Its ten selections cover wet, dry, fresh, stew, pâté, and fully cooked freeze-dried foods. The useful takeaway is to compare each food with your cat’s life stage, health needs, preferences, and feeding routine rather than choosing by rank alone.

The roundup’s comparison table considers primary protein, guaranteed protein, ash, calcium, phosphorus, magnesium, calories per ounce, and estimated daily cost. Because the foods differ in moisture, ingredients, life-stage labeling, and format, one percentage cannot establish which is best for your cat. Cats.com says its daily-cost comparison assumes a healthy adult cat eating 200 calories per day; that is a comparison assumption, not an individual feeding recommendation. It also notes that automatically calculated nutrient charts based on guaranteed analysis may differ from values in the article body.

- Life stage and adequacy: Look for the food’s nutritional adequacy statement and confirm it matches your cat’s stage of life. A kitten food and an adult maintenance food should not be treated as equivalent.
- Health needs: For illness, a prescribed diet, allergy concerns, or other medical dietary questions, ask your veterinarian before changing foods.
- Format and routine: Consider whether wet, dry, fresh, stew, pâté, or freeze-dried food fits your cat’s preferences and your ability to serve and store it according to its label.
- Calories and cost: Compare calorie density and the amount your cat would actually need, not just package price or an assumed daily-cost figure.
- Ingredients and nutrients: Review the full ingredient list and the labeled nutrient information together. Guaranteed-analysis protein is not the same thing as protein digestibility.

Cats.com’s named expert, pet nutritionist and food formulator Emma Passman, advises prioritizing high-quality protein and considering balanced nutrients, life stage, activity, and specific dietary needs; she recommends consulting a veterinarian if unsure, as quoted by Cats.com.

Cats.com’s list is an editorial product roundup, not a regulatory approval or a clinical prescription. The Association of American Feed Control Officials says, “AAFCO does not regulate, test, approve or certify pet food.” It develops model language that states and other governing bodies may adopt; FDA and state jurisdictions enforce applicable pet-food laws and regulations. For a sick pet or a medical dietary concern, AAFCO directs owners to veterinary care and advice. Read its consumer guidance on understanding pet food.
