Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteIf your cat avoids the litter box, check the setup—but do not assume the cause is behavioral. Health problems, stress, and box or litter preferences can all play a part. These eight common mistakes are practical places to start, while sudden changes or straining call for veterinary attention.
1. Providing too few boxes—or keeping them together
A common professional rule of thumb is one box per cat plus one extra. In a home with established social groups, the AAHA/AAFP guideline also describes one box per group plus one. These are starting points, not rigid rules that fit every household.

Place boxes in separate, accessible locations rather than clustering them: several boxes side by side may function more like one location from the cat’s perspective. Consider whether each cat can reach a box without having to pass another cat or enter a space where it feels trapped.
2. Choosing a box that is too small or difficult to enter
The AAHA/AAFP guideline recommends a box at least 1.5 times the cat’s length, measured from nose to the tip of the tail. It notes that many manufactured boxes are too small; a suitably sized storage container may provide more room.

Check the usable interior space, not just the product’s outside dimensions. Your cat should be able to turn around and settle without being cramped. Kittens, older cats, or cats with mobility difficulties may need a lower entry. Choose dimensions and entry height for the individual cat.
3. Using disliked litter or changing it abruptly
Cornell notes that many cats prefer unscented litter, but cats do not all share the same preferences. Texture and other features may matter to an individual cat, so a type that works for one cat is not guaranteed to suit another.

If you need to change litter, make the transition gradually rather than replacing the old litter all at once. If you are unsure what your cat accepts, offering separate boxes with different litter choices can help you observe its preference. A litter change is not a substitute for checking a medical problem.
4. Letting waste build up or using strong cleaning products
Scoop waste daily and clean the box regularly. The AAHA/AAFP guidance recommends hot water and advises against soap or strong chemicals, which may leave smells cats find unpleasant. Cornell also recommends replacing old boxes that are cracked or retain odors.

5. Putting the box somewhere noisy, inconvenient, or isolated
Choose a quiet, private place that remains easy for your cat to reach. Keep the box separate from food and water, and make sure access is available throughout the day. A location that is out of the way for people may also be hard for the cat to reach or feel too isolated.
If your cat has difficulty with stairs, put a box on the same level where it spends time. In a multi-box home, distribute boxes across accessible locations rather than expecting the cat to travel to one preferred corner.

6. Assuming covered or automatic boxes suit every cat
Some cats may use a covered box, while others may avoid one. Cornell notes that a cover can hold odors in and suggests trying an uncovered box if a cat avoids the covered one; the professional guidance recognizes that cover preference varies. If you are troubleshooting, offer a different design and observe which one your cat uses.
An automatic or self-cleaning box is not necessary for every cat. Whichever design you choose, make sure it gives your cat adequate room, is accessible, and can be kept clean.

7. Punishing accidents or forcing the cat into the box
Do not scold your cat for toileting outside the box or place it in the box as punishment. The AAHA/AAFP guideline states: “Cats should never be reprimanded for toileting in undesired locations and should never be taken to a litter box punitively.”
Instead, look calmly at the cat’s health, box size and entry, cleanliness, litter, location, and household conditions. Punishment does not identify what is making the box difficult or unpleasant to use.
8. Treating new avoidance as “just behavior”
Medical conditions can interfere with normal urination or defecation. Cornell advises veterinary evaluation for persistent litter-box problems, and a sudden change also deserves prompt attention rather than an assumption that the cat is acting out.

Straining can signal a life-threatening emergency, particularly in male cats, according to the Merck Veterinary Manual. Do not wait to see whether changing the litter or box resolves straining.
What to check when your cat stops using the box
- First: Notice whether the change is sudden and whether your cat is straining; seek veterinary guidance promptly for straining.
- Then: Check box access, size, entry height, location, cleanliness, litter, and whether another cat may be blocking access.
- Make adjustments thoughtfully: Change one setup feature at a time where practical, and observe your cat’s response. For litter changes, transition gradually.
