Why Orcas and Dolphins Are Unlikely to Evolve Back to Life on Land

A 2023 model of mammalian evolution found no supported return from fully aquatic life to land—but “irreversible” is a model result, not proof of physical impossibility.

Orcas and dolphins are not expected to evolve back into land-living mammals under the best-supported model in a 2023 study of mammalian evolution. The study calls transitions to fully aquatic life “irreversible” in its model—not physically impossible for all time. Its “point of no return” is a boundary between degrees of aquatic adaptation, not a moment when an animal becomes unable to touch land.

What the study found

In “Dollo meets Bergmann: morphological evolution in secondary aquatic mammals,” published in Proceedings of the Royal Society B on 12 July 2023, Bruna M. Farina, Søren Faurby and Daniele Silvestro modeled aquatic adaptation across 5,635 mammal species. Their dataset included living and recently extinct mammals.

The authors compared evolutionary models describing how mammal lineages shift between levels of aquatic adaptation. The best-supported model allowed movement both ways between fully terrestrial and semi-aquatic life. Once a lineage crossed into the study’s more strongly aquatic states, however, the model did not support a return to terrestriality.

As the authors put it: “Our analyses show a similar pattern within mammals, where evolution to aquatic environments occurred in several lineages, and transitions to fully aquatic life were inferred to be irreversible.” Here, “inferred” matters: this is a result from a comparative evolutionary model, not a direct observation of animals attempting to return to land.

What “point of no return” means

The paper groups mammals by how strongly they are adapted to aquatic life. Its states run from A0, fully terrestrial, through A1, semi-aquatic, to A2 and A3, more strongly aquatic through fully aquatic. The modeled threshold lies between A1 and A2—not at a single instant in an animal’s life or in the history of a species.

Study state General meaning Modeled direction of change
A0 Fully terrestrial Movement between A0 and A1 was possible in both directions in the best-supported model.
A1 Semi-aquatic; animals retain efficient movement on land The model allowed a return from A1 to A0.
A2–A3 Strongly aquatic through fully aquatic; terrestrial capacity is greatly reduced The best-supported model allowed movement toward greater aquatic specialization, but did not support a return from these states to terrestriality.

These categories describe evolutionary states in the analysis; they are not a checklist that says every species within a category has identical anatomy or behavior. Orcas and dolphins are cetaceans, and cetaceans are classified among the fully aquatic lineages in this context.

Does this mean dolphins can never walk or live on land?

No. The model concerns changes across generations in a lineage’s way of life. It does not mean an individual dolphin or orca cannot be stranded, briefly hauled out, or physically placed on land. Nor does it prove that every conceivable future evolutionary path is impossible.

The finding is narrower: after a lineage becomes strongly aquatic, a return to a terrestrial lifestyle was not supported by the model that best fit the mammal data. “Effectively irreversible in the study’s evolutionary model” is more precise than saying scientists proved that land life can never evolve again.

Why strong aquatic specialization may be difficult to reverse

Adaptation to water involves linked changes rather than a single switch. The paper discusses locomotion and sensory specialization, limb reduction, changes in feeding and reproduction, lung capacity, and body size. As these traits accumulate, the body and way of life become increasingly specialized for an aquatic environment; the study does not identify one change as the sole cause of the modeled pattern.

Body size and heat balance

Across the mammalian dataset, transitions toward aquatic life were associated with increased relative body mass. The authors suggest that heat retention may help explain this pattern: water conducts heat more effectively than air, so retaining heat can matter for aquatic mammals. The association varied among lineages, and the paper does not establish body-size increase as a single cause of irreversibility.

Diet and energy demands

Aquatic transitions were also associated with more carnivorous diets. Diet, body size and other adaptations develop within the particular circumstances of each lineage; the comparison does not show that every aquatic mammal eats the same way or that diet alone prevents a return to land.

How Dollo’s Law applies to orcas and dolphins

The authors relate their result to Dollo’s Law: the idea that complex evolutionary changes generally do not reverse in precisely the same way. In this case, “irreversible” is a practical shorthand for a reversal that the best-supported model did not infer—not a claim that evolution obeys an absolute rule making reversal logically impossible.

Orcas and dolphins belong to cetaceans, a lineage of mammals that made a secondary transition to aquatic life. The model’s result concerns that deep lineage-level shift. It does not predict that an individual animal will change its habitat, or provide a timetable for what a lineage might do in the distant future.

How large was the study, and what can its numbers tell us?

Farina, Faurby and Silvestro’s 2023 dataset covered 5,635 mammal species: 5,449 (96.7%) were fully terrestrial, while 186 (3.3%) were semi-aquatic or fully aquatic. Those figures describe the composition of the analyzed dataset, not the proportion of all mammals that will ever evolve toward water. The study’s main conclusion comes from comparing modeled evolutionary transitions across the species, not from treating the smaller aquatic group as a forecast.

What the headline should—and should not—say

  • Supported: In the best-supported model, transitions to fully aquatic life were inferred to be irreversible, with no supported return from the strongly aquatic states to a terrestrial one.
  • Supported: The result applies to evolutionary lineages, including fully aquatic cetaceans such as orcas and dolphins.
  • Not established: That a physical law makes a return to land impossible under every future circumstance.
  • Not established: That one trait, such as body size or diet, alone caused the pattern.

So the “point of no return” is a vivid description of a modeled evolutionary threshold. It captures the study’s finding, provided it is understood as a strong pattern in comparative evidence rather than a guarantee about every possible future.
