It does not show that growing up with a cat causes schizophrenia, nor can it predict an individual child’s future. The studies measured different kinds of exposure and produced conflicting results, so the finding calls for better research—not alarm about family pets.
What did the review find?
McGrath, Lim, and Saha’s systematic review and meta-analysis included 17 original-data studies. The authors identified 1,915 records and reviewed 106 full texts, searching five databases and gray literature for studies published from 1980 through May 30, 2023. Their review appeared online on December 2, 2023, and in a 2024 journal issue.
Across 10 studies, the unadjusted pooled odds ratio (OR) was 2.14 (95% confidence interval [CI] 1.29–3.55). After excluding one outlier, the estimate across nine studies was 1.56 (95% CI 1.27–1.92). In adjusted analyses, the pooled OR was 2.44 (95% CI 1.59–3.73) across five studies; removing one study with suboptimal exposure or design features left an OR of 2.40 (95% CI 1.50–3.86) across four studies. These are associations in the included study samples, not individual risk estimates or evidence of cause and effect. Read the review and its reported analyses.
The estimates changed when studies were excluded, and the authors combined evidence that was not uniform. The pooled association is a signal worth investigating, but it should not be treated as settled proof.

What counted as cat exposure?
The review grouped several kinds of exposure, including cat ownership, cat bites, and contact with cats. Those are not interchangeable measures. Nor does any of them establish that a person acquired an infection. The review’s broad exposure category therefore cannot be read as a test of one specific biological cause or of cat ownership alone.
The studies also examined different outcomes, including diagnosed schizophrenia-related disorders and psychotic-like experiences. The authors could not calculate a pooled estimate for psychotic-like experiences because the studies used different measures, and the findings were mixed. A diagnosed disorder, a psychotic-like experience, and a schizotypal trait are not the same outcome.

Why do the study results differ?
A 2019 US cohort found no significant overall association
Yolken and colleagues analyzed 1,371 participants: 396 with schizophrenia or schizoaffective disorder, 381 with bipolar disorder, and 594 controls. For cat exposure before age 13, the adjusted hazard ratio for later schizophrenia was 1.13 (95% CI 0.90–1.43), which was not statistically significant. Some selected age-band comparisons were described as trends, not significant findings after accounting for multiple comparisons.
The authors noted limitations including retrospective self-report, participant-selection limits, and incomplete socioeconomic and other exposure data. Read the 2019 cohort study.

A 2022 Saudi Arabian case-control study reported a different pattern
That study found that participants diagnosed with schizophrenia more often recalled childhood cat ownership than controls. It also called for more in-depth research and adjustment for potential confounders. A case-control finding from one setting does not establish that cat ownership caused schizophrenia or that the result generalizes to other populations. Read the Saudi Arabian study.
The pooled analysis has also drawn methodological scrutiny
A 2024 correction addressed an included study’s exposure variable and subgroup analysis. A separate 2024 methodological commentary raised concerns about analytical decisions in the meta-analysis. These issues are reasons to interpret the pooled estimates cautiously, not a basis for replacing them with a causal conclusion. Read the correction and the methodological commentary.

Does Toxoplasma gondii explain the association?
The review discusses Toxoplasma gondii, a parasite associated with cats, as one possible pathway. But cat ownership is only a proxy for possible exposure; it does not show that someone was infected. The parasite can also be acquired through contaminated food or water, so pet ownership alone cannot identify the route of exposure.
A separate systematic review of T. gondii and schizophrenia described limitations in that literature, including limited adjustment for other factors and relatively few studies that addressed whether infection preceded schizophrenia diagnosis. The available evidence does not establish that T. gondii causes schizophrenia or explains the cat-exposure findings. Read the 2022 systematic review.
What should cat owners take from this?
These studies do not show that a particular child is likely to develop schizophrenia because a cat lives in the home. They also do not support blaming cats, giving up a pet, or using a test or intervention to prevent schizophrenia. The review authors’ conclusion was: “There is a need for more high-quality studies in this field.”
Stronger studies would need to distinguish ownership, bites, contact, and measured infection; establish when exposure occurred; use clearly defined outcomes; account for relevant confounders; and test whether findings persist under sensitivity analyses. Until then, the association remains uncertain.
