A Corgi Chihuahua mix, usually called a Chigi, combines two very different dogs: the working-bred Pembroke Welsh Corgi and the much smaller Chihuahua. The result can be bright, affectionate, energetic, vocal, wary of strangers, and surprisingly strong-willed—but there is no official Chigi breed standard to predict exactly how an individual dog will turn out.
Before choosing one, look beyond the cute short-legged appearance. Parentage, adult structure, socialization, health testing, barking, housetraining, and the dog’s ability to live safely around children all matter more than the mix’s name.

What is a Corgi Chihuahua mix?
A Corgi Chihuahua mix is a mixed-breed dog produced from a Corgi and a Chihuahua. Chigi is the most common informal name, although you may also see “Chorgi,” “Chi-Corgi,” or “Cohuahua.” None of these names describes an AKC-recognized breed with a fixed standard.

“Corgi” itself can mean either of two separate breeds: the Pembroke Welsh Corgi or the Cardigan Welsh Corgi. Most Chigi descriptions assume a Pembroke, but an advertised Corgi mix could involve a Cardigan or even a dog with unidentified Corgi-type ancestry. A pedigree, breeder records, or DNA ancestry test may help establish parentage, although a DNA test cannot predict the dog’s complete medical future.

How big does a Chigi get?
Many Chigis are small dogs, but adult size is unpredictable. There is no reliable, registry-backed Chigi size range. The result depends on which Corgi is involved, the size and sex of both parents, whether the dog is a first-generation cross, and ordinary genetic variation.
For comparison, an AKC Pembroke Welsh Corgi is approximately 10–12 inches tall, with a maximum standard weight of 30 pounds for dogs and 28 pounds for bitches. The AKC Chihuahua standard specifies a weight of no more than 6 pounds but does not set a height requirement. Those parent standards do not create a dependable size standard for their mixed offspring.
| Question | Accurate answer |
|---|---|
| Will every Chigi weigh 10–20 pounds? | No. That is an informal estimate sometimes published online, not a breed requirement. |
| Can you predict adult size from the puppy? | Only approximately. Parent size and the puppy’s growth provide clues, not certainty. |
| Will a Chigi always have very short legs? | No. Leg length and body proportions vary with inheritance. |
Ask to see both parents whenever possible. A breeder who cannot show the parents, provide their health records, or explain the dog’s ancestry gives you less information with which to estimate adult size and structure.

Appearance and coat
A Chigi may inherit upright ears, a compact body, short legs, or a longer, lower profile. Some resemble small Corgis, while others look more like large Chihuahuas with heavier bodies. Coat texture and density are equally variable.
- Coat: smooth, medium, or somewhat long; single or thicker double coat.
- Colors: red, sable, fawn, black-and-tan, cream, white, or combinations of these.
- Ears: often upright, although the final shape is not guaranteed.
- Body: may be compact or noticeably long-backed and short-legged.
The Pembroke has a weather-resistant double coat and sheds substantially, especially during seasonal shedding. Chihuahuas may have smooth or long coats, so a Chigi is not reliably low-shedding. Nor is it hypoallergenic. No dog is completely hypoallergenic; allergens primarily come from substances such as dander and saliva rather than from visible hair alone.
Chigi temperament
Temperament depends on the individual dog, its inherited traits, early experiences, and training. A Chigi may be affectionate and playful, but the combination can also produce a dog that is alert, vocal, independent, reactive, or reserved with unfamiliar people.
Pembrokes were developed as cattle-herding dogs. They are intelligent, active, alert, affectionate, and responsive to training, but may bark, become bored without enough activity, or nip at heels during play. Chihuahuas may be devoted and lively, yet they can be bold, timid, stubborn, wary of strangers, or intensely attached to one person or family.

Good socialization helps a puppy learn that ordinary people, dogs, handling, noises, and places are safe; it does not guarantee a naturally outgoing adult. Evaluate the puppy’s behavior, the parents’ behavior, and the breeder’s socialization practices together.

