The right fit depends on the care you can reliably provide, your home and budget, household health and travel plans, and the individual animal. Work through these five checks before you commit, then ask a reputable rescue or rehoming organization to help you find a suitable match.
1. Compare daily routines and attention needs
Start with an honest look at the time and energy your household can sustain every day—not just during an unusually free week. Dogs need daily feeding, grooming, exercise, play, and care for elimination. Their needs vary by individual and type of dog, but regular outdoor access is part of planning for a dog.

Cats also need consistent care: feeding, suitable housing, interaction, mental stimulation, and preventive veterinary care. A cat may fit a different routine from a dog, but “independent” does not mean maintenance-free. Consider how long people are away, who will be responsible for care, and whether everyone can keep up the routine over time.
Both choices involve a long-term welfare commitment. The American Veterinary Medical Association puts it plainly: “When you acquire a pet you accept responsibility for the health and welfare of another living thing.” AVMA guidance on selecting a pet dog explains the importance of considering your ability to provide care.

2. Check your home, access, and household agreement
Before meeting animals, confirm that your household and housing can accommodate the pet. Review your lease, building rules, local restrictions, and any shared household decisions. Think through safe areas and suitable space for either animal. For a dog, also consider how you will provide outdoor access for elimination and exercise.
These constraints are specific to your location and home; a general cat-versus-dog comparison cannot establish what your lease or local rules allow. Resolve those questions before you adopt or buy rather than relying on assumptions.

3. Make a realistic care budget
Plan for routine expenses as well as the possibility of illness or injury. Include food and routine veterinary care, and consider how you would handle emergency costs. A shelter recommends considering savings for unforeseen care and/or pet health insurance.

4. Account for allergies, travel, and shared responsibilities
Ask everyone in the household about possible allergies before committing. Allergy responses vary among people and animals; neither a particular species nor a breed guarantees a safe match for someone with allergies. If there is uncertainty, seek appropriate medical advice and consider the specific animal rather than assuming a label predicts the outcome. Next, make a plan for trips and other absences. Decide who will handle feeding, cleaning, training, exercise, and enrichment, including when the usual caregiver is unavailable. A choice that works only if one person is always home or available may not be workable for the household.

5. Match with the individual animal and choose a responsible source
Species is only one part of compatibility. Consider the animal’s temperament, health, behavior, and life stage. Puppies and kittens can require additional supervision and socialization; for some households, an adult animal may be a better fit. Meet the animal where possible and ask about its health, behavior, and records.
A reputable rescue or rehoming organization can assess whether a household is ready and help match it with an animal. A good organization should check suitability, help select an appropriate pet, and offer care advice and support. In the UK, government guidance advises buyers to avoid unknown sources, consider reputable rescue, view the animal and documentation, and speak with a vet if concerned. It also says a good rehoming organization will use an adoption contract in most cases. These recommendations are UK-specific; follow local rules and animal-welfare guidance elsewhere.
