Costa Rica is one of the world’s most practical birding destinations: a relatively compact country combines rain forest, cloud forest, mangroves, beaches, rivers, and dry forest, allowing a trip to sample several bird communities without crossing a continent. The Costa Rica Tourism Board describes almost 900 bird species and says the country contains about 6% of Earth’s biodiversity. A January 2026 Birding Ecotours overview lists 936 species, but that figure is a provider’s checklist count rather than a definitive national total. Plan around the habitats and birds you want, then verify current weather, entry rules, opening hours, permits, and guide credentials before departure.
Why Costa Rica works so well for birders
The country’s appeal is ecological variety in a small area. Elevation rises from coastal lowlands to volcanic and mountain ranges, while both Pacific and Caribbean coastlines create different rainfall patterns. Forest edges, rivers, wetlands, agricultural landscapes, and protected reserves add still more niches. As the Tourism Board explains, ecosystems can occur close together, so a carefully chosen route can produce a broad species list without changing countries or making every day a long transfer.

That convenience does not mean every destination is interchangeable. A cloud-forest trip is designed around different birds, temperatures, trails, and access conditions than a lowland rainforest or dry-forest trip. Your first decision should therefore be habitat and target species, not a generic “best place.”

| Bird zone | What it represents | Planning questions |
|---|---|---|
| Tropical Dry Forest | Seasonally dry habitats and associated coastal or inland landscapes | How much shade, heat, and dry-season dust can you manage? Which dry-forest species are priorities? |
| Highlands | Mountain and cloud-forest environments | Are you prepared for cool, wet conditions, steep or uneven trails, and elevation-related exertion? |
| Caribbean Tropical Rainforest | Humid Caribbean lowland forest and adjoining habitats | What is the local rain outlook, and how will you handle muddy trails or slippery surfaces? |
| South Pacific Tropical Rainforest | Wet forest and coastal ecosystems in the south Pacific | Which lowland or coastal birds justify the travel time and required transport? |
Use the route’s 12 nodes to generate options, then compare each candidate by habitat, target birds, seasonal weather, access, trail difficulty, and availability of a permitted local guide. A node with fewer famous species may be the better choice if it matches your dates, mobility, and transport plan.
Where to look for particular birds
Resplendent quetzal
The Tourism Board identifies cloud forests in Monteverde, Los Santos, and the Central Volcanic Mountain Range as places associated with the resplendent quetzal. These are not interchangeable guarantees of a sighting. Elevation, forest condition, fruiting trees, weather, timing, and local knowledge all influence what you see. Ask a current, permitted guide which access points are operating and what conditions are expected when you travel.
Scarlet macaw
The same official material points to the Osa Peninsula and the area around Carara Biological Reserve for scarlet macaw viewing. Lowland heat, sun exposure, and early-morning activity patterns make clothing, water, and start times important. Confirm reserve hours and entrance arrangements rather than assuming that a remembered schedule still applies.
Building a broader list
If you do not have one flagship target, combine contrasting habitats. For example, a highland segment can be paired with a dry-forest or Pacific lowland segment, while Caribbean rainforest adds another ecological community. Keep the itinerary realistic: every additional region introduces transport, weather, and check-in variables that can reduce actual time in the field.

When is the best time to go birding?
The Tourism Board’s national overview describes a dry season from roughly mid-December through late April and a green, or wet, season from May through mid-December. This is a countrywide frame, not a destination-specific forecast. The Pacific generally has more clearly defined dry and green seasons, while the Caribbean has a longer rainy period. Elevation, distance from the coast, and local ecology create microclimates that can differ sharply from the national pattern.
Dry-season trade-offs
More predictable conditions can simplify road travel, trail use, and outdoor scheduling, especially in Pacific areas. Demand may also be higher, and dry landscapes can look and function differently from the lush conditions many visitors imagine. Do not treat “dry” as rain-free everywhere.
Green-season trade-offs
Rain can make trails muddy and cause short-notice changes to access or transport. It can also alter bird activity and produce vivid vegetation. A wet-season plan needs flexible days, quick-drying clothing, waterproof protection for optics, and a current local forecast.

How to use the forecast
Check the forecast and operating conditions for each specific area shortly before travel. Ask lodging staff, reserves, or guides about trail closures, river levels, road conditions, and the best daily observation window. A national seasonal label should never replace a local check.

Entry requirements: verify them for your passport
Entry rules depend on nationality and personal circumstances. The current Costa Rica Tourism Board guidance lists these general requirements:
- A valid passport or other accepted travel document.
- A visa when your nationality or circumstances require one.
- Proof of sufficient economic means. The Tourism Board specifies US$100 per month, or partial month, of legal stay.
- Return or onward travel evidence.
- No immigration impediment or other disqualifying condition.
The immigration officer determines the permitted stay, and the duration varies by visitor group. Do not rely on a universal “visa-free” claim or an assumed number of days. Check current immigration and consular instructions for your nationality before booking nonrefundable travel, and carry documentary evidence in an accessible format.
Protected areas: access and wildlife etiquette
SINAC, Costa Rica’s National System of Conservation Areas, describes protected areas as places for birdwatching, trails, and other tourism activities. It also reports that 25% of the country’s national territory has a protected-area category. That status protects habitat but does not mean every trail, entrance, or service is open every day.