Exercise and mental stimulation
A Chigi should not automatically be treated as a sedentary lapdog. Both parent breeds can be active and alert, and the Pembroke was bred for work. Suitable activities include:
- daily walks adjusted to age, fitness, weather, and body structure;
- sniffing and exploring on safe routes;
- short play sessions;
- food puzzles and scatter feeding;
- trick training, obedience exercises, scent work, or rally-style games.
More exercise is not always better. Puppies should not routinely jump from furniture, race up and down stairs, leap repeatedly, or perform high-impact stop-start activities while growing. If a Chigi has a long back and short legs, use ramps or steps designed for dogs where appropriate and discourage repeated jumping off sofas and beds.
Contact a veterinarian promptly if the dog develops back pain, weakness, wobbling, reluctance to move, dragging of the hind legs, or a sudden change in coordination.

Training and housetraining
Use reward-based training: mark and reward the behavior you want, keep sessions short, and prevent opportunities to rehearse unwanted behavior. Both parent breeds can learn quickly but may also show an independent streak. Force-based methods can increase fear and defensive behavior and are not a good shortcut for barking, nipping, or toileting problems.
A practical starting routine
- Begin basic cues such as name response, recall, sit, hand target, and “leave it” as soon as the puppy settles in.
- Take the puppy outside frequently, especially after waking, eating, drinking, playing, and sleeping.
- Reward outdoor elimination immediately rather than waiting until returning indoors.
- Use a safe crate or pen for management, never as punishment.
- Introduce people, surfaces, sounds, car travel, grooming, and calm handling gradually and positively.
- Enroll in a well-run puppy class after discussing vaccination and disease-exposure precautions with your veterinarian.
Housetraining may take longer than owners expect in a Chihuahua-influenced dog. Small dogs produce small amounts of urine and may be harder to notice when they need to go. A predictable schedule and close supervision are more dependable than punishment after an accident.
Grooming and shedding
Grooming needs depend on the coat the dog inherits:
| Coat type | Likely care |
|---|---|
| Smooth and relatively short | Weekly brushing may be sufficient, with extra brushing during shedding. |
| Longer or denser | Brush more often to remove loose hair and prevent tangles. |
| Thick, Corgi-like double coat | Expect substantial shedding; daily brushing can be useful during seasonal coat changes. |
Trim the nails regularly, check the ears, and brush the teeth with dog-specific toothpaste. Dental care deserves particular attention because Chihuahua-type dogs are prone to periodontal problems. A small mouth crowded with teeth can develop plaque and gum disease quickly, so ask your veterinarian how often the dog needs professional dental assessment.

A mixed-breed dog is not automatically healthier—or less healthy—than a purebred dog. A Chigi can inherit conditions associated with either parent, and the actual risk depends on its ancestry, conformation, genes, body condition, and preventive care.

Concerns associated with Chihuahuas
- patellar luxation;
- cardiac disease, including patent ductus arteriosus and mitral valve disease;
- eye disease;
- idiopathic epilepsy;
- periodontal and dental disease;
- hypoglycemia risk in very small puppies that do not eat adequately.
The Chihuahua Club of America recommends patella, cardiac, and ophthalmologist evaluations for breeding dogs.
Concerns associated with Pembroke Welsh Corgis
- hip dysplasia;
- eye disorders;
- von Willebrand disease;
- elbow dysplasia;
- cardiac disease;
- degenerative myelopathy.
The AKC currently lists hip and ophthalmologist evaluations among its recommended Pembroke health tests. Pembrokes are chondrodysplastic, meaning their short-legged structure results from a form of skeletal dwarfism. If a Chigi inherits a long-and-low build, maintaining a lean body condition and limiting high-impact jumping become especially important.
Degenerative myelopathy requires careful interpretation. A positive SOD1 result indicates a genetic risk factor; it does not prove that a dog will develop clinical disease. In Pembrokes, the SOD1 result alone is considered a poor predictor of clinical disease and is not a diagnosis.

