When you are unsure between two sizes, choose the larger one. Every KONG should be used under supervision and taken away once it is damaged.
Start with size and mouth fit
KONG sizes its rubber products by weight. Its selection guide, posted by Kendle Frank on January 2, 2026, gives these general ranges:
- XS: up to 5 lb
- S: up to 20 lb
- M: 5 to 35 lb
- L: 30 to 65 lb
- XL: 60 to 90 lb
- XXL: 85 lb and over
These ranges overlap at the edges, so weight alone does not settle the choice. The exact size chart on the product page you are buying is the controlling reference. The ranges above reflect KONG’s pages as checked on October 7, 2026, and charts can change.
How to check fit
- Weigh the dog now. For a puppy, use the current weight rather than the projected adult weight, and recheck the fit as the puppy grows.
- Find the matching weight band on the product’s chart. If the dog falls between two sizes, choose the larger one.
- Check the mouth. The largest ring should be bigger than the back of the dog’s mouth, so the dog can get the toy into its mouth without it being wedged there.
- For ball-style toys, the ball’s circumference should be larger than the dog’s jaw.
- If the dog is a power chewer, consider sizing up. KONG’s product listings say some power chewers may need a larger size of the Classic, or the Extreme formula.
KONG’s FAQ also notes that its Classic and Extreme snowman and bell-shaped products have a breed-based user guide in addition to the weight guide.

Multi-dog homes
If more than one dog shares the toys, size them all to the largest dog. KONG’s selection guide states the reason directly: “If you have a multi-dog household, size all your KONGs to the largest dog as a safety precaution.”
Match the formula to the chewer
KONG sells four rubber formulas. Each is aimed at a different kind of chewer or dog, as shown below.

The Extreme is the right move for a power chewer only when the size is right. A power chewer that tears through a Classic is a sign to size up or change formula, not to buy the same size again.
Choose by what the toy is for
Stuffing
The Classic and Extreme can both be stuffed. KONG’s Classic listing names kibble, KONG Snacks and Easy Treat as fillings, and its Extreme listing suggests treats. KONG Snacks and Easy Treat are the consumables it names as pairing options, so they are the natural choice if you want a ready-made filling.

Fetch
The Classic has an erratic bounce that KONG describes as suited to fetch. Its bounce is unpredictable, which keeps some dogs interested in chasing it.
Non-chew toys
KONG also sells interactive, plush and treat-dispensing products. Not every KONG is meant to be chewed, so check the listing before assuming a chew-grade rubber formula.

Supervision and when to retire a toy
KONG’s Classic and Extreme listings say the toys are for supervised use only, and to discontinue use if a toy is damaged. Its FAQ puts the broader point this way: “As always, we suggest supervising your dog with their KONG as no dog toy is indestructible!”
Inspect the toy regularly and take it away once it shows damage. The durability claims in this article are KONG’s own; no independent durability testing of these products is cited here.
