A Chipoo is a Chihuahua–Poodle cross, usually bred from a Chihuahua and a Toy or Miniature Poodle. These small dogs can be bright, affectionate, energetic, and entertaining—but they are not as predictable as an established breed. Adult size, coat, barking, sociability, and even overall temperament can vary substantially from one Chipoo to another.
That unpredictability is important when deciding whether this mix fits your home. A Chipoo may suit an apartment, but it still needs daily exercise, training, companionship, grooming, and careful dental care. Its small body also makes supervision around children and larger dogs essential.

What is a Chipoo?
The Chipoo is a designer mixed breed created by crossing a Chihuahua with a Poodle. The Poodle parent is generally Toy or Miniature rather than Standard. “Chi-Poo” and “Poochi” are also used for the same cross.

Unlike a recognized breed, the Chipoo has no universally accepted breed standard. There is no official specification requiring a particular height, weight, coat, color, head shape, or temperament. Two puppies from different Chipoo litters can look and behave quite differently, and even puppies in the same litter may not develop identical coats or adult sizes.

Size and appearance
Advertised Chipoo sizes are often narrower than reality. A practical adult-weight range is about 4–15 pounds, based largely on whether the Poodle parent is Toy or Miniature. A Toy Poodle is no more than 10 inches tall and typically weighs 4–6 pounds, while a Miniature Poodle is larger. Chihuahua parents are generally 5–8 inches tall and no more than 6 pounds under the AKC standard. These are parent-breed figures—not a formal Chipoo size standard.
A puppy’s current weight cannot guarantee its adult weight. The parents’ size and the puppy’s individual genetic inheritance provide useful clues, but they do not produce a precise prediction. Be especially cautious of sellers promising that every puppy will mature at a particular weight.

- A compact body and small frame
- Upright or dropped ears
- A short, straight coat resembling a Chihuahua’s
- A wavy or curly coat resembling a Poodle’s
- Many possible coat colors and facial structures
Coat texture, length, shedding, ear carriage, and facial shape are all variable. The label “teacup Chipoo” does not describe an officially recognized size variety. Terms such as “micro,” “tiny,” and “teacup” are marketing language and should not replace an assessment of the parents’ health and size.
Chipoo temperament
A Chipoo may combine the Chihuahua’s alert, confident, sometimes self-willed nature with the Poodle’s intelligence, activity, and trainability. That combination can produce a very engaging companion, but it can also produce a dog that is vocal, easily bored, sensitive, or defensive when poorly socialized.
Temperament is not guaranteed by the cross. Genetics, early handling, socialization, training, household routines, and previous experiences all matter. A Chipoo may be affectionate with its family but cautious around unfamiliar people. Some individuals attach closely to one person and dislike being left alone for long periods.
Barking is possible, especially because Chihuahuas are vigilant and often vocal. Training and early exposure to ordinary sights, sounds, visitors, and calm dogs can improve household manners, but they cannot guarantee a quiet dog. If you need a reliably silent companion, this mix may be a poor match.
Exercise and enrichment
Small size does not mean low energy. Most Chipoos need daily activity as well as something to think about. Suitable options include:

An apartment can work well if the dog receives consistent engagement. A small home is not a substitute for exercise, however. Without enough activity and mental stimulation, a Chipoo may bark, chew, become restless, or demand attention.
Take extra care with very small puppies. Avoid repeated jumping from furniture, rough play, and strenuous exercise if the dog is uncoordinated, fatigued, or showing signs of pain. A veterinarian can help set safe activity levels for an individual dog.
Training a Chipoo
Chipoos are often capable learners, but intelligence does not automatically produce cooperation. The Poodle side may enjoy training while the Chihuahua side may contribute independence or persistence. Use reward-based methods, short sessions, and clear household rules.
- Start with management. Use baby gates, a pen, or a leash indoors so a young puppy cannot rehearse unwanted behavior.
- Reward useful choices immediately. Mark and reward quiet behavior, coming when called, calm greetings, and settling on a mat.
- Keep sessions brief. Several short sessions are usually more productive than one long lesson.
- Socialize gradually. Introduce people, calm dogs, grooming equipment, vehicles, household noises, and veterinary handling at a pace the puppy can tolerate.
- House-train on a schedule. Small dogs have small bladders. Take the puppy out predictably, supervise closely, and reward outdoor elimination immediately.
Punishment is particularly unhelpful for a small, sensitive dog. Scolding accidents or forcing a frightened dog into an interaction can increase fear, defensive behavior, and resistance to handling. Consistency and supervision are more effective.
Children and other pets
A Chipoo can live successfully with children, but its small body can be injured by accidental drops, hugs, falls, or rough play. Babies and young children should never be left alone with any dog, regardless of the dog’s breed or temperament. Children should be taught not to chase, grab, corner, disturb, or handle the dog while it is eating or resting.
Use particular caution with toddlers and much larger dogs. A friendly large dog can injure a toy-sized companion during ordinary play. Provide escape areas where the Chipoo can rest undisturbed, and supervise every interaction.
Compatibility with cats and other dogs depends on the individual animals, their socialization, the introduction process, and the other pet’s size and play style. Do not assume that every Chipoo will be automatically friendly with all pets.

Coat care, shedding, and allergies
Grooming requirements depend mainly on the coat the dog inherits. A short, Chihuahua-like coat may need only occasional brushing and routine bathing. A dense, curly or Poodle-like coat needs more frequent brushing to prevent mats and may require professional trimming.

