Caracals are exceptionally rare and threatened in India, but current official sources do not establish how many remain nationwide or show that extinction is imminent. The “on the brink” warning reflects serious concern about the species’ Indian status—not a confirmed current population assessment. Globally, the caracal is classified as Least Concern; that does not describe its precarious, fragmented distribution in India.
What “on the brink of extinction” means for caracals in India
India-specific concern and global conservation status are different measures. The 2025 government report describes the caracal (Caracal caracal) as globally Least Concern, while characterizing its occurrence in India as limited, rare and fragmented. It is listed in CITES Appendix I and Schedule I of India’s Wild Life (Protection) Act, 1972. These classifications do not provide a current count of caracals in India or establish a national extinction probability. National Tiger Conservation Authority and Wildlife Institute of India, Status of Small Cats in Tiger Landscapes of India (2025).

A September 2023 government progress report warned that the caracal “might be on the verge of extinction” and needed immediate attention to understand its status, population trends and conservation concerns. The wording is a warning about an evidence-poor, threatened Indian population, not a quantified prediction that the species will disappear by a particular date. That report cited a study estimating that the caracal’s extent of occurrence in India had contracted by 95.5% from its historical range. The figure is attributed to Khandal et al. (2020), as reported in 2023; it is not a new measurement made in 2023. Wildlife Institute of India and Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change, IDWH progress report (September 2023).
Where caracals are recorded in India
The 2025 government status report names Rajasthan, Gujarat and Madhya Pradesh, with occurrence focused in parts of western and central India. A fragmented distribution means that records from one reserve or state cannot be treated as evidence of a widespread, connected population. The available material does not establish a current, comprehensive map of occupied habitat across the country. NTCA and WII, 2025.

What the population figures do—and do not—tell us
There is no reliable current national abundance estimate in the cited government material. The available numbers refer to specific places, older studies or camera-trap records, and none is a nationwide census.
| Evidence | What was reported | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| Earlier estimates cited in the 2025 status report | About 10–15 individuals in Kutch and fewer than 50 in Rajasthan, attributed to earlier studies (Singh et al. 2014). | Historical, state-specific estimates—not a current census or a national total. NTCA and WII, 2025. |
| Ministry meeting record, 2018 | Two to three dozen caracals in northern and western Kachchh; population in other states recorded as unknown. | An older estimate restricted to part of Kachchh; it cannot be generalized to India today. Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change, Standing Committee minutes (2018). |
| Tiger-estimation camera-trap data | Two photo captures in one grid in 2018; 19 captures in seven grids in 2022. | Survey detections, not animals counted. The analysis supported only naïve occupancy estimation; the report mapped occupancy only in Ranthambore. The records do not establish a national population increase. NTCA and WII, 2025. |
Photo captures are not equivalent to unique individuals: an animal may be photographed more than once, and sparse detections can leave much of a species’ range unrepresented. The 2018 and 2022 figures show that caracals were recorded in those survey grids, but the report says the spatial data were too limited for a robust occupancy estimate. They cannot answer “How many caracals are left in India?”

What threatens caracals, and what is known about conflict
The 2025 government report identifies habitat loss and fragmentation, human-wildlife conflict, retaliatory killings and international trade among threats. It also says there are no reports of conflict with humans in India. That distinction matters: the report lists conflict and retaliation as concerns, but does not document human conflict as a well-established current driver in India. NTCA and WII, 2025.
What India’s conservation plan proposes
On 4 August 2026, the Wildlife Institute of India announced a Conservation Action Plan for the caracal, fishing cat and clouded leopard, prepared under the Government of India–UNDP–GEF-7 project. WII described it as a national framework informed by scientific review, spatial analysis and consultation. Its stated priorities include landscape-specific management, monitoring, habitat restoration, capacity building and policy measures. The announcement describes recommended actions; it does not establish that they have already been implemented or produced measurable recovery. What would clarify the caracal’s future in India
The most important missing evidence is a dedicated, repeatable assessment of where caracals persist and how their numbers change across India. Camera-trap detections from tiger-estimation landscapes help document presence, but sparse records and restricted occupancy estimates do not replace systematic monitoring across the species’ fragmented range. Without a credible national baseline and repeated surveys, neither the present population nor the pace of change can be stated confidently.
