If your cat is panting and drooling right now, check how they are breathing. Open-mouth breathing with visible effort, collapse, marked weakness, unusual gum color, heat exposure, or possible poisoning calls for immediate veterinary help. Move the cat somewhere cooler and quiet if overheating may be involved, and contact an emergency veterinarian. Panting and drooling can have several causes; appearance alone cannot identify the cause safely.

When panting and drooling are an emergency

Cats do not typically pant like dogs. Panting can happen briefly after intense exertion or stress, but it can also signal overheating, pain, or heart or respiratory disease. Drooling that starts suddenly, continues, or increases can accompany mouth pain, nausea, poisoning, or heatstroke.

  • Open-mouth breathing with visible difficulty, rapid or labored breathing, or other signs of respiratory distress.
  • Collapse, severe weakness, or gums that look unusually pale, blue, gray, or otherwise abnormal.
  • Gagging or coughing alongside panting or breathing difficulty.
  • Recent heat exposure or any reason to suspect poisoning.
  • Sudden or continuous drooling with distress or other concerning symptoms.

VCA Animal Hospitals advises immediate veterinary care for difficulty breathing, especially open-mouth breathing or panting. Do not wait for symptoms to pass or for an online diagnosis.

What to do while arranging veterinary care

  1. Call an emergency veterinarian. Describe the panting, drooling, breathing effort, other symptoms, and any possible heat or toxin exposure.
  2. If heat may be involved, move your cat out of it. Take them to a cooler area, keep them quiet, and minimize handling and movement while you contact veterinary care.
  3. Do not force food or water or give human medication. VCA cautions against forcing food or drink and advises using human medication only if a veterinarian directs you to do so.
  4. If poisoning is possible, contact a veterinarian or an appropriate local animal poison service. If you can do so without delaying departure, bring a sample of the suspected substance and its container.
  5. Transport your cat securely. Use a cat carrier if one is immediately available, but do not delay emergency care to find one.

Possible reasons a cat pants and drools

These signs overlap across different conditions, so the possibilities below are reasons to seek veterinary assessment—not diagnoses you can make at home.

Overheating or heatstroke

Heat, humidity, and poor ventilation can contribute to heatstroke. Affected pets may pant rapidly and drool excessively. Virginia Tech Veterinary Teaching Hospital describes heatstroke as a medical emergency and says it occurs when a pet’s temperature rises above 105.8°F. That is the institution’s stated threshold, not a home test or a temperature to wait for before seeking care.

Stress or exertion

Intense play, a stressful car ride, or a veterinary visit may trigger a short episode of panting. A plausible trigger does not rule out illness. If panting does not settle promptly with rest, returns, begins without an obvious trigger, or happens alongside other symptoms, contact a veterinarian.

Respiratory or heart disease

Feline asthma and pneumonia are among the respiratory conditions that may be associated with panting. Heart disease can also cause breathing signs if fluid affects the lungs. Owners cannot distinguish these causes from panting alone; breathing difficulty needs urgent veterinary care.

Pain or other illness

Severe pain can cause panting, and anemia is another possible cause. These conditions require veterinary examination rather than home diagnosis.

Mouth pain, dental disease, nausea, or poisoning

Sudden or increased drooling may be associated with dental disease, mouth pain, nausea, or toxin exposure. Drooling by itself does not reveal which cause is responsible. PDSA advises contacting a veterinarian about increased drooling, and immediate contact for sudden or continuous drooling, distress, other concerning signs, possible poisoning, or possible heatstroke.

When to contact your regular veterinarian

Even if an episode followed play or a stressful event and then stopped, contact your veterinarian if panting persists, recurs, happens at rest, or has no clear trigger. Arrange an assessment for repeated or unexplained drooling as well. A brief apparent recovery does not establish that the underlying cause is harmless.

Reducing preventable risks

Lower heat exposure

  • Provide shade, access to water, and ventilation.
  • Never leave your cat in a hot car.
  • If your cat pants or drools after heat exposure, move them to a cooler place and contact veterinary care rather than waiting to see whether the signs pass.

Prevent access to toxins

Keep plants, chemicals, medicines, and other potential toxins out of your cat’s reach. If exposure may have occurred, seek veterinary or poison-control advice promptly rather than waiting for symptoms.

Do not treat an unexplained episode with products

Heat precautions and toxin prevention cannot prevent every medical cause of panting or drooling. No cooling, dental, or supplement product can establish or treat an undiagnosed cause; recurring or unexplained signs need veterinary assessment.
