A seal was filmed wrestling with an unidentified animal inside Cottesloe Beach’s swimming enclosure, near a swimmer. PerthNow reported the encounter on 10 December 2025, but the animal was not clearly identifiable in the footage; “stingray” was the uploader’s description, not a confirmed identification.
What does the Cottesloe video show?
PerthNow’s report by Amy Cavender says the footage shared by Harry Reiffer shows a seal surfacing, jumping inside the enclosure and wrestling with another creature near swimmers and a pylon. The report says the creature “isn’t clearly identifiable.” Reiffer’s caption described it as a stingray, but the report does not independently verify that identification or establish that the animal was killed or eaten. Can marine animals enter the Cottesloe enclosure?
The Town of Cottesloe describes the area as a protected swimming enclosure, but its beach guidance does not say the enclosure excludes seals or every other marine animal. The seal footage itself shows an animal inside it. The Town lists beach patrols and shark warning systems among local safety measures and advises beachgoers to follow signage and stay out of the water when a beach is closed. These measures should not be read as a guarantee against wildlife encounters. Town of Cottesloe beach guidance
How this differs from the earlier shark sighting
PerthNow also reported a separate bronze whaler sighting inside the enclosure in January 2025, citing Surf Life Saving WA. That shark was reported as 1.5 metres long and about 60 metres offshore. Those measurements concern the earlier shark sighting, not the seal footage, and do not establish the enclosure’s effectiveness or the risk in this encounter.
