That does not make cats maintenance-free or universally easier: they still need daily care, play, social interaction, veterinary attention, and an environment suited to their needs. The right choice depends on your household, routine, space, budget, and the individual animal.
Why cats may suit some households better
“Better” is a matter of fit, not a proven ranking of the species. These reasons focus on practical differences that may make a cat work better for a particular person or home.

1. Indoor routines can be a natural fit
Cats can live indoors, which may suit people whose routines or homes make frequent outdoor trips difficult. Indoor life still needs to be engaging and safe: feline guidance calls for resting places, play that simulates hunting, foraging opportunities, vertical territory, and clean toileting areas. The 2024 AAFP/ISFM indoor-cat guidance treats those needs as part of responsible indoor care.

2. No scheduled outdoor bathroom trips
Dogs need outdoor access multiple times a day for elimination and exercise, according to the AVMA’s dog-selection guidance. A cat’s litter box can make bathroom access more compatible with an indoor routine, provided it is kept clean and accessible.

3. A day away from home may be easier to plan
If your schedule varies, not having to arrange several daily outdoor elimination trips can simplify planning. That is not a reason to leave a cat without care: food, water, a clean litter area, interaction, and attention to health remain part of the commitment.
4. A smaller starter-supply footprint in one dated estimate
In its 2021 illustrative budget, ASPCA listed initial one-time costs of $455 for a cat and $1,030 for a dog. These are dated example totals, not current prices or a guarantee for an individual pet. The cat list includes cat-specific basics such as a litter box, scratching post, and carrier. See ASPCA’s cost table for its itemized assumptions.
5. You can build exercise into indoor play
Indoor cats need opportunities to move and engage their instincts. Play that resembles hunting and activities that encourage foraging help make indoor living more stimulating; simply providing a room is not enough. Dogs also need exercise, and the form and amount depend on the individual dog’s activity level and other characteristics.

6. Vertical space can make a home more usable
Feline indoor-environment guidance identifies vertical territory as one component of a suitable home. In a home where safe elevated resting places can be provided, that may offer a useful way to enrich the cat’s environment without relying only on floor space.
7. Their toileting setup can stay indoors
A litter area gives a cat an indoor toileting option. This can be convenient compared with a dog’s need for outdoor elimination access, but it creates a daily household task: the toileting area must remain clean and appropriate for the cat.
8. Your home may not need a dog-style outdoor exercise routine
People who cannot reliably build outdoor exercise into several points of the day may find a cat’s indoor routine easier to accommodate. Cats still require exercise and enrichment, so the advantage is about where and how care is organized—not the absence of activity needs.

Why cats may match your preferred pace and setup
9. They may fit a home where outdoor access is difficult
An apartment or home without convenient outdoor access may be workable for a cat if it has safe territory, play, rest, foraging, and clean toileting resources. That does not establish that cats are automatically better apartment pets; the animal’s needs and the home’s actual layout matter.
10. You can assess the household before choosing
Choosing a pet is a household decision. The AVMA advises prospective dog owners to weigh factors including work schedule, home type, exercise access, other pets, future changes, and ability to afford veterinary care. The same practical questions—along with whether you can provide the cat-specific indoor resources above—help determine which animal is the better fit for your home.
11. You can avoid a routine centered on dog walks
If regular walks are not an activity you can sustain, a cat may suit your routine better. This is a preference and schedule consideration, not a claim that cats need no daily engagement: play, social interaction, and attention to health remain essential.

12. Your household may prefer a litter-box routine
Some people would rather maintain an indoor toileting area than plan outdoor bathroom trips. Others may dislike litter maintenance. The practical advantage depends on which recurring task better fits the household.
13. A cat may fit people with limited outdoor exercise access
If safe or convenient outdoor access is limited, a cat can be a reasonable choice when you can still provide an enriched indoor environment. Consider whether you can make room for safe resting places, vertical territory, play, foraging, and a clean toilet area.

Neither “cat” nor “dog” tells you everything about a particular pet. The AVMA notes that dogs’ needs vary with size, breed or type, activity level, grooming, training, and temperament. Cats also vary as individuals, so meet and assess the animal rather than relying on a species-wide stereotype.

15. Their care can align with a quieter household schedule
For people who want a companion compatible with an indoor-focused daily routine, a cat may be a more practical match than a dog whose care includes multiple daily outdoor trips. The question is whether your routine can meet the cat’s own social, environmental, and health needs.
16. You may prefer indoor enrichment to outdoor outings
Some households would rather provide activities at home than organize regular outdoor exercise and elimination trips. Feline guidance gives that choice real responsibilities: offer play, foraging, resting options, vertical territory, and appropriate toileting resources.
17. You can plan around a cat-specific set of essentials
A cat’s starter setup includes items such as a litter box, scratching post, and carrier in ASPCA’s example budget. Planning for those basics can make the needs of a new cat more concrete before adoption, while recognizing that the 2021 estimate is not a current quote.

18. The best pet is the one whose needs you can meet
If your home and schedule suit a cat’s indoor needs better than a dog’s outdoor routine, a cat may be the better pet for you. If you have the time, space, resources, and desire to meet a dog’s needs, a dog may be the better choice. The useful comparison is not which species wins, but which individual animal can thrive with the care you can provide.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Are cats easier or cheaper to care for?
Not categorically. Cats avoid the requirement for multiple daily outdoor trips that AVMA describes for dogs, but indoor cats need deliberate enrichment and clean toileting facilities. ASPCA’s 2021 illustrative annual totals were $1,149 for a cat and $1,391 for a dog; its one-time totals were $455 and $1,030, respectively. Those historical examples reflect the table’s assumptions and should not be treated as current market averages or a prediction of what a particular pet will cost.
ASPCA’s responsible-care criteria include appropriate food and clean water, veterinary care, exercise, social interaction, and prompt attention to illness or injury. For dogs, AVMA also describes feeding, grooming, exercise, play, and elimination as daily care needs. The overall workload and cost will depend on the animal and household.
Quick Recap
How to decide between a cat and a dog
- Map your routine. Decide whether you can provide a dog with outdoor access multiple times each day, or whether an indoor cat routine better fits your schedule.
- Check your home. Consider the available space for safe rest, play, vertical territory, and a clean litter area if you are considering a cat; also consider outdoor exercise access for a dog.
- Account for everyone at home. Include other pets, household preferences, and likely future changes in your decision.
- Budget for ongoing care. Plan for food, veterinary care, and the daily needs of the individual animal. Do not use ASPCA’s 2021 illustrative totals as current quotes.
- Choose the animal, not the stereotype. Consider the particular pet’s temperament and needs, and be realistic about the care you can sustain for its lifetime.
