Yes, cats can develop high blood pressure, and it may cause no obvious symptoms until organs are damaged. A UK campaign from Ceva Animal Health is urging veterinary practices to increase screening during Feline Hypertension Awareness Months in May and June 2026, particularly for cats aged seven and over and those with chronic kidney disease or hyperthyroidism. Owners should arrange a blood-pressure check through a veterinary clinic rather than relying on home devices or visible signs alone.
What is the 2026 feline hypertension campaign asking practices to do?
Ceva’s campaign asks participating UK practices to increase documented blood-pressure measurements in cats at increased risk. Its Challenge 20 initiative focuses on recording more than 20 new measurements, with cats aged seven or older, cats with chronic kidney disease, cats with hyperthyroidism, and cats showing possible target-organ damage identified as priority groups.

Practices that log 20 measurements are reported as eligible for a £20 voucher for each group of 20 cats and a feedback session with a Ceva technical veterinarian. Those terms may change, so practices should confirm the current conditions directly before taking part. The campaign also provides posters, owner leaflets, email wording and social-media materials.
Ceva says its wider hypertension-awareness campaign has run in the UK and Europe each May since 2018. For veterinary professionals, it lists an eight-video, 1.5-hour continuing-professional-development series, “Under pressure: management of feline hypertension and concurrent disease,” presented by Royal Veterinary College professor Rosanne Jepson.

Why are older cats being targeted for blood-pressure checks?
High blood pressure is often clinically silent, while kidney, thyroid, eye and nervous-system disease can develop or worsen without an owner noticing early changes. A prospective 2024 study by Femke Mortier and colleagues at Ghent University illustrates why apparently well cats still merit surveillance.
| Finding | Population and qualification |
|---|---|
| 21% | Of 259 apparently healthy mature (7–10 years) and senior cats had previously unrecognized disease at baseline. |
| 28% and 54% | Of cats confirmed healthy at baseline developed clinically relevant disease within two years: 28% of mature adults and 54% of seniors. |
| 7.7% | Had IRIS stage 2-or-higher chronic kidney disease at baseline. |
| 4.6% | Had hyperthyroidism at baseline. |
| 10% | Of cats with a successful baseline blood-pressure measurement had systolic pressure above 160 mmHg. |
| 3% | Of cats confirmed healthy remained persistently hypertensive after repeat checks. |
The study’s figures come from a defined research group, not every cat population. Ceva’s 2026 campaign post separately estimates that 378,000 cats in a UK population exceeding 12 million live with hypertension; because the post does not describe its estimation method, that number should be treated as a campaign estimate rather than a population study.
What signs can feline hypertension cause?
Many cats show no distinctive signs, which is why screening matters. When effects become apparent, owners may notice behavior changes or vision changes. Sudden or worsening visual problems, unusual disorientation, weakness, seizures or other neurological abnormalities warrant prompt veterinary attention rather than waiting for a routine campaign appointment.

High blood pressure can accompany chronic kidney disease and hyperthyroidism, but an apparently normal examination does not rule it out. A cat that has reached seven years of age can therefore benefit from discussion of routine checks even if it is eating, grooming and using the litter tray normally.
How is a cat’s blood pressure measured?
The Ghent study used Doppler ultrasonography in accordance with American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine guidance. A veterinary team places an appropriately sized cuff, records systolic readings and interprets them alongside the cat’s clinical context. Handling, unfamiliar surroundings and anxiety can influence readings, so a single high value is not automatically a diagnosis.
In the study, a Doppler reading above 160 mmHg triggered further evaluation. If eye or other target-organ damage was not found, the researchers advised repeating the measurement. Confirmation is especially important because persistent hypertension and a temporary stress-related increase require different decisions.

- Ask for a calm, properly prepared appointment. Follow the clinic’s instructions about transport, feeding and arrival time.
- Allow acclimation before measurement. The veterinary team may give the cat time in a quiet room and use low-stress handling.
- Take several readings when appropriate. An elevated result should be interpreted with repeat measurements and the cat’s history.
- Investigate associated disease. Kidney, thyroid and eye assessments may be recommended, particularly for older or high-risk cats.
- Agree on follow-up. Ask when the next reading is due and which changes should trigger an earlier review.
How should owners choose a feline blood-pressure screening service?
Look for a veterinary clinic that can explain who will perform the measurement, what equipment is used and how an abnormal result is confirmed. A useful appointment includes a plan for evaluating kidney and thyroid disease, checking for eye or other target-organ damage when indicated, and arranging referral if the case is complex.
- Clinician training and suitable Doppler or validated veterinary equipment
- Repeat measurements rather than treatment based on one stressed reading
- Cat-handling and stress-reduction procedures
- Access to laboratory, eye and imaging assessments where needed
- Clear follow-up, referral and emergency arrangements
- Total cost and local availability
Consumer blood-pressure devices should not be treated as substitutes for veterinary diagnosis. The cited study supports Doppler measurement performed by a veterinary team; it does not establish that a particular home product is accurate or suitable for clinical decisions.
What did the 2025 campaign report?
Vet Times quoted Ceva senior product manager Andrew Fullerton on 24 April 2026: “More than 1,200 cats were screened during Ceva’s 2025 feline hypertension campaign and a third of them were identified as hypertensive.” That is a campaign report attributed to Ceva, not an independent prevalence study, and the quotation does not describe the cats’ risk profiles, measurement protocol or confirmation process.

What should an owner do now?
If your cat is seven or older, has kidney disease or hyperthyroidism, or has developed behavior or vision changes, contact a veterinary clinic and ask whether feline blood-pressure screening is appropriate. Bring medication details and previous laboratory results, and ask how an elevated reading will be repeated and investigated. Urgent visual or neurological changes need prompt veterinary assessment regardless of the campaign calendar.

Does every cat over seven need blood-pressure medicine?
No. Screening identifies cats that need confirmation and investigation; medication decisions depend on persistent readings, evidence of target-organ injury and underlying disease. A veterinarian should decide whether treatment, monitoring or additional tests are appropriate.
Can stress at the clinic make a cat’s reading look high?
Yes. Anxiety and handling can raise a measurement temporarily. Clinics can reduce this effect with quiet acclimation and repeat readings, and an isolated high result should be interpreted in context.

Should blood pressure be checked during a routine vaccination visit?
Ask the clinic whether it can combine screening with a routine examination, but vaccination, travel and the cat’s stress level may affect scheduling. The practice can recommend a separate low-stress appointment if that will produce more reliable readings.
What information should I bring to a screening appointment?
Bring a list of medicines and supplements, recent blood or urine results, and notes about thirst, urination, appetite, vision or behavior changes. These details help the veterinary team decide which concurrent conditions to investigate.
