption-focused cafe gives visitors a chance to meet cats who may be available for adoption, often in partnership with a shelter or rescue organization. Other cafes keep resident cats who are not available for adoption. Some may support rescue in other ways, such as donating proceeds.

CatCafes.org notes that cafe models vary with local laws, health regulations, and culture. It generally attributes the first cat cafe to Cat Flower Garden in Taipei, Taiwan, which opened in 1998; that origin is commonly attributed rather than an uncontested fact. CatCafes.org

What the worldwide directory figures show

Cat Cafe Map’s 2026 directory estimates report at least 683 open cafes offering cats for adoption—59% of the directory’s reported total—and 342 open cafes in the United States, or 29% of its reported world total. Its current directory page also says 558 cafes partner with rescues. These are publisher-reported directory figures, not an independently verified global census; they do not count cats adopted or establish rescue outcomes. Cat Cafe Map

The figures indicate that adoption and rescue partnerships are present in the directory, not that every listed cafe operates the same way. A directory listing can help locate a cafe, but it does not certify its welfare practices.

What a rescue connection does—and does not—tell you

A named shelter or rescue partner helps clarify where adoptable cats come from and who may handle adoption applications. It does not, on its own, establish that cats have adequate rest, appropriate veterinary care, or a comfortable way to avoid visitors. PETA describes both adoption cafes working with shelters and cafes with permanent resident cats, and recommends that cats come from reputable shelters or rescue organizations. PETA’s overview of cat cafes

Singapore SPCA advises visitors to favor cafes that prioritize animal health, encourage adoption rather than buying, and may conduct rescue work. It has also described investigations concerning pet-cafe concerns, underscoring why the operator’s practices matter alongside its stated mission. Singapore SPCA

Guidance from the Association of Dogs and Cats Homes (ADCH) notes that some cafes facilitate adoption and recommends slow, gradual, structured introductions for cats. It also cautions that cafe rules vary, are voluntary, and depend on the cafe’s ability to enforce them. ADCH

How to assess a cat cafe before visiting

Ask the cafe directly about its cats and practices. These questions help distinguish an adoption venue from a resident-cat cafe and give you a clearer picture of the cats’ experience:

  • Who supplies or supports the cats? Ask for the name of the shelter or rescue partner, if there is one, and whether it is responsible for adoption applications.
  • Are any cats adoptable? Find out whether the cats you meet are available for adoption, permanent residents, or a mix—and what the adoption process involves.
  • Can cats choose to be alone? Look for places where cats can retreat from visitors and are not forced to interact.
  • How does the cafe address health and behavior? Look for clear attention to veterinary care, rest, gradual introductions, and rules for visitor interaction.
  • Are donations specific and transparent? If the cafe supports rescue financially, check whether it names the recipient and explains what contribution it makes.

No single international standard in the cited guidance lets visitors rank cafes consistently on welfare or adoption outcomes. Local rules, partnerships, and operating policies also vary and can change, so confirm current details with the cafe or relevant local authority.

A cafe can support rescue without being an adoption center

Cat Cafe UK says it is not a rescue center and that its resident cats are not available for adoption. The operator says it donates 50% of merchandise profits to local cat rescues. That is a different form of support from hosting adoptable cats; check the operator’s current statement and donation details directly. Cat Cafe UK

For a contrasting perspective on adoption-focused work, Cat Town co-founder Adam Myatt described the cafe model as “fun schtick on top of a serious rescue operation,” according to Time. The quote illustrates one organization’s approach, not a measure of the results or practices of cat cafes generally. Time

What is established about their impact

Some cafes do partner with rescues and make cats available for adoption, and visitors can meet adoptable cats in a setting outside a shelter. The available global figures do not provide comparable, independently verified adoption totals or welfare outcomes across cafes. It is therefore not possible to conclude from directory counts or individual examples how many cats cat cafes worldwide have rehomed, or to rank cafes on a common international measure.
