Blood in a cat’s vomit needs prompt veterinary advice. Call your veterinarian or an emergency clinic now, describe what you saw and any other symptoms, and mention possible exposure to medication, toxins, plants, string, or other objects. If your cat is weak, collapsed, has pale gums, is vomiting repeatedly or severely, has had trauma, or may have swallowed a toxin or medication, seek emergency veterinary care.

What to do if your cat vomits blood

  1. Call a veterinarian now. Cornell Feline Health Center advises prompt evaluation when blood is present in vomit, and VCA recommends immediate veterinary care. Tell the clinic when the vomiting started, how often it has happened, what the blood looked like, and whether your cat has other symptoms.
  2. Report possible exposures. Mention any access to human or veterinary medicines, toxins, plants, string, or other foreign objects. Keep the product packaging or label available if you suspect a particular substance.
  3. Do not try to treat the problem at home. Do not induce vomiting unless a veterinarian specifically tells you to, and do not give medication unless directed by a veterinarian. Cornell’s guidance on common cat hazards specifically warns against inducing vomiting without veterinary direction.

Do not use the amount or appearance of blood to decide that it is safe to wait. The available guidance does not establish a reliable way to identify the cause or judge whether home monitoring is safe from the vomit’s appearance alone.

When is it an emergency?

Blood in vomit warrants prompt veterinary contact. Seek emergency care particularly urgently if vomiting is severe or prolonged, your cat is weak or collapsed, its gums look pale, it has suffered trauma, or it may have ingested a medication or toxin. These signs can accompany serious illness and should be reported to the clinic when you call.

Possible causes of blood in a cat’s vomit

Vomiting blood is a sign, not a diagnosis. A veterinarian may consider several different digestive, exposure-related, infectious, or systemic problems. The following are possible categories, not a ranked list or a way to diagnose your cat at home; the sources do not establish how frequently each occurs in cats vomiting blood.

#1 Best Overall

  • ACCURATE READINGS: Exceeds the minimum acceptable accuracy criteria specified in ISO 15197:2013.
  • BUILT SPECIFICALLY FOR YOUR DOG OR CAT. Better control over glucose levels may help minimize complication and avoid unn
  • 25+ YEARS OF CARE: UltiCare continues to create products and medicines designed with care in mind.

Digestive inflammation, ulcers, or other bleeding

  • Inflammatory bowel or other gastrointestinal disease: Inflammation and other digestive disorders can cause vomiting; blood may prompt investigation of the digestive tract.
  • Ulceration or other gastrointestinal bleeding: A veterinarian may look for ulcers or another source of bleeding in the digestive system.
  • Growths or tumors: Benign or cancerous growths in the gastrointestinal tract are among the possibilities a veterinarian may investigate.

Foreign material, poisons, or medicines

  • Swallowed material or an obstruction: String and other foreign objects can cause serious digestive problems, including obstruction.
  • Poison or irritating substance exposure: Some plants and household substances can make cats ill. Tell the veterinarian what your cat could have reached.
  • Medication exposure or adverse drug effects: Medicines can be harmful to cats, and human medicines in particular should not be given unless a veterinarian directs it.

Infection, parasites, or disease elsewhere in the body

  • Parasites or infection: These may be considered as causes of vomiting.
  • Pancreatitis: Inflammation of the pancreas is another possible cause.
  • Kidney disease or failure: Kidney problems can be associated with vomiting.
  • Liver disease or failure: Liver problems are also among the conditions a veterinarian may investigate.

These categories come from general feline vomiting references; they do not establish which cause is present in an individual cat. Blood’s color, quantity, or appearance cannot safely identify the cause or show that waiting at home is appropriate.

What a veterinarian may do

The veterinarian will begin with your cat’s history and a physical examination. The tests recommended depend on what the examination suggests and how stable your cat is; not every cat needs every test.

  • Imaging: Abdominal X-rays or ultrasound may be used to look for problems such as foreign material or other abdominal disease.
  • Further examination: In some cases, endoscopy with biopsy may be considered to examine the digestive tract more closely.
  • Stabilization and hospital care: A severely ill cat may need intensive monitoring, fluids, blood products, or other critical care, depending on its condition.

Merck Veterinary Manual’s guidance on vomiting in cats, updated September 2024, describes these diagnostic approaches. Your veterinarian will choose the work-up and treatment based on the findings rather than using a fixed checklist.
