That was the central idea behind Pawport’s CES 2025 presentation. The company showed an upgraded indoor Smart Pet Door alongside an Outdoor Pet Door designed to create a two-door system. The result is potentially more secure, better sealed, and considerably more polished-looking than a basic flap. But there are important qualifications: the indoor unit is not waterproof by itself, the security claims are manufacturer claims rather than independent break-in test results, and the complete installation can cost substantially more than the headline product price.
What Pawport showed at CES 2025
Pawport announced the upgraded Smart Pet Door on January 6, 2025. Its pitch was aimed at homeowners who already have an unattractive or vulnerable pet-door opening, as well as people planning a new installation.

The indoor Smart Pet Door is the electronically controlled component. Pawport also presented an Outdoor Pet Door intended to sit outside it, creating an additional barrier against rain, pests, heat loss, and potential intrusion. In other words, Pawport is not merely adding an app to a plastic flap. It is trying to make the entire opening behave more like a controlled door.
CES recognized Pawport as a 2025 Honoree in the Pet & Animal Tech category. The award description highlighted retrofit installation, Wi-Fi connectivity, remote control, curfews, voice control through Alexa, Siri, and Google, and pet-specific activity data.
How the Smart Pet Door decides who gets in
Each authorized animal wears a small waterproof Pawport Smart Pet Tag on its collar. When the door detects a paired tag, it can unlock and open for that particular pet. A pet without an authorized tag should not be able to activate the door simply by pressing against it.
Pawport says one Smart Pet Door can pair with up to 10 Smart Pet Tags. The app can then apply different permissions and schedules to individual pets. That matters in a multi-pet household: a dog could have outdoor access during the day while a cat, puppy, or recovering animal remains indoors.
Useful access controls
- Individual schedules: Set curfews or access windows for particular pets.
- Remote locking and unlocking: Change the door’s state from the app rather than walking to the door.
- Adjustable detection range: Pawport documents separate inside and outside detection preferences of approximately 1 to 6 feet.
- Open duration: Choose whether the door remains open for 5, 10, or 15 seconds after activation.
- Notifications and activity data: The app can report activity and provide pet-specific usage information.
- Multiple-door management: The app can manage access across more than one Pawport door.
The detection-distance setting is especially important for installation and behavior. A short range may reduce accidental activations near the doorway; a longer range may make entry easier for a hesitant pet. The right setting will depend on the door’s location, the pet’s approach, and whether other animals or people regularly pass nearby.
Smart-home control is part of the appeal
Pawport documents compatibility with Google Home, Amazon Alexa, and Siri Shortcuts. That allows the pet door to participate in routines or voice-controlled smart-home scenes rather than operating as an isolated gadget.
For example, a household could incorporate the door into a bedtime routine or use a voice command to lock it before leaving. That convenience should not be confused with fully automatic safety: owners still need to check whether a pet is outside, whether the tag is attached correctly, and whether the selected schedule makes sense for weather and household routines.

Pawport also describes weather-related automation. The app can use rain and lightning detection to lock the door while preserving a one-way re-entry path for a pet that is already outside. That is a thoughtful compromise: the system can limit new trips outdoors without trapping an animal on the wrong side.
Still, “more secure” should be read as a description of Pawport’s architecture, not as an independently verified performance result. The available evidence establishes the company’s documented hardware and software features, not long-term reliability testing or a laboratory test showing that the opening is burglar-proof, wildlife-proof, or bulletproof.
The biggest catch: the indoor unit is not waterproof
Pawport says the Smart Pet Door is designed for indoor use and must be protected from direct precipitation. That means a homeowner with an exposed wall installation should not buy the indoor door alone and assume the opening is weatherproof.