- Check the official area information for opening hours, payment methods, entrances, weather alerts, and available services.
- Confirm whether advance reservations, an entrance slot, a permit, or a local guide is required.
- Pack suitable clothing, enough water, sun and rain protection, and any medication you may need during the outing.
- Ask your guide or operator to show current ICT certification or the permits required for the activity, where applicable.
While you are inside
- Enter only through official access points and remain in visitor-designated areas.
- Follow ranger instructions, closure notices, and photography restrictions.
- Never touch, handle, feed, bait, or chase wildlife. Keep a respectful distance and do not play calls so loudly or persistently that birds are disturbed.
- Keep food and litter secured, and leave plants, feathers, nests, and other natural objects where you find them.
Rafael Gutierrez Rojas, Executive Director of SINAC, describes responsible and safe tourism in protected wildlife areas as a shared responsibility among government, the private sector, academia, communities, and tourists. In practice, that means your choices affect both safety and conservation outcomes.

Choosing lodging, guides, and tours
Compare options using factors that change the quality of time in the field, not just a room description or species promise.
| Decision factor | What to confirm |
|---|---|
| Location | Distance and practical access to the habitat you intend to bird; road conditions and transfer arrangements |
| Guiding | Whether a knowledgeable local guide is included, optional, or unavailable; language and group size |
| Logistics | Transport, meals, early breakfasts, packed lunches, entrance fees, and equipment supplied |
| Physical demand | Elevation, trail surface, gradients, heat, humidity, and expected walking hours |
| Flexibility | Weather-related changes, cancellation terms, and what happens if an access point closes |
| Credentials | Current ICT certification or permits where required, plus Costa Rica’s CST sustainability certification status when relevant |
The Tourism Board describes its Certification for Sustainable Tourism (CST) program for lodging and tour operators and identifies BASIC and ELITE levels. Certification can help you identify providers with a formal sustainability framework; it does not guarantee a particular wildlife sighting, guide quality, or service outcome. Verify the current status directly with the provider or official program information.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.A practical planning sequence
- Set your targets. Decide whether the priority is a cloud-forest specialist such as the resplendent quetzal, a lowland macaw, a broad photographic list, or simply varied habitats.
- Choose two or more compatible habitats. Use the four-zone route as a map of possibilities, then remove locations that create impractical transfers for your available days.
- Match dates to local conditions. Start with the national dry/green-season pattern, then check the specific coast, elevation, and forecast for each stop.
- Audit access. Confirm official hours, entrance procedures, permits, guide requirements, and current road or trail conditions.
- Book the right support. Compare lodging and tours by habitat access, guiding, transport, meals, physical demands, flexibility, and current credentials.
- Prepare for field conditions. Pack layered, quick-drying clothing; rain protection; sturdy footwear; water; medication; sun protection; and secure protection for binoculars, cameras, and phones.
- Recheck immediately before departure. Reconfirm entry rules, permitted stay, weather, opening status, payments, and any conservation-area notices.
Field equipment and conduct that improve the experience
A lightweight pair of binoculars, a field guide covering Costa Rican birds, and a way to record date, habitat, and location are sufficient for most travelers. A physical field guide is useful when connectivity is unreliable; choose a current edition appropriate to Central American species. A camera with a long lens is optional, not a substitute for distance and patience.
Wear colors and fabrics suited to the habitat rather than treating camouflage as a license to approach wildlife. Keep voices low, move slowly, and let birds determine the distance. Share sightings without crowding a perch or blocking a trail. If a guide advises stopping playback or moving away, follow that direction immediately.

Common planning mistakes and fixes
Assuming one national weather forecast applies everywhere
Fix: Check the microclimate and operating conditions for each altitude and coast, then retain a flexible day in the schedule.
Choosing a famous destination without matching the target
Fix: Start with habitat and species goals, then compare route nodes by access, trails, season, and guide availability.
Arriving at a reserve without checking entry procedures
Fix: Confirm hours, payment, entrance, reservations, and permits through official information before setting out.

Fix: Treat “almost 900” from the Tourism Board and the 936 species reported in the January 2026 Birding Ecotours overview as context, not a promise of what one itinerary will produce.
Overlooking physical demands
Fix: Ask specifically about elevation, gradients, humidity, trail surfaces, early starts, and transport between sites, then choose a pace your group can sustain.
What a responsible trip looks like
Responsible birding is more than leaving no litter. It means using legal access, supporting permitted guides and local communities, respecting closures, and selecting lodging or operators that can explain their current sustainability practices. It also means accepting that a missed bird is preferable to a disturbed bird. Costa Rica’s protected landscapes remain productive when visitors stay within designated areas and let conservation rules set the limits of the experience.
