A swollen nose is a sign, not a diagnosis. A sting or injury may cause sudden swelling, while an abscess, dental problem, nasal disease, foreign material, fungal infection, or—less commonly—a tumor can look similar. Seek emergency veterinary care for breathing difficulty or signs of a severe allergic reaction; arrange an examination for swelling that persists, worsens, hurts, or comes with other symptoms.

When a swollen nose is an emergency

Go to an emergency veterinarian now if your cat has trouble breathing, is panting or breathing with its mouth open, or develops severe swelling around the head or neck. Other urgent warning signs include collapse, hives, excessive drooling or trouble swallowing, vomiting or diarrhea, disorientation, stumbling, or seizures—especially after a possible insect sting.

VCA Animal Hospitals says allergic reactions usually occur within 20 minutes of a sting but may be delayed for hours. If a sting is possible, watch your cat closely and contact emergency care if any of these signs appear. VCA’s insect-sting guidance explains the potential for serious reactions.

What can cause a cat’s nose to swell?

Appearance alone cannot reliably distinguish these causes. The timing, location, progression, accompanying symptoms, and a veterinary examination help narrow them down.

Insect sting or allergic reaction

A sting can cause sudden, localized swelling around the nose. Insects may sting exposed areas of a cat’s face; a reaction can remain local or become a life-threatening allergic emergency. The timing can be rapid or delayed, so a cat that seems well immediately after a suspected sting still needs close observation.

Injury, bite wound, or abscess

A bite, scratch, or puncture can introduce bacteria and lead to an abscess. Swelling may be painful and may occur with red skin, hair loss, foul discharge, reduced appetite, or lethargy. Facial swelling can also result from infection at a tooth root. An abscess may need veterinary drainage and cleaning, medication, or treatment of the affected tooth. PetMD’s overview of cat abscesses describes common signs and veterinary treatment.

Nasal inflammation or infection

Feline viral rhinotracheitis and calicivirus are common causes of acute rhinitis, or inflammation of the nasal passages; a secondary bacterial infection can also occur. Signs may include nasal discharge, sneezing, pawing at the face, or noisy breathing. Open-mouth breathing or bluish coloring is particularly concerning and warrants emergency care. Merck Veterinary Manual’s rhinitis and sinusitis reference covers these conditions and their evaluation.

Dental disease

An infected tooth root can cause facial swelling and may extend into the maxillary recess, contributing to rhinitis or sinusitis. A dental source may not be obvious from the outside, so persistent swelling needs an examination rather than home treatment.

Foreign material in the nose

Material lodged in a nasal passage can trigger acute rhinitis. Sudden discharge from one nostril, sometimes with pawing at the face, may point toward a foreign body, but it does not confirm one.

Fungal disease or chronic nasal disease

Fungi including Cryptococcus, Aspergillus, and Penicillium can cause rhinosinusitis. Merck notes that cats are more often affected by Cryptococcus than dogs. In cats with nasal cryptococcosis, approximately 35% have a facial deformity described as a dorsal lump at the front of the nose near the sinus. That figure applies to cats with this specific infection, not to cats generally or to all swollen noses.

Chronic discharge that starts on one side and later affects both sides, or becomes bloody or serosanguineous, can suggest fungal disease or a nasal tumor. These signs call for veterinary investigation; they do not establish either diagnosis.

When to arrange a veterinary appointment

Contact your veterinarian promptly if swelling is persistent, worsening, painful, unexplained, or accompanied by discharge, sneezing, pawing at the face, appetite loss, or lethargy. A cat does not need to be in respiratory distress for nasal swelling to merit assessment: infections, dental disease, foreign material, fungal disease, and masses may require targeted treatment.

What to do while arranging care

  • Keep your cat calm and observe its breathing, alertness, eating, and drinking while you contact a veterinarian.
  • Do not give human medicines, use leftover prescriptions, or apply topical products without veterinary advice. Some human medications contain ingredients that can be toxic or lethal to animals.
  • Do not squeeze, puncture, or try to drain the swelling. Treatment depends on the cause and may require examination and testing.
  • Ask a veterinarian before giving an antihistamine; the correct choice and dose require professional guidance.
  • If your cat persistently scratches or licks the area, an Elizabethan collar may limit further trauma while you arrange care. It is supportive only, not a treatment for the underlying cause or a reason to delay veterinary assessment. VCA’s cone-collar guidance notes that constant scratching can delay healing and cause infection.

How a veterinarian may identify the cause

The veterinarian will take a history and examine your cat. Depending on the findings, evaluation may include imaging such as radiographs or CT, rhinoscopy to view the nasal passages, nasal or tissue biopsy, sampling, or culture. For a suspected abscess, examination and sampling may help identify infection and guide treatment.

The right treatment follows the diagnosis: an abscess may need drainage and cleaning, antibiotics and pain control; an infected tooth may need removal; fungal disease and tumors call for different, cause-specific approaches. Merck notes that advanced imaging and biopsy may identify a specific cause in as few as 36% of cats evaluated for chronic nasal disease. That figure describes diagnostic yield in that context, not the likelihood that a particular cat’s swollen nose has a given cause.