Pawport lists three ways to provide that protection:
- Pair the Smart Pet Door with the Pawport Outdoor Pet Door.
- Install the unit beneath ample overhead coverage, such as a sheltered porch.
- Mount it over an existing pet-door frame while leaving the original flap in place as a rain barrier.
This caveat changes both the installation plan and the budget. A complete two-door system may be the sensible choice for an exposed opening, while a covered patio or an existing flap may make the additional outdoor component unnecessary.
Retrofit installation versus cutting a new opening
Pawport’s strongest use case is a retrofit. The Smart Pet Door mounts onto or over an existing pet-door frame, and Pawport says professional installation is not required for that type of project. The company also advertises a 30-day fit guarantee on its product page.
That does not mean every size fits every opening. Measure the existing cutout and the pet before ordering. Pawport publishes these approximate retrofit dimensions and opening limits:

Those figures describe the published product and opening ranges, not a substitute for measuring the actual installation. Also check the pet’s shoulder width, chest height, turning space, and ability to step over the threshold. A door that technically fits the opening may still be uncomfortable for a large or mobility-limited animal.

For a new wall opening, remodel, replacement installation, or tunnel installation, Pawport points buyers toward its Tunnel & Frame System. The company strongly recommends professional help for installations where no pet door already exists, although an experienced DIY homeowner may be able to complete the work. Cutting into masonry, siding, glass, or a structural door can create water-intrusion and structural problems, so this is the situation where a certified Pawport installer makes the most sense.
Power, Wi-Fi, and what happens during an outage
Plug-in power is included through a power supply and a 10-foot USB-C cable. Pawport also documents concealed-power or hardwired options, along with rechargeable batteries for cordless operation or backup.
The door’s basic operation does not require Wi-Fi, according to Pawport. That is an important distinction. A Wi-Fi outage should not stop a tagged pet from using the door, but remote app control does require a stable Wi-Fi connection. A mains-power outage is a separate problem and is where a battery becomes relevant.

Pawport’s battery figures are manufacturer estimates, not independent runtime measurements. The smaller 6.4 Ah battery is described as providing emergency backup for up to 24 hours. The larger 57.6 Ah battery is described as lasting approximately three weeks between charges, depending on use. Actual runtime will vary with traffic, temperature, configuration, and how the system is installed.
Which accessories are actually necessary?
The accessory list can look extensive, but most components solve a particular installation problem. Buying every option is unlikely to be necessary.
- Outdoor Pet Door: The most relevant addition for an exposed installation or anyone wanting Pawport’s two-door weather and security concept. See the Pawport outdoor pet door as part of a complete system rather than assuming the indoor door is weatherproof alone.
- Tunnel & Frame System: Intended for a new, remodeled, or replacement opening rather than a straightforward retrofit.
- Rechargeable battery: Worth considering when a power outage could leave the door unusable or when a concealed, cordless installation is important. A Pawport battery backup is not essential for every plug-in retrofit.
- Exterior Sensor: A conditional accessory for layouts or environmental conditions that interfere with precise location detection. Pawport says ordinary use and complete systems with the Outdoor Pet Door generally do not require it. Consider the Pawport exterior sensor only if the installation presents that problem.
- Concealed Power Kit, charging dock, solar panel, and glass mount: These address specific power, charging, solar, or mounting requirements rather than being standard upgrades everyone needs.
Price and buying context
Pawport’s official storefront currently displays the Smart Pet Door at $699, with plug-in power included. The Outdoor Pet Door, tunnel and frame, battery, solar panel, charging dock, exterior sensor, and other accessories are presented separately.
Prices, inventory, and “coming soon” statuses can change, so $699 should be treated as the current displayed price for the indoor unit—not as the price of a complete exposed-wall installation. The correct total depends on whether you are retrofitting an existing opening, adding the outdoor door, requiring a tunnel and frame, choosing battery backup, or paying for professional work.

Who should consider Pawport?
Pawport’s retrofit smart pet door is most compelling for:
- Homeowners who already have a pet-door opening but dislike its appearance or security limitations.
- Households that need different access schedules for different pets.
- Owners concerned about neighborhood animals, pests, or unauthorized animals using an always-open flap.
- Smart-home users who want pet access tied to an app, voice assistant, notifications, or routines.
- People willing to pay a premium for a more finished-looking, lockable installation.
It is less attractive if your priority is the lowest possible cost, if you only need a simple flap, or if there is no practical way to protect the indoor unit from rain. It may also be excessive for a sheltered indoor-through-wall installation where intrusion and wildlife are not meaningful concerns.

- Do I have an existing pet-door opening, or will I need a new wall, door, window, or tunnel installation?
- Is the mounting location protected from direct rain and snow?
