The Chihuahua is tiny in body but rarely tiny in personality. This alert, devoted breed can be lively, vocal, confident, and surprisingly athletic. Chihuahuas may thrive in apartments, but they still need daily activity, training, dental care, and careful handling. Their small size also creates specific risks: falls, rough play, cold temperatures, obesity, and injuries from being stepped on or dropped.
Before choosing one, look beyond the breed’s portable size. A Chihuahua can be an excellent companion for the right household, but it is not automatically an easy, quiet, or low-maintenance dog.

Appearance and varieties
Chihuahuas are the smallest breed recognized by the American Kennel Club. The breed standard describes a compact dog with large, expressive eyes, upright ears, and a rounded “apple” head. The coat may be smooth and close to the body or long, soft, and fringed around the ears, legs, tail, and neck.

Terms such as teacup, micro, and pocket are marketing labels, not separate official Chihuahua varieties. Extremely small puppies can be more vulnerable to low blood sugar, fragile bones, dental crowding, and other health problems. “Deer head” is also a descriptive term rather than a separate AKC variety.
Chihuahuas come in many colors and patterns, including fawn, black, white, cream, chocolate, sable, and combinations of these. Merle coloring deserves particular caution: breeding merle dogs together can increase the risk of serious hearing and eye abnormalities. A prospective owner should ask how the color was produced and see the parents’ health records.
Chihuahua temperament
Most Chihuahuas form a close bond with one or two people. They are often affectionate at home but alert to unfamiliar people, noises, and animals. Some are outgoing and playful; others are cautious or easily overwhelmed. The breed’s reputation for being “feisty” often reflects fear, inadequate socialization, learned barking, or the fact that people tolerate behavior from a tiny dog that they would address in a larger one.
Chihuahuas may bark when someone approaches the home, when they see another dog, or when they want attention. Early training can make barking more manageable, but expecting a completely silent Chihuahua is unrealistic. Reward calm behavior, teach a quiet cue, and reduce triggers where possible. Do not punish growling: it is useful communication that can warn you a dog is uncomfortable.

Many Chihuahuas are also selective about other dogs and may need careful introductions.

Exercise and daily activity
A Chihuahua does not need miles of running each day, but it does need regular movement and mental stimulation. Most adults benefit from one or two short walks plus indoor play, sniffing, and brief training sessions. A secure harness is often preferable to putting pressure on the neck with a collar, particularly for dogs that pull or cough.
Small dogs can still become bored. Food puzzles, scent games, trick training, and supervised play help prevent nuisance barking and attention-seeking. Many Chihuahuas enjoy activities such as rally, agility adapted to their size, or nose work, provided jumps and equipment are appropriate and the dog is physically sound.
Puppies need frequent, gentle play rather than forced exercise. Avoid repeated high jumps from furniture, stairs, or a person’s arms. Patellar problems, fragile bones, and injuries from falls are serious concerns in a very small dog.
Training and socialization
Chihuahuas are intelligent but can be independent. They usually respond best to short, reward-based sessions using tiny treats, toys, and praise. Training should cover:
- Toilet training: Take the puppy out frequently, especially after sleeping, eating, drinking, and playing. A small bladder and reluctance to go outside in cold or wet weather can make house-training slower than owners expect.
- Recall and leash skills: Practice indoors first, then in secure areas. Never allow an unsupervised Chihuahua off leash near roads or unfamiliar dogs.
- Handling: Pair gentle touching of the feet, ears, mouth, and tail with rewards. This makes nail trims, grooming, and veterinary examinations less stressful.
- Socialization: Introduce the puppy gradually to people, calm dogs, household sounds, surfaces, travel, and appropriate handling. Socialization should be positive, not an overwhelming series of forced encounters.
Do not excuse biting or lunging because the dog is small. At the same time, physical punishment and intimidation can make defensive behavior worse. If a Chihuahua is snapping, guarding, or panicking, seek help from a qualified reward-based trainer or veterinary behavior professional.

Grooming a Chihuahua
Smooth-coated Chihuahuas need relatively little coat maintenance, but they still benefit from weekly brushing to remove loose hair and check the skin. Long-coated dogs generally need brushing several times per week, with extra attention behind the ears, around the ruff, under the legs, and around the tail where tangles can form.
Neither coat type makes the breed hypoallergenic. Chihuahuas shed, and allergens come from skin flakes, saliva, and other sources as well as hair.

