Clindamycin is a prescription antibiotic that veterinarians use in cats for certain bacterial infections, including specified skin wounds, abscesses and dental infections. It is also used off-label for clinical toxoplasmosis, a parasitic disease, where it may slow the parasite but usually does not eliminate it. The dose, schedule and length of treatment are set by the prescribing veterinarian for each cat, and the figures below are reference points from published labels and veterinary references, not instructions for giving the drug at home.
What clindamycin is used for in cats
Clindamycin belongs to the lincosamide class of antibiotics. Its use in cats falls into two groups that should be kept apart:
- Labeled bacterial infections. The U.S. label for Antirobe Aquadrops oral solution (Zoetis, revised September 2022) lists feline skin infections in the form of wounds and abscesses caused by specified susceptible staphylococci and streptococci, deep wounds and abscesses caused by specified organisms, and dental infections caused by specified susceptible organisms. The label does not cover every cause of a wound, abscess or dental problem. Whether clindamycin is the right choice depends on the organism involved, which is why cultures and clinical examination matter.
- Clinical toxoplasmosis (extra-label). Merck Veterinary Manual describes clindamycin as a treatment for cats with clinical toxoplasmosis. It can help while the parasite is actively multiplying, but it usually does not eradicate the infection. Use for toxoplasmosis is extra-label, meaning it falls outside the product label and follows separate veterinary protocols.
Dosage: why the numbers depend on the product and the reason for treatment
Dosing figures for clindamycin in cats differ by product, route and purpose. Putting them side by side shows why one cannot be applied to another.
| Reference | Use context | Dose and schedule | Duration |
|---|---|---|---|
| Zoetis Antirobe Aquadrops label (U.S., oral solution) | Labeled feline wound, abscess and dental indications | 11 to 33 mg/kg/day (5 to 15 mg/lb/day), depending on severity; given once every 24 hours | Up to 14 days when clinical judgment supports it |
| Merck Veterinary Manual, general lincosamide table | Dogs and cats; extra-label drug use | 10 to 15 mg/kg by oral, IV or SC route every 12 to 24 hours | Not stated in the general table |
| Merck Veterinary Manual, feline toxoplasmosis | Clinical toxoplasmosis; extra-label | 10 to 12.5 mg/kg orally every 12 hours | Four weeks |
The Aquadrops label states the recommended daily therapeutic range as “11 to 33 mg/kg/day (5 to 15 mg/lb/day) depending on the severity of the condition.” Within that range the veterinarian selects the amount. The label also says an acute infection should not be treated longer than three or four days without clinical response, so a cat that is not improving in that window should be re-examined rather than given more of the same course. Do not transfer the Aquadrops liquid regimen to another formulation, to toxoplasmosis, or to a different species.

Merck’s general table and its toxoplasmosis entry are reference protocols for veterinarians. They are not owner instructions, and they do not replace a diagnosis.
How long treatment lasts
For the labeled Aquadrops indications, the label permits treatment for up to 14 days when clinical judgment indicates. Toxoplasmosis protocols are longer, with Merck citing four weeks of oral dosing. Any cat that needs therapy for one month or longer also needs the monitoring described below. Stopping early because the cat looks better is a decision for the veterinarian, because incomplete courses can leave an infection partly treated.

- Used to treat a variety of susceptible bacterial infections in dogs and cats, as well as certain protozoal infections (e.g., toxoplasmosis).
- Avoid dry pilling, especially in small animals; always try to administer with a moist treat and/or a small amount of liquid.
- This medication should not be administered to certain species (e.g., horses, rabbits, guinea pigs, etc.), as harmful or fatal side effects may occur.
- May be prescribed for other animal species; please consult your veterinarian.
- While this drug does not have an FDA-approved indication for all animal uses, it is commonly accepted for veterinarians to prescribe this medication for use in animals.
Giving clindamycin safely
- Never give a dry tablet or capsule. VCA Animal Hospitals warns that a dry pill can damage the esophagus, and states: “It is important to never give a cat a dry pill, if using capsules or tablets, as it can damage the esophagus (esophagitis).” Merck describes esophagitis, ulceration and stricture when oral clindamycin is given without adequate food or water.
- Follow the product in hand. Liquid, capsule and tablet forms are not interchangeable. Ask the veterinarian or pharmacist which measuring device goes with the prescribed product. The Aquadrops label describes a calibrated dropper supplied with the oral solution.
- Keep the cat’s route and food instructions consistent. If the veterinarian asks for the medication to be given with food or water, do so each time.
Side effects to expect and watch for
The product label reports occasional vomiting and diarrhea. VCA lists these as gastrointestinal effects and notes that some cats drool or smack their lips after a dose. These effects are common enough to mention to the veterinarian at the start of treatment, but they are not a reason to change the dose on your own.
Call the veterinary practice promptly if the cat:
- has trouble swallowing or stops eating;
- develops bloody diarrhea;
- shows any other serious or unexpected reaction.
VCA identifies trouble swallowing or eating and bloody diarrhea as reasons for immediate contact. For a suspected overdose, contact the practice without waiting for symptoms to worsen. No overdose threshold is established in the references used for this article, so treat any accidental extra dose as a reason to call.

Liver, kidney and blood monitoring
The label advises periodic liver and kidney function tests and blood counts for therapy lasting one month or longer. It urges caution with very severe renal disease and with very severe hepatic disease accompanied by severe metabolic aberrations. Merck states that dose reduction should be considered in hepatic insufficiency. A cat with known liver or kidney disease needs a veterinary decision about whether clindamycin is appropriate and at what dose, rather than a dose based on weight alone.
Pregnancy and breeding
The label reports that safety has not been established in gestating queens or breeding male cats. This is a point to raise with the veterinarian before treatment begins, especially if the cat is pregnant or intended for breeding.

Clindamycin and toxoplasmosis
Toxoplasmosis requires veterinary diagnosis before any treatment, and clindamycin is not a cure. Merck’s feline protocol of 10 to 12.5 mg/kg orally every 12 hours for four weeks is a clinical reference for a veterinarian managing a confirmed case. Owners should not start clindamycin for suspected toxoplasmosis, and should not give leftover medication from a bacterial infection course for it.
Where to get reliable information
Product dosing information changes with label revisions. The Zoetis Antirobe Aquadrops label was revised in September 2022, so check the current package insert or ask the dispensing pharmacy for the version that matches the bottle. Merck Veterinary Manual’s entries for lincosamides and toxoplasmosis, reviewed in 2026, are useful background for veterinarians and informed owners. VCA Animal Hospitals’ clindamycin medication guide covers the administration and safety points above in owner language.