For a deliberately bred litter, request documented results rather than verbal assurances. Ask for:
- patella, cardiac, and ophthalmologist evaluations for the Chihuahua parent;
- hip and ophthalmologist evaluations for the Pembroke parent;
- additional genetic testing recommended for the particular lines;
- registered names or identification numbers so results can be checked in the OFA database;
- the parents’ ages, veterinary histories, and known causes of death in close relatives;
- any history of orthopedic, neurologic, cardiac, eye, dental, or reproductive problems;
- a written contract covering the veterinary examination, return provisions, and what happens if you can no longer keep the dog.
A CHIC number is not a certificate that a dog passed every test. It indicates that required tests were completed and made public; it does not guarantee normal results or guarantee that the dog is free of inherited disease.
Be cautious if a seller claims that the mix guarantees “hybrid vigor,” is automatically healthier, or needs no health testing. Mixed ancestry does not remove disease-associated variants.
Food, weight, and lifespan
Feed a complete and balanced diet appropriate for the dog’s life stage. Measure meals, count treats, and have your veterinarian assess body condition rather than relying only on the number on a scale. Both parent breeds can gain excess weight, and unnecessary weight is particularly hard on a short-legged, long-backed dog. A fixed calorie recommendation is inappropriate without knowing the dog’s age, weight, activity, reproductive status, and health.
There is no well-established Chigi-specific lifespan figure. A healthy individual may live into its teens, but genetics, dental care, body condition, veterinary care, and inherited disease history all influence longevity. The AKC commonly gives Chihuahuas an approximate lifespan of 15–17 years, while the Pembroke Welsh Corgi Club of America states that Pembrokes typically live 12–15 years. These parent estimates should not be presented as a promise for their mixed offspring.

Are Chigis good with children and other pets?
Some Chigis live successfully with children and other animals; others are uncomfortable with rough handling, unfamiliar dogs, or fast-moving play. The mix label cannot guarantee compatibility.
Chihuahuas are physically fragile because of their small size, while Pembrokes may nip at heels during herding-style play. Every interaction between a dog and a young child should be supervised. Teach children not to climb on, grab, chase, or disturb the dog while it is eating or sleeping. The dog should always have a quiet retreat that children cannot enter.
Introduce other pets gradually, use gates and leashes where necessary, and do not leave a small dog alone with a larger dog until their behavior has been reliably assessed.
Is a Chigi suitable for apartment living?
Possibly, but small size is not enough to answer the question. A Chigi can live in an apartment if its exercise, mental stimulation, toileting, and barking needs are managed. Neighbors may object to repeated alert barking, and a home without easy access to a safe toilet area can make housetraining harder.
Before adopting, consider whether you can provide daily walks, training, enrichment, safe rest areas, and veterinary care. A house with a yard is not automatically a better fit if the dog is left outside without interaction or activity.
AKC recognition and activities
The Chigi is not eligible for AKC conformation competition as a recognized breed. An owner may enroll a mixed-breed dog in the AKC Canine Partners program. Adult dogs must be spayed or neutered, and enrollment is not the same as full AKC registration.
Canine Partners dogs may participate in activities such as agility, obedience, rally, tracking, scent work, Fast CAT, coursing ability tests, and AKC Family Dog programs. They are excluded from certain breed-specific events, including conformation, herding, hunt tests, and earthdog.

How much does a Chigi weigh?
There is no official Chigi weight range. Many are small, but adult size depends on the Corgi type, parent size, ancestry, sex, and individual genetics. Evaluate the parents and the individual dog rather than trusting a guaranteed advertised range.
Do Chigis shed?
They may shed moderately or heavily. A Corgi-influenced Chigi can inherit a dense double coat and substantial seasonal shedding, while another may have a smoother or longer Chihuahua-type coat.
Is a Chigi hypoallergenic?
No. No dog, including a mixed-breed dog, is completely hypoallergenic. Chigis can still release dander and saliva proteins that trigger allergies.

They can learn quickly, but independence, barking, nipping, and housetraining difficulties are possible. Reward-based training, frequent toilet breaks, early socialization, and consistent management are important.
How long do Chigis live?
There is no reliable mix-specific lifespan. A healthy Chigi may live into its teens, but genetics, body condition, dental care, veterinary care, and inherited disease have a major influence.
Are Chigis good family dogs?
Some are, but suitability depends on the individual dog and the family. Young children must be supervised because a Chihuahua-sized dog can be injured by rough handling, and a Corgi-influenced dog may nip at heels during play.
The Bottom Line
The bottom line
A Chigi can be a lively, affectionate companion with an engaging mix of intelligence and personality. It can also be vocal, stubborn, difficult to housetrain, heavy-shedding, or physically vulnerable if it inherits a long-backed, short-legged structure. There is no reliable blueprint for the cross.
Choose the individual dog carefully. Confirm which Corgi type is involved, meet the parents, verify health testing, watch the puppy’s behavior, plan for dental care and weight control, and be ready to provide both daily activity and reward-based training.