- Teeth: Brush daily if possible, using dog toothpaste. Small breeds are especially prone to plaque, tartar, crowded teeth, and periodontal disease. Ask your veterinarian when professional dental cleaning is appropriate.
- Nails: Trim regularly. Overgrown nails can alter the dog’s posture and make walking uncomfortable.
- Ears: Check for redness, odor, discharge, or persistent scratching. Do not insert cotton swabs deep into the ear canal.
- Eyes: Occasional minor tearing can occur, but squinting, cloudiness, pain, or persistent discharge requires veterinary attention.
- Bathing: Bathe when dirty with a dog-safe shampoo and dry the dog thoroughly. Frequent bathing is not a substitute for brushing.
Cold-weather and home safety
Chihuahuas lose body heat quickly, especially puppies, elderly dogs, thin dogs, and smooth-coated individuals. In cold weather, use a properly fitted sweater or coat if the dog is comfortable wearing it, shorten outdoor outings when necessary, and provide a warm resting place. Shivering, weakness, confusion, or unusual lethargy can indicate that a dog is too cold and needs prompt attention.
Make the home safer by blocking access to tall furniture and open staircases. Do not let a Chihuahua jump repeatedly from a sofa or bed. A household should also have a clear “underfoot” rule: everyone checks floors, blankets, recliners, and doorways before moving.
Common Chihuahua health concerns
Chihuahuas can be long-lived, but their small size does not protect them from inherited disease. Conditions seen in the breed or in individual dogs include:

- Dental disease: Crowded mouths and small jaws can lead to severe tartar, gum inflammation, loose teeth, and pain.
- Patellar luxation: The kneecap can slip out of position, causing skipping, intermittent lameness, or arthritis.
- Heart disease: Degenerative valve disease and other cardiac problems may occur, particularly as dogs age. A new cough, reduced stamina, fainting, or breathing difficulty warrants veterinary assessment.
- Tracheal problems: Some small dogs develop a collapsing trachea, often associated with a dry, harsh cough. A harness may help reduce neck pressure, but coughing still needs veterinary evaluation.
- Eye disease: Chihuahuas can develop eye injuries and inherited or age-related eye disorders.
- Hydrocephalus and skull-related problems: These are more relevant to certain puppies and unusually small individuals. A persistent domed skull, seizures, poor coordination, abnormal behavior, or failure to thrive requires prompt veterinary care.
- Hypoglycemia in puppies: Very young or exceptionally small puppies may become dangerously weak if they do not eat. Weakness, tremors, wobbling, collapse, or seizures are emergencies.
- Obesity: A few extra ounces can represent a large percentage of a Chihuahua’s body weight. Measure food and count treats rather than feeding by appearance alone.
These are risks, not a diagnosis. Arrange routine veterinary examinations and ask for advice about vaccination, parasite prevention, dental care, weight, and age-appropriate screening.
Choosing a responsible Chihuahua breeder
A responsible breeder should let you see where the dogs live, meet the mother when possible, explain the parents’ temperaments, provide veterinary records, and take the puppy back or help rehome it if circumstances change. Be cautious of sellers who advertise “teacup” puppies, promise a guaranteed adult weight, offer many unrelated breeds, or will not show health documentation.
Ask for verifiable screening of both parents. Chihuahua parent-club recommendations commonly include evaluations for the patella, heart, and eyes. A DNA panel can be useful for some inherited conditions, but it does not replace a physical examination, cardiac assessment, or orthopedic and eye evaluations.
Choose a puppy that is alert, clean, appropriately social, and able to move normally. Extremely lethargic puppies, persistent coughing, diarrhea, discharge, breathing difficulty, or a puppy that seems unable to keep up with its littermates should be assessed by a veterinarian before purchase.
Feeding and weight control
Feed a complete, balanced diet made for the dog’s life stage. Puppies may need several small meals each day, particularly if they are very small, while healthy adults commonly eat two measured meals. Your veterinarian can recommend a schedule based on the dog’s age, weight, activity, and medical history.

Is a Chihuahua right for you?
A Chihuahua can suit an owner who wants a highly interactive companion and is prepared to train, supervise, and protect a small dog. It may be a poor match for someone seeking a dog that tolerates rough children, stays outdoors in cold weather, requires no training, or can be left alone for long periods without company or preparation.
Before bringing one home, consider whether you can commit to daily dental care, careful handling, regular veterinary visits, controlled socialization, and a long lifespan. The breed is small enough to carry, but it still has the needs and emotions of a full companion animal.
FAQ
Are Chihuahuas good family dogs?
They can be, especially with older children who know how to handle a small dog gently. Young children should always be supervised because falls, squeezing, and rough play can cause serious injury.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesDo Chihuahuas need a lot of exercise?
Most need low to moderate daily exercise, such as short walks, indoor play, sniffing, and training. They still need regular activity and mental stimulation, but puppies should not be pushed into repetitive jumping or strenuous exercise.
Are Chihuahuas hypoallergenic?
No. Smooth- and long-coated Chihuahuas shed and produce allergens. Individual allergy responses vary, so spending time with the specific dog is more useful than relying on breed claims.
Why does my Chihuahua shake?
Shaking can result from excitement, fear, cold, pain, low blood sugar, or illness. Warm the dog and reduce stress, but seek veterinary care promptly for weakness, wobbling, collapse, vomiting, seizures, breathing problems, or shaking that persists.
The Bottom Line
Chihuahuas are loyal, lively companions that can live well in small homes, but their care is not miniature. Plan for daily training and activity, meticulous dental care, cold-weather protection, weight control, and constant attention to injury risks. Choose health-tested parents and judge each dog as an individual rather than assuming every Chihuahua will have the same temperament or health.
