Yes. Eating catnip can cause diarrhea in some cats, particularly if they eat a large amount. It can also cause vomiting. But timing alone cannot establish that catnip is the cause: diarrhea has other possible explanations, too.
How catnip can lead to diarrhea
ASPCA lists vomiting and diarrhea among signs associated with catnip ingestion, and PetMD’s veterinarian-authored guide says that eating too much catnip can upset a cat’s digestive system. Zoetis also associates large quantities with vomiting and diarrhea. These sources support a possible reaction, not a predictable outcome for every cat.

There is no scientifically validated safe-dose threshold in these sources that applies to all cats. Cats also differ in how they respond to catnip: Texas A&M clinical associate professor Lori Teller notes that “not every cat is susceptible to these effects.” That behavioral variability does not tell you whether a particular cat will develop digestive symptoms.
ASPCA lists catnip in its toxic-plant reference, while veterinary and animal-health educational sources describe ordinary use as generally tolerated and warn that excessive ingestion can cause symptoms. The practical takeaway is neither that every exposure is poisonous nor that catnip is harmless in any amount: ingestion may be associated with vomiting or diarrhea, and a veterinarian can advise on an individual exposure.

Does the form of catnip matter?
Cats encounter catnip as a fresh plant, dried herb, spray, or stuffing in toys. The main distinction for this question is whether the cat eats it. A spray applied to an object offers the scent without serving catnip as loose plant material, but it does not guarantee that a cat will ingest none; some cats chew toys or lick treated surfaces. PetMD suggests spray as an option for cats that get an upset stomach from eating the plant, not as a treatment for diarrhea. Product ingredients and directions can vary.
Texas A&M describes catnip toys and loose herb as enrichment options. If your cat tends to chew or tear toys, consider whether the toy could let it eat the filling, and remove it if it is damaged.

What to do if diarrhea follows catnip
- Stop offering catnip. Remove the plant, loose herb, or toy, and prevent further access while you assess what happened.
- Check what your cat may have eaten. Note whether it was fresh or dried catnip, a spray-treated object, or a toy, and look for other ingredients or materials the cat could have swallowed.
- Contact your veterinarian if symptoms are severe, persist, come with other concerning changes, or the exposure is uncertain. The sources do not establish a catnip-specific duration after which diarrhea becomes an emergency, so seek professional guidance rather than relying on a fixed time rule.
- For a possible harmful ingestion, call a veterinarian promptly. Cornell advises immediate veterinary contact for suspected toxic ingestion and says not to induce vomiting unless a veterinarian specifically directs you to do so.
Do not give human anti-diarrhea medicine or try to induce vomiting without veterinary direction. If you are unsure whether the product or amount is concerning, contact a veterinarian for advice. ASPCA also advises contacting a veterinarian or its poison-control service when a potentially toxic substance may have been ingested.

The sources establish that catnip ingestion, especially in excess, can be associated with diarrhea and vomiting. They do not quantify how often this happens, define a universal amount that prevents symptoms, or establish catnip as a treatment for diarrhea. The FDA’s 2019 warning letter concerning disease-treatment marketing for a catnip product is a further reason not to treat such claims as established veterinary care.
