Cicadas are noisy and can appear in startling numbers, but they do not bite or sting, and ordinary sightings are not a danger to people or pets. The main reason to take action is to protect young or vulnerable trees from egg-laying females. In 2026, annual cicadas may still emerge in summer; the next major periodical broods listed by the U.S. Forest Service are Brood XXII in 2028 and Broods I and XXIII in 2029.

When is cicada season, and which cicadas are coming back?

There is no single nationwide cicada date. Emergence depends on the species or brood, location, soil temperature, and weather. In Maryland and other eastern locations, annual cicadas—often called dog-day cicadas—usually appear from June through August. They emerge every year, so their return does not mean a 13- or 17-year brood is due.

Periodical cicadas are Magicicada species that spend 13 or 17 years underground before emerging in synchronized broods. The U.S. Forest Service recognizes 15 periodical cicada broods. Its brood data list Brood XXII for 2028 and Broods I and XXIII for 2029; the precise timing and local presence can vary. The spectacular 2024 emergence of Broods XIII and XIX has passed. The National Park Service says those two broods are not expected to emerge together again until 2245.

Brood XIX, known as the Great Southern Brood, covers a broad area from the Southeast into parts of the Midwest. UConn records include Maryland, Georgia, Illinois, Missouri, Oklahoma, and neighboring states. A brood’s range does not mean cicadas will be equally abundant in every community within it.

Annual and periodical cicadas at a glance

Feature Annual cicadas Periodical cicadas
Emergence interval Some emerge every year. Magicicada emerge after 13 or 17 years underground.
Timing and abundance Usually appear in summer; numbers vary by place and year. Broods emerge in synchrony, sometimes in very large numbers.
Appearance Generally larger, often green or mottled. Magicicada are generally smaller and darker, with red eyes.
Noise and season Often associated with the summer “dog days”; males call. Also noisy; emergence timing depends on the brood and local conditions.
Tree-damage concern Egg-laying can injure small twigs, as with periodical cicadas. Large synchronized emergences can make protection of young trees more important.

Both kinds can be loud, and both can lay eggs in twigs. The greatest concern for tree injury is a heavy emergence near young or stressed trees, rather than the cicada label alone.

Are cicadas dangerous to people or pets?

No. Cicadas do not bite or sting and are not poisonous or venomous. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency says, “Cicadas are not harmful to humans, pets, household gardens, or crops.” The National Park Service likewise says they pose no danger to people or pets.

Can cicadas damage trees, flowers, or a garden?

Adult cicadas do not chew leaves, flowers, fruit, or garden produce. The main visible injury occurs when females cut slits into small twigs to lay eggs. Those twigs may brown, wilt, and break—a condition called flagging. Large, healthy trees generally tolerate this injury. Small, newly planted, transplanted, stressed, fruit, and ornamental trees are more vulnerable; during a heavy emergence, damage can severely stunt or kill a susceptible young tree.

After eggs hatch, young cicadas fall to the ground and burrow into the soil, where they feed on roots for years. Established trees usually tolerate this root feeding. The concern is therefore not that cicadas eat garden plants, but that egg-laying can injure small branches and that vulnerable trees face a greater risk during a heavy emergence.

How do you protect a young tree from cicadas?

For a young or vulnerable tree or shrub, use breathable fine-mesh insect netting with openings no larger than 1/4 inch. Tulle can work as a readily available material, according to the Morton Arboretum. Put the netting on before cicadas emerge and keep it in place for about 4–6 weeks while adults are present, as Penn State Extension advises.

  2. Check the mesh. Use fine mesh with openings no larger than 1/4 inch so cicadas cannot pass through.
  3. Install it before emergence. Enclose the canopy and secure the netting around the trunk or base so cicadas cannot climb inside. Keep the material breathable.
  4. Leave it in place while adults are present. Penn State Extension recommends about 4–6 weeks.
  5. Remove it and assess the tree. Once adults are gone, take off the netting. If twigs are flagged, remove damaged branches in line with local extension advice.

Should you spray cicadas?

Spraying is not the default solution for a homeowner protecting a few trees. The EPA says pesticides are generally ineffective because more cicadas continue arriving, and warns that pesticide use can expose people, pets, beneficial insects, and animals that eat cicadas. Penn State Extension says chemical control is almost never more effective than netting for a homeowner protecting a handful of trees.

For that situation, 1/4-inch fine-mesh insect netting is the more targeted approach. If you are considering a pesticide for a specific orchard or other setting, follow the product label and local extension or orchard guidance; do not assume a general insect spray is an appropriate cicada treatment.
