Start with the categories below, then check current listings for size, stability, replacement surfaces, and price.
What kind of cat scratcher should you get?
Scratching is normal feline behavior. It can serve several purposes, so the practical aim is to offer an acceptable surface and guide your cat toward it—not to expect scratching to stop. Cornell’s Feline Behavior Problems: Destructive Behavior explains that matching a cat’s preferred scratching orientation and substrate is important when choosing a scratcher.

Use your cat’s existing habits as the starting point. A cat that reaches up to scratch a sofa arm may prefer a vertical post; one that rakes a rug may prefer a flat or angled surface. Texture is individual, too: sisal, rough fabric, wood, and corrugated cardboard are all options supported in feline-care guidance, but none is established as best for every cat.

Which scratcher formats fit different habits?
| Format | Consider it when | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Horizontal corrugated cardboard pad | Your cat scratches rugs or uses a low, forward-reaching motion. | Whether the pad stays in place and offers enough usable surface. Cornell notes that even a flattened cardboard box may serve as a scratch surface. |
| Tall, stable sisal post | Your cat scratches upright furniture or stretches against a vertical surface. | That the post resists wobbling and is tall enough for your cat to stretch fully. A generic “large” label does not establish either point. |
| Multi-orientation scratcher | Your cat’s preferred direction is unclear, or you want to offer horizontal and vertical surfaces in one format. | That each surface is accessible and stable. Offering multiple directions may help you observe a preference, but it does not guarantee acceptance. |
| Angled or wall-mounted scratcher | Your cat scratches at a slant or uses a particular upright area. | Mounting security, usable surface area, and whether the angle matches your cat’s behavior. Current comparative performance for these formats is not established in the sources cited here. |
| Combined climbing and scratching form | Your cat already uses elevated or climbing furniture and may use an integrated surface. | Stability, access, and the scratch surface’s orientation. No product-specific ranking or comparative performance is established here. |
These are useful categories, not ranked product recommendations. PetMD’s What’s Your Cat’s Scratching Style? discusses horizontal and multi-orientation forms, while Seattle Humane’s Why Do Cats Scratch? describes cardboard among commonly used surfaces.

How do you choose a vertical post?
Prioritize steadiness and stretch room over a product’s size label. A post that tips or shifts may be less appealing, and a short post may not let a cat extend its body comfortably. Veterinary guidance from Cornell, Seattle Humane, and the American Association of Feline Practitioners supports stable vertical posts with enough height for stretching.
- Look for a broad or secured base that resists movement during scratching.
- Check the usable scratching height against your cat’s full-body reach.
- Confirm that the scratching material covers the area your cat is likely to use, rather than relying on a product title alone.
The American Association of Feline Practitioners’ position statements are available through PubMed Central.

Where should you put a scratcher?
Place the first option near the furniture, rug, or other spot your cat already scratches. This makes the alternative available where the habit occurs. Feline-care guidance also supports offering scratchers in varied locations, including near places where cats sleep.
If one location or surface is ignored, try another placement or format and observe what your cat uses. The Feline Veterinary Medical Association’s Claw Friendly Educational Toolkit: Scratching Resources covers different types, surfaces, and placements.

What if your cat will not use the scratcher?
- Match the direction. If your cat targets vertical furniture, try a sturdy upright post; if the target is a rug, try a horizontal pad.
- Offer a different texture. Try another supported surface, such as cardboard, sisal, rough fabric, or wood.
- Move it to the established scratching area. A scratcher placed elsewhere may not meet the habit where it happens.
- Offer more than one option. Vary orientation or surface and watch which one your cat chooses. Acceptance is individual; no format guarantees use.
- Reassess fit and stability. Check that a vertical post allows a full stretch and does not wobble, and that a horizontal surface stays put.
What to verify before buying
Because product-level prices, dimensions, availability, and independent performance comparisons are not established here, inspect the current listing rather than treating a category label as proof of fit. Check:
- Orientation and the amount of usable scratching surface.
- Material, and whether it matches a texture your cat has used before.
- Base stability, mounting method, and overall footprint.
- For a post, whether the cat can stretch fully against it.
- Whether the scratch surface can be replaced, if that matters to you.
- Current price and availability from the seller.