Check areas that tangle easily, including behind the ears, under the legs, around the collar or harness, and beneath the tail. Introduce brushing, nail care, ear handling, bathing, and clipping gradually while the dog is young.
Although both parent breeds are often described as relatively low-shedding compared with many dogs, a Chipoo is not guaranteed to shed little. Nor is it hypoallergenic. No dog has been proven completely hypoallergenic, and allergens can vary between individual animals. Anyone with allergies should spend time with the specific dog before committing rather than relying on the phrase “Poodle mix.”
Dental care is a priority
Small dogs commonly have more periodontal problems than large dogs. A Chipoo’s small mouth may develop crowded teeth, retained baby teeth, plaque, gingivitis, and periodontal disease.

Common Chipoo health concerns
These are inherited or parent-breed-associated risks, not diagnoses that every Chipoo will develop. A mixed breed can still inherit health problems from either side of its family.
| Concern | Signs to know |
|---|---|
| Patellar luxation | The kneecap slips out of its normal groove. Intermittent limping, a “bunny-hopping” gait, or a popping sound may occur. Severe cases can require surgery. |
| Tracheal collapse | A recurring honking cough may worsen with excitement, heat, exercise, eating, drinking, stress, or pressure on the neck. A harness is preferable to a neck collar for an affected dog. |
| Legg-Calvé-Perthes disease | Deterioration of the femoral head can cause pain, lameness, and reduced use of a hind leg. Surgery and rehabilitation may be necessary. |
| Dental and periodontal disease | Bad breath, red or bleeding gums, difficulty chewing, loose teeth, and facial sensitivity can indicate oral disease. |
| Eye disease | Inherited eye problems are one reason eye examinations are recommended for breeding Chihuahuas and Toy Poodles. |
| Cardiac disease | Breeding Chihuahuas are recommended for cardiac screening, including evaluation for early-onset degenerative mitral valve disease. |
| PRA-prcd | This inherited retinal disease is one reason the Toy Poodle parent should have the recommended PRA-prcd DNA test. |
| Obesity | Extra weight is easy to add through treats or inaccurate portions and can worsen stress on small joints. |
Contact a veterinarian promptly for breathing difficulty, collapse, repeated coughing, sudden lameness, severe pain, marked lethargy, or refusal to eat. Very small puppies can become seriously ill quickly if they are weak, vomiting, or not gaining weight.
How to choose a responsible Chipoo breeder
Because the Chipoo has no single breed-health testing protocol, examine the health screening for both parent breeds. Ask to see actual records rather than accepting “vet checked” as proof of inherited-disease screening.
For a Chihuahua parent, the Chihuahua Club of America’s CHIC requirements include:

For a Toy Poodle parent, the AKC lists these recommended national breed-club tests:
- Patella evaluation
- Ophthalmologist evaluation
- PRA-prcd DNA testing
A CHIC number confirms that required tests were performed and results entered into the database. It does not mean every result was normal, so inspect the individual results.
A responsible breeder should also let you see where puppies are raised, explain the parents’ health and temperament, provide veterinary and vaccination records, and answer questions without rushing you. Walk away from anyone who:

Feeding a Chipoo
Feed a complete and balanced diet appropriate for the dog’s life stage, body condition, activity, and health. Small-kibble formulas may be easier for a Chipoo with a small mouth, but the best food depends on the individual dog.
Use measured portions rather than leaving food available indefinitely, and count treats as part of the daily intake. A veterinarian can adjust the amount as the dog grows or if its body condition changes. Puppies at the smallest end of the size range need particular attention to regular meals, weight gain, and signs of illness.
Is a Chipoo right for you?
A Chipoo may be a good fit if you want a small companion and can provide daily interaction, reward-based training, enrichment, grooming suited to the coat, and consistent dental care. It can adapt to apartment living, but it is not a decorative or maintenance-free pet.
Think carefully if you need a dog with a predictable adult size, a guaranteed quiet temperament, minimal grooming, or dependable tolerance of rough handling. The mix’s Chihuahua and Poodle heritage can produce a clever and devoted dog, but the outcome is not fully predictable.

Is a Chipoo hypoallergenic?
No. Coat shedding varies, and no dog is scientifically guaranteed to be hypoallergenic. People with allergies should spend time with the specific dog before adopting or buying.
How long do Chipoos live?
There is no robust breed-specific lifespan dataset. Parent-breed figures suggest that many may live within the broad Chihuahua and Poodle ranges, approximately 10–18 years, but this is an estimate rather than a verified Chipoo average.
Are Chipoos good with children?
Some can live well with respectful older children, but their small bodies are vulnerable to accidental injury. Babies and young children must always be actively supervised around a Chipoo or any other dog.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Do Chipoos bark a lot?
Barking is possible, particularly because the Chihuahua side can be vigilant and vocal. Early socialization, reward-based training, and management can improve barking habits, but cannot guarantee a quiet dog.
Are Chipoos recognized by the AKC?
No. The Chipoo is a mixed breed and cannot receive full AKC purebred registration. It may be enrolled in AKC Canine Partners and participate in many AKC sports and title programs.
What health tests should Chipoo parents have?
Ask for documented screening for both parents. Chihuahua recommendations include cardiac, eye, and patella evaluations. Toy Poodle recommendations include patella and ophthalmologist evaluations plus a PRA-prcd DNA test. Review the actual results rather than relying on a CHIC number or a verbal claim.
The Bottom Line
The Chipoo can be a bright, affectionate small companion, but it is not a standardized or perfectly predictable breed. Expect variation in adult size, coat, shedding, barking, and temperament. Choose a puppy from health-tested parents, plan for daily enrichment and training, protect the dog around children and larger pets, and treat dental care as a routine necessity—not an optional extra.
