What cat dandruff looks like
Dandruff is a description of flakes or scales on a cat’s skin or coat. Veterinary guidance describes feline seborrhea as dry, oily, or a mixture of both. Scaling may be most noticeable along the back or left behind where a cat rests. Redness, crusts, greasy or waxy buildup, and an unpleasant odor can occur too. Why a cat may have dandruff
Flaking can develop when the skin produces or sheds scales abnormally, but it may also be a sign of another problem. Grooming difficulties

Parasites, allergies, and infection
Fleas, ticks, and mites can cause skin irritation and scaling. Mite infestations may also involve itching, crusts, or hair loss; in longer-standing cases, scaling or oily dandruff can be among the signs. Allergies and bacterial or yeast infections are other possibilities. Because these problems can look alike, flakes alone are not enough to identify which one is present. Diet, environment, and internal illness
Dietary abnormalities, including low omega-3 levels, and environmental changes are among the potential contributors to scaling. Hormonal imbalance, especially hyperthyroidism, and other internal disorders can also affect the skin. When to contact a veterinarian
Arrange veterinary advice if the flakes persist, worsen, or appear with signs of discomfort or skin disease. In particular, contact your veterinarian about:
- Itching, redness, or visible inflammation
- Crusts, wounds, greasy buildup, or an unusual odor
- Hair loss or a change in grooming
- Scaling that continues despite routine coat care
These signs can accompany parasites, infection, allergies, or another underlying disorder. What to tell the veterinarian
Before the appointment, note when the flakes began and where they appear. Describe whether the skin seems dry or greasy and whether your cat has itching, redness, crusts, odor, hair loss, or changes in grooming. Mention new foods or medications, parasite prevention, other signs of illness, and changes at home. These details help guide an examination; they are not a substitute for diagnosis.
How a veterinarian diagnoses the cause
The veterinarian will consider your cat’s history and examine the skin and coat. Depending on the findings, possible tests include skin cytology, skin scrapings, hair plucking, culture, bloodwork, or hormone testing. How cat dandruff is treated
Treatment follows the diagnosis. A veterinarian may recommend parasite control, treatment for a confirmed bacterial or yeast infection, a dietary change, care for an underlying illness, or a topical product. Omega-3 supplements may be appropriate in selected cases, but they are not a universal remedy. Do not assume human dandruff shampoo is safe or suitable
There is no universal shampoo cure for feline dandruff. Ask your veterinarian before using a medicated shampoo, ointment, gel, spray, or supplement; topical products may be licked off, and local treatments should be used sparingly.
