Cat sedatives are not a one-size-fits-all way to make a cat sleepy. A veterinarian may recommend medication before a visit to reduce anticipatory fear, or the veterinary team may administer medication at the clinic to enable safe handling, an examination, or a procedure. The right choice depends on your cat’s health, previous reactions, and whether medication can be given without adding distress.
What people mean by “cat sedatives”
Caregivers often use “sedative” to mean any medicine that calms a cat. In veterinary care, it helps to distinguish planned medication before a visit from sedation given by professionals at the clinic. The goal is to reduce distress and allow appropriate care—not simply to make a cat drowsy. Medication choices, combinations, monitoring, and whether sedation or anesthesia is appropriate are decisions for the veterinary team.
FelineVMA practice guidelines offer recommendations, but the treating veterinarian applies professional judgment to the individual cat. That matters because a medicine that is suitable for one patient or setting may not be suitable for another.
Pre-visit medication and clinic-administered sedation are different approaches
| Approach | Where and when | Main purpose | What determines suitability |
|---|---|---|---|
| Pre-visit medication | Usually planned with the veterinarian and given before travel | Reduce anticipatory anxiety or make transport and handling easier | The cat’s medical history, current medicines, previous response, and whether giving the medication at home is manageable |
| Medication administered by the veterinary team | At the clinic, after arrival | Support safe handling, examination, or a procedure | The cat’s condition and behavior in the clinical setting, and the team’s assessment of appropriate medication and monitoring |
These approaches are not interchangeable, and there is no universally best drug or protocol for every cat. If attempting oral medication at home would be unsafe or highly stressful, call the clinic in advance. FelineVMA’s End-of-Life Toolkit describes veterinary-team administration of an appropriate sedative and anti-anxiety medication on arrival when pre-arrival oral dosing creates excessive stress. That advice comes from a specific clinical context; your veterinarian should plan the approach for your cat and appointment.

Gabapentin: a commonly discussed pre-visit option
Gabapentin is discussed in feline-veterinary materials as an option for pre-visit anxiety and handling. FelineVMA’s 2022 conference proceedings summarize multiple small studies in differing populations and circumstances; reported outcomes include lower stress scores or improved compliance in some settings. Those study regimens are not universal instructions for owners, and the evidence does not establish that gabapentin is appropriate for every cat.
Effects and health details to discuss
Possible effects described in the proceedings include drowsiness, muscle relaxation, and ataxia (unsteady movement). Gabapentin is renally excreted, so kidney disease is important to disclose. Before the visit, tell the clinic about your cat’s diagnoses, all current medicines, and any previous reaction to medication. The veterinarian must decide whether gabapentin is appropriate and provide exact instructions for that cat. Do not use a human prescription or choose a dose yourself.

If your cat is being evaluated for high blood pressure
FelineVMA’s Hypertension Toolkit says gabapentin’s effect on blood pressure is unclear and advises recording the dose and time it was given. The toolkit also notes that trazodone significantly lowered systolic blood pressure in one study of healthy cats; that single finding should not be generalized to every patient. Tell the clinic what your cat received and when so the veterinarian can interpret measurements in context.
Prepare your cat and carrier before appointment day
Medication is only one part of a visit plan. FelineVMA’s 2025 transportation statement recommends using an appropriate carrier, acclimating and training the cat to it, and providing a hiding opportunity—for example, by covering the carrier with a towel or blanket. If possible, start carrier practice before the day of the appointment. A carrier can support transport and hiding, but it is not a treatment for anxiety.

- Give your cat time to become familiar with the carrier before travel where possible.
- Use a towel or blanket over the carrier to create a hiding opportunity, as appropriate for the journey.
- If you do not think you can give prescribed pre-visit medication safely, call the clinic rather than forcing the attempt.
When you call, explain what makes medication or transport difficult. Ask whether the team can administer medication on arrival, whether you should arrive at a particular time, or whether the visit needs a different plan.

If your veterinarian has prescribed a tablet or capsule, Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine advises following it with about a teaspoonful (5–6 ml) of water, given by dropper or oral syringe, to help reduce the chance that the medication lodges in the esophagus. This is administration guidance for a prescribed medicine, not a reason to medicate without veterinary advice. Ask the veterinary team to demonstrate safe technique, particularly if your cat resists; if administration is difficult, contact the clinic for an alternative plan.
