Cottesloe Beach was closed on 8 January 2025 after a 1.5-metre bronze whaler was spotted about 60 metres offshore, inside the seasonal shark barrier, ABC News reported. That is a past incident, not confirmation that the beach is closed now. For current conditions, follow local closure signs and check official alerts before entering the water.

What happened at Cottesloe Beach?

ABC News reported that swimmers were directed out of the water at about 7:30 am on 8 January 2025 after a bronze whaler was seen inside the barrier. The Town of Cottesloe kept the affected beaches closed for the rest of that day. The reported closure area ran from south of the Cottesloe groyne to North Cottesloe.

The same ABC report said the shark remained inside the enclosure that afternoon. It also reported that the Department of Primary Industries was investigating reports that the shark had been injured by a speargun; that was an allegation under investigation, not an established finding. ABC News coverage, 8 January 2025.

Why the undated headline can be confusing

There have been multiple shark-related Cottesloe reports, so an undated headline does not identify one event with certainty. The 8 January 2025 account concerned a 1.5-metre bronze whaler inside the barrier. A separate PerthNow report on 20 March 2025 described a two-metre shark about 100 metres offshore. Those are distinct reports; their details should not be combined.

Is Cottesloe Beach closed now?

A past news report cannot establish today’s beach status. Check the Town of Cottesloe’s current beach information and posted signs at the location, and consult the WA Government’s SharkSmart alerts for reported shark activity. The Town’s guidance says to obey signage and not enter the water when a beach is closed because of a shark sighting or incident. Alerts provide useful context, but they do not replace an active local closure instruction.

The Town identifies warning systems at Cove surf break and North Cottesloe, as well as Beach Emergency Number signs, a protected swimming enclosure and patrols. Conditions and closures can change, so check the information available at the beach as well as online.

What the shark barrier does—and does not—mean

ABC News reported that the seasonal barrier involved in the January 2025 incident extended 140 metres from shore and 170 metres from the groyne; it had been replaced in November 2024 and is removed in winter. These are details reported for that barrier at that time, not verified current specifications.

The January sighting occurred inside the enclosure, showing why the barrier should not be treated as permission to swim during a closure. As Town of Cottesloe CEO Matthew Scott told ABC News, “It’s the first time it’s happened in the five years Cottesloe has had a shark barrier.” A beachgoer quoted in the same report said the incident made her realise “even the net isn’t a guarantee of safety”; that is her view, not a technical assessment of the barrier.
