If your cat has suddenly—or newly—started acting as though it cannot see, contact a veterinarian or emergency clinic now. Do not wait to see whether the problem clears on its own: some causes can permanently damage vision, while prompt treatment may preserve or restore some sight. Only an examination can identify the cause.

How to recognize possible vision loss

A cat with impaired sight may bump into familiar furniture, struggle to find its food bowl, hesitate before jumping, move less, or seem confused, withdrawn, or fearful. The pupils may stay enlarged even in bright light; if one eye is affected, the pupils may look different in size.

Not every case that seems sudden began overnight. Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine distinguishes truly sudden blindness from blindness that has developed gradually and only recently become noticeable. Cats can compensate for declining vision until it becomes harder to navigate. A genuinely rapid loss over days may leave a cat especially confused or frightened.

Why a cat may lose vision

High blood pressure and retinal damage

High blood pressure (hypertension) is a leading concern, particularly in an older cat with new vision loss. It can injure blood vessels at the back of the eye, leading to bleeding, swelling, or retinal detachment. Kidney disease and hyperthyroidism are common conditions associated with hypertension. A veterinarian may also consider whether disorientation, imbalance, seizures, altered behavior, or weakness point to other effects of high blood pressure.

Other eye, retinal, or systemic problems

Retinal detachment can also be associated with trauma, inflammation inside the eye (uveitis), glaucoma, certain infections, or cancer. Injury to the eye or head, bleeding inside the eye, tumors, metabolic or blood abnormalities, and nutritional problems can also affect vision. The possible causes are varied, so behavior alone cannot identify which one is responsible.

Medication exposure

Cornell describes rare sudden retinal damage associated with ingestion of enrofloxacin, an antibacterial drug. Tell the veterinarian about every medication your cat takes or may have swallowed. Do not stop or change a prescribed medicine unless the veterinarian advises you to.

What to do while arranging veterinary care

  1. Call now. Contact your regular veterinarian or an emergency clinic and describe when you noticed the change and what you have observed. Treat suspected new vision loss as urgent, especially if your cat has an eye injury, a cloudy or bleeding eye, enlarged pupils, disorientation, or difficulty walking.
  2. Keep your cat safe indoors. Use a familiar, uncluttered area and block access to stairs and high furniture so a cat with impaired sight is less likely to fall or collide with objects.
  3. Transport securely. Place your cat in a secure carrier for the trip. Avoid carrying the cat loose in a vehicle.
  4. Do not try home treatment. Do not give human medication or use eye drops unless a veterinarian directs you. These safety measures do not treat the underlying cause.

What the veterinarian may examine

The assessment is meant to determine both where the problem is and what caused it. A clinician may examine the retina with an ophthalmoscope or a special lens. If the front of the eye is too opaque to see the retina, ultrasound may help assess the back of the eye. A normal-looking outer eye alone does not rule out a serious vision problem.

Depending on the findings, testing to investigate the cause may include blood-pressure measurement, a blood count and chemistry tests, thyroid evaluation, or targeted tests for infection, uveitis, or glaucoma. A referral to a veterinary ophthalmologist may be appropriate.

Treatment and the chance of recovering sight

Treatment depends on the diagnosis. If hypertension is responsible, the veterinarian may prescribe medication to control blood pressure and investigate or manage an underlying kidney or thyroid disorder. In selected cases, an ophthalmologist may consider surgery for retinal tears or tumors. Treatment may involve follow-up examinations and monitoring.

The outlook depends on the cause and how quickly it is treated. Some vision may return when hypertension-related retinal detachment is addressed early, but recovery is not assured. Cornell notes that many cats already clinically blind when examined do not regain sight. VCA warns that retinal detachment left untreated for even a few days can permanently affect vision. That is why suspected new blindness warrants prompt veterinary assessment, even if the cat otherwise seems well.
