On 8 January 2025, lifesavers cleared swimmers from the Cottesloe Beach enclosure after a reported 1.5-metre bronze whaler was seen circling about 60 metres offshore. They warned people over a loudspeaker, briefly sounded a siren when one swimmer did not hear the warning, and sent up a drone to monitor the area. The available incident reports do not state when the enclosure reopened.

What happened at Cottesloe Beach?

PerthNow reported that a Surf Life Saving WA alert placed the sighting at 07:41 on Wednesday, 8 January 2025. The alert described a 1.5-metre bronze whaler circling 60 metres offshore at the Cottesloe Beach enclosure. Lifesavers told swimmers to leave using a loudspeaker; when one swimmer missed the warning, they briefly sounded a siren. A drone was also sent up to watch the area. PerthNow’s report attributes those details to the Surf Life Saving WA alert.

Was the shark inside the Cottesloe shark barrier?

ABC News reported that the shark was seen inside the barrier. The Surf Life Saving WA alert quoted by PerthNow instead described its position as 60 metres offshore at the enclosure. Neither account says that the barrier failed or was breached, so those conclusions should not be drawn from the sighting alone.

When did the enclosure reopen?

The incident reports do not give a precise reopening time for the 8 January 2025 sighting. A separate Town of Cottesloe update concerns a later event and does not establish when the enclosure reopened in January 2025.

A separate September 2026 sighting

On 23 September 2026, the Town of Cottesloe reported a roughly four-metre shark about 50 metres offshore at North Cottesloe. The Town said North Cottesloe and The Cove were closed, alarms were sounded, and a helicopter circled the area. Its update said both beaches reopened at 10:40 after no further sightings. This was a separate incident, not the January 2025 enclosure sighting. The Town’s update records that event.

What to do if you see a shark

Surf Life Saving WA advises checking alerts before swimming, staying close to shore and between the flags at patrolled beaches, avoiding dawn and dusk activity, and swimming with others. If you see a shark, leave the water quickly and calmly, without excessive splashing or noise. If a beach is closed, follow the closure direction rather than relying on general swimming advice. Surf Life Saving WA’s shark-safety guidance explains these precautions.
