If you suspect your cat has been exposed to an insecticide, call your veterinarian or an emergency veterinary clinic immediately. Do not wait for symptoms to appear—especially if your cat is trembling, having a seizure, struggling to breathe, or behaving abnormally. Keep the product packaging nearby so the veterinary team can identify the active ingredient.
What insecticide poisoning can look like
Signs vary with the chemical, dose, route of exposure, and product formulation. Some cats develop symptoms within hours; certain organophosphate exposures can have a delayed onset of more than two days. A symptom pattern can help a veterinarian assess the exposure, but it cannot identify the product or establish a diagnosis by itself.

Pyrethrin and pyrethroid exposure
These insecticides are found in some flea products and household or yard products. Cats may be exposed if a dog flea product is mistakenly applied to them, if they touch a recently treated dog, or through contact with a treated area. Possible signs include drooling, agitation or restlessness, vomiting, hiding, poor coordination, twitching or tremors, seizures, breathing difficulty, and unusually low or high body temperature.

Organophosphate and carbamate exposure
These insecticides can cause a cluster of signs associated with excess cholinergic activity. Possible signs include drooling, small pupils, urination, diarrhea, vomiting, breathing difficulty, muscle twitching or weakness, poor coordination, and seizures. Onset is often within minutes to hours, but some organophosphate poisonings can take more than two days to become apparent.

What to tell the veterinary team
When you call, give a concise account of what happened and what you have observed. If you can do so without delaying the call or handling a dangerous product, keep its package or label. Share:
- The product name and active ingredient, if available.
- How much exposure may have occurred, and when.
- Whether exposure was by ingestion, skin contact, or another route.
- What signs you have noticed and when each began.
- Your cat’s age, weight, medications, and relevant health conditions.
- Any recent pesticide applications in the home, yard, or on other animals.
How veterinarians diagnose insecticide poisoning
Diagnosis begins with the exposure history and the cat’s clinical signs. The veterinary team may also examine the product label and consider other diagnostic tests based on the suspected chemical and the cat’s condition.

Tests for suspected organophosphate or carbamate poisoning
A veterinarian may measure blood cholinesterase activity when organophosphate or carbamate poisoning is suspected. Residue analysis may also be considered. These tests have limitations: cholinesterase results may not match the severity of illness, and some chemical residues may not persist for long.

Treatment depends on the specific product, route and extent of exposure, and the cat’s signs. Veterinary care may involve decontamination, monitoring, and treatment for complications. For pyrethrin or pyrethroid poisoning, there is no specific antidote; care may include temperature monitoring, seizure control, and other supportive treatment. For organophosphate poisoning, a veterinarian may use atropine and pralidoxime, with decontamination or respiratory support as needed.

- COMPLETE KIT, MAKES 32 OZ: Includes one 16 oz refillable spray bottle and two 3.7 oz concentrate bottles — just add water to make 32 oz of plant-powered flea and tick spray for dogs and home. Refill instead of rebuying, so a little goes a long way.
Do not try to induce vomiting
Do not make your cat vomit or give a home antidote unless a veterinarian specifically instructs you to do so. Veterinary toxicology guidance says inducing vomiting is not usually recommended after pyrethrin or pyrethroid ingestion, and emesis can be unsafe in some poisoning situations.
If the product is on your cat’s coat
Call a veterinarian for immediate instructions. Prevent your cat from grooming or contacting another animal only if you can do so safely and without delaying urgent care. Gentle washing with detergent and cool water is described as a decontamination approach, but bathing should not delay veterinary attention; VCA guidance places bathing after the cat is stable and under veterinary care.

Recovery and prevention
What affects the outlook
With pyrethrin or pyrethroid poisoning, prompt veterinary treatment is associated with a usually good prognosis. Uncontrolled neurologic signs, clotting problems, or kidney failure are associated with a poorer prognosis. This outlook should not be assumed for poisoning from other insecticide classes; the likely course depends on the chemical and the cat’s condition.
