Cottesloe’s replacement shark barrier installation began on 1 November 2024, days after PerthNow reported a tagged great white shark detection off the beach and the evacuation of swimmers. The timing was fortuitous, but the available reports do not show that the sighting prompted the already-seasonal installation.
What happened in November 2024?
The Town of Cottesloe announced on 1 November 2024 that installation of a replacement barrier was beginning. The previous enclosure had reached the end of its useful life. The Town said the state Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development (DPIRD) provided a $400,000 grant, and that the council awarded Eco Shark Barrier the contract to supply, install and maintain the replacement after a tender process. The Town said the new enclosure would occupy the same position and have the same dimensions as the old one. Town of Cottesloe announcement, 1 November 2024.

PerthNow reported that rolls of netting were on the beach and divers began securing the barrier in a day-long effort. Its 7 November report said a tagged great white had been detected off Cottesloe a few days earlier. Lifeguards were alerted at about 8:45 a.m. on Wednesday, and swimmers were evacuated from Cottesloe and North Cottesloe beaches. The Town’s announcement confirms the installation, but does not detail that detection or evacuation. PerthNow, 7 November 2024.
The Town says seasonal installation typically starts around the end of October. The reports therefore establish close timing, not a causal link: they do not say the shark detection triggered the replacement project.

How large is the Cottesloe shark barrier?
The Town describes the enclosure as extending 170 metres north along the coast from the groyne and 140 metres out from shore. It is made of flexible nylon designed to move with the water. PerthNow reported the barrier’s total length as 310 metres. These figures describe different measurements: the Town gives the two dimensions of the enclosure, while the news report gives a reported total barrier length. Town of Cottesloe project description.
What did the replacement cost, and who maintains it?
The Town’s announcement identifies a $400,000 DPIRD grant for the replacement and says Eco Shark Barrier received the supply, installation and maintenance contract. PerthNow separately reported that the contractor received a further five-year contract and that ongoing maintenance was estimated at $120,000 per year. The annual figure is a media-reported estimate, not an amount specified in the Town’s announcement.

Is the barrier installed year-round?
No. The Town describes the enclosure as seasonal, typically installed around late October and removed around late April. The actual installation date can depend on sea and weather conditions. On 30 September 2026, PerthNow reported that installation for the 2026 season was scheduled for 7 October, with weather, swell, tides and seaweed among the considerations. ABC News reported on 3 October that installation was expected early the following Wednesday, subject to conditions. Those were plans, not confirmation that the barrier had been installed by 4 October 2026. PerthNow, 30 September 2026; ABC News, 3 October 2026.
Does the barrier mean swimming is safe from sharks?
The Town presents the enclosure as one part of a broader set of shark-prevention and response measures, alongside beach patrols, Shark Warning Systems at the Cove surf break and North Cottesloe, and beach emergency number signs. Its information does not provide a tested efficacy rate or a quantified reduction in encounters or injuries. The barrier should be understood as a mitigation measure, not a guarantee that sharks cannot enter or that swimming is risk-free. Town of Cottesloe beach and shark-safety information.

Follow official closures and warnings even when the enclosure is in place. The Town tells beach users to obey signs and stay out of the water when a beach is closed because of a shark sighting or incident. It directs people to SharkSmart for safety guidance and real-time sighting and tagged-shark detection reports. Check the Town and SharkSmart immediately before visiting; a dated news report cannot confirm whether a beach is open now.

ABC News reported increased shark sightings in the region after a whale carcass washed ashore at City Beach, with some nearby beaches closed. At the time of that report, Cottesloe beaches were open, although a local ocean-swimming group had chosen to pause its routine. That is a snapshot from 3 October 2026, not a current beach-status update.
