The City of Cockburn said the beaches reopened on 10 January after closing overnight as a precaution. The Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development (DPIRD) later identified an unintended commercial fishing-net failure as the likely cause and said its investigation found nothing of concern in test results.
What happened near Coogee Beach and the Omeo Wreck?
On 9 January 2025, DPIRD began investigating reports of possibly several hundred scaly mackerel floating between the Woodman Point Ammo Jetty and the Omeo Wreck. Onshore winds were carrying fish toward Coogee Beach. The initial figure was an estimate of fish seen offshore, not an independently confirmed total mortality count.

The City of Cockburn reported that a cleanup contractor removed approximately one bucket of fish from the Coogee stretch. At C.Y. O’Connor Beach, the City reported that 200–300 fish had washed ashore; that beach was temporarily closed during cleanup. Those are separate observations at different locations and should not be added together as a single count.

When did the beaches reopen?
The City said beaches between the Ammo Jetty at Woodman Point and the Omeo Wreck were closed overnight as a precaution and reopened on 10 January 2025. What caused the fish deaths?
Following enquiries, DPIRD said on 10 January that the fish washed up in the Coogee area were “likely due to an unintended failure of a commercial fish net.” That was the department’s likely-cause explanation, not a finding that the wreck or pollution caused the deaths.
On 4 February 2025, DPIRD said its investigation had concluded with test results showing nothing of concern, while noting it would continue to monitor the situation. This is the department’s reported result for that incident; it does not establish current water conditions or rule on unrelated events.

What should people and pet owners do around a fish kill?
During this incident, DPIRD advised people to take precautions around large numbers of dead or decomposing fish. Its notice cautioned against swimming where large numbers were present because of possible high bacterial levels and unpleasant odour. It also advised against fishing in affected areas, temporarily collecting or eating fish from nearby waters, or using dead fish as bait or food.
- Keep dogs and other pets away from dead or decomposing fish in the water and on shore.
- Do not handle or take dead fish for food or bait.
- Report a fish kill promptly to FishWatch so responders have a better chance of collecting fresh samples.
These were precautions for the fish-kill situation, not a continuing warning that Coogee is unsafe. Follow any current local or health-authority notice for present-day conditions.

Why is the Omeo Wreck a local landmark?
The Western Australian Museum records the Omeo as a ship driven ashore at Coogee in 1905. The mostly submerged wreck lies about 40 metres off Coogee Beach in roughly 2–4 metres of water. The City describes the Coogee Maritime Trail as a snorkelling and diving route centred on the wreck; most of the underwater route is about 2.5–5 metres deep, reaching 7 metres at its western extent.
The City advises trail visitors to check weather, wind and currents, use a flotation aid if helpful, and avoid climbing, standing or resting on the wreck. Fishing and boating are prohibited in the trail area. The wreck’s proximity explains its prominence in local beach reports, but does not establish any connection between the wreck and the fish deaths.

What concerns did community advocates raise?
The Conservation Council of WA separately called for improved warning and emergency-response procedures. It said people had been observed swimming and fishing while closure signs were present; those observations and the call for a review are the council’s advocacy, not findings of DPIRD’s investigation. The council also raised concerns about submarines and radioactive-waste storage, but the incident findings do not establish a link between those issues and the fish kill.
