Scratching is normal cat behavior, not spite or misbehavior. Cats scratch while playing and stretching, to leave territorial signals, and to maintain their claws. The useful goal is not to stop every scratch, but to provide appealing places to scratch and protect the surfaces you want to keep.
Why does my cat scratch the couch?
Your cat is not scratching the couch to punish you. Scratching serves several purposes: it can accompany play or a full-body stretch, communicate territory, and help maintain the claws. A couch may simply be a convenient, satisfying surface in a place the cat already uses.

The Feline Veterinary Medical Association describes scratching as “a normal feline behavior–both inherited and learned.” The ASPCA’s advice follows from that: teach a cat where and what to scratch rather than trying to eliminate the behavior.

How do I stop my cat from scratching furniture?
Redirect the behavior by putting an acceptable scratching surface where the cat already wants to scratch, then make that surface rewarding. Protect the furniture while your cat learns the alternative.

- Place a scratcher beside the target. Put it directly next to or in front of the couch corner, chair, or other favored spot. Cats may also appreciate a scratcher near a resting place, where they can stretch after waking.
- Protect the furniture. Use a physical furniture protector on the target while keeping the scratcher accessible at that location. Protection and redirection work together: the goal is to make the approved surface available, not merely to block the old one.
- Reward scratcher use. When your cat uses it, offer a treat, toy, or attention. Let the cat discover the surface; do not force its paws onto the post, which can frighten it and make it avoid the post.
- Keep the arrangement responsive. If the cat continues choosing another place, reconsider the scratcher’s position, stability, orientation, or texture rather than assuming the cat is being defiant.
What kind of scratching post will my cat use?
There is no universally preferred scratcher. Offer options and watch which ones your cat chooses. Compare the practical features below when selecting a post or pad.
| Feature | What to look for |
|---|---|
| Stability | A post should not wobble when the cat leans into it. |
| Height | A vertical post should let the cat stretch its body fully. |
| Orientation | Try vertical, horizontal, and, if useful, slanted surfaces. Cats differ in how they like to scratch. |
| Texture | Offer different surfaces, such as sisal, cardboard, wood, or rough fabric, and observe the cat’s preference. |
| Placement | Choose a position beside the furniture target or near a resting place where the cat can readily use it. |
These features are starting points, not guarantees. A tall, sturdy vertical post may suit a cat that stretches up to scratch; a horizontal pad may suit one that scratches along the floor. The cat’s observed choices are the best guide.

Is scratching normal for cats?
Yes. Object scratching is a normal behavior with several functions, including play, stretching, territorial signaling, and claw maintenance. Because scratching is normal, punishment is not a useful solution: it does not give the cat an acceptable outlet and can make the interaction frightening. Redirect the cat to a suitable surface and reward that choice instead.

Declawing is not a routine fix for furniture scratching. The Feline Veterinary Medical Association strongly opposes elective declawing and describes the procedure, also called onychectomy, as amputation of the third phalanx. Its alternatives include providing suitable scratchers, trimming nails, temporary synthetic nail caps, and environmental enrichment.

Consider nail trimming as optional maintenance
Trimming claws can be part of care, but it does not replace providing a scratching outlet. Take small steps if your cat resists. Ask a veterinarian or groomer for help if trimming is difficult or stressful for your cat.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. When does scratching suggest a health problem?
This guidance is about scratching objects. Repeatedly scratching, licking, or biting the cat’s own skin is different. Arrange a veterinary examination if the behavior is excessive, focused repeatedly on one area, or accompanied by bald patches, redness, scaling, or scabs. Possible causes include parasites, allergies, skin conditions, environmental irritants, and stress; a veterinarian can assess what is affecting your cat.
