Check with regulators and a cervid-experienced veterinarian before buying animals; there is no reliable universal startup budget or profit estimate.
Requirements vary by jurisdiction. For example, Idaho requires facility inspection and approval before stocking, while North Carolina says reindeer and caribou are susceptible to chronic wasting disease (CWD) and does not allow their import. These examples are not a substitute for checking the rules where your farm is located.
Start with local rules, not an animal purchase
Ask your state or provincial agriculture and wildlife authorities how reindeer are classified where you plan to keep them. They may be treated as livestock, regulated cervids, exotic wildlife, or another category. Confirm whether you need permits or a license and whether there are requirements for facility inspection, fencing, animal identification, inventories, records, breeding, public exhibition, slaughter, or sale.
Rules can differ even between nearby jurisdictions. Idaho’s State Department of Agriculture lists fencing, gathering systems, annual inventory, and recordkeeping among its cervidae-facility requirements; facilities must be inspected and approved before animals are introduced. North Carolina’s Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services identifies reindeer and caribou as CWD-susceptible and does not allow their import. These are jurisdiction-specific examples, not universal rules.
#1 Best Overall
- Widely Application: The electric fence tester can only be used to test standard duty, low impedance electric fences. You can use it checking power on the electric fence around the garden, small enough to carry in a pocket. You have to hide it or put something over the top of it like that to see the light because in direct sunlight the neon light will not show up very well. The higher the voltage, the brighter the neon lamp.
- Easy To Use: The electric fence voltage checker can test voltage levels on your fence line and fence controller, finding fence faults. Hook the metal loop on top to the wire, stick the probe in the earth. Just hang it on the fence and stick the probe in the ground under the fence. This product is only suitable for use in environments with temperatures ranging from 0 ℃ to 40 ℃ and relative humidity ≤ 80%; At the same time, the storage conditions of the equipment must meet the requirements of temperature -20 ° C~50 ° C and relative humidity ≤ 85%.
- Neon Lamps, Not LED: The electric fence voltage tester, neon lamps indicates voltage levels from 0.6kv to 7kv (600 volts to 7000 volts). It uses neon bulbs, not LEDs to show voltage, neons are durable and can handle thousands of volts, much easier to read in shade or in evening light.
- Dim Lights And Neon Principle: The electric fence testers have a pulse low voltage wire fence, make sure the wires are not touching anything metal by using plastic insulation to attach wires to your fence posts. The tester does not use batteries, and thus works on the principle of the fence high voltage exciting a neon bulb. As such, the light will never be bright, due to the technology of the bulbs. You CAN use it in sunlight, please kindly use your hand to shade the lights and it did the trick-- they will NOT be bright, but they ARE visible. Keep one on hand for regular fence line .
- Tips Before Use: ALLOSUN fence tester can be matched to any animal control situation, offering both budget and design flexibility. You got to remember not the hits that touch the poly wire before you test. It is recommended to verify the tester's operation by measuring a known electric fence before use. Low voltages may be the issue that not being able to see the lights in bright sunshine.
Before making plans around a particular parcel, contact the relevant agriculture or wildlife department, animal-health authority, county or local zoning office, and land manager. Ask about possession, facility approval, movement, exhibition, breeding, and the sales channel you intend to use.
Animal sourcing, movement, and health
Do not assume a seller’s ability to offer reindeer means you can legally receive or keep them. USDA APHIS regulates U.S. imports of cervids, including reindeer, under country-specific requirements. States may impose additional restrictions, as North Carolina’s import policy illustrates. Rules may depend on the source, destination, purpose, and current animal-health status.
Before paying a deposit, ask the relevant animal-health authorities what permits, certificates, testing, identification, and movement documents apply to the exact animals and route. Ask for the source herd’s documentation, and develop quarantine and biosecurity procedures with a veterinarian experienced in cervids or reindeer.

Discuss preventive care, parasite monitoring, breeding, emergencies, and veterinary availability with that veterinarian before selecting animals. A 2023 study, Reindeer Husbandry in Switzerland—Management, Feeding, and Endoparasite Infections, found gastrointestinal strongyles in 46 of 67 sampled animals (68.6%) across the study’s captive herds. That result describes those sampled Swiss animals; it is not a prediction of prevalence on another farm.

Plan for secure, locally compliant containment and a practical gathering and handling system. The Idaho State Department of Agriculture identifies fencing and gathering systems as facility requirements, but specifications should be confirmed with the authority responsible for your farm. Do not rely on a generic fence height, acreage, or online product to meet local cervid requirements.
Plan for dependable feed and water, storage, handling, observation, and access for veterinary care. In the 2023 Swiss study, all surveyed herds had roughage available ad libitum and received supplementary feed formulated for reindeer or other browsers. This reports observed practice; it is not a universal ration. Select feed, including any reindeer feed pellets, with qualified advice based on the animals, site, and season.

Build a realistic daily and seasonal care plan with an experienced veterinarian and knowledgeable keepers. It should address routine observation, preventive care, parasite monitoring, breeding, quarantine, biosecurity, handling, and emergencies. The available research does not establish a universal labor requirement or care protocol for every farm.
Choose a permitted business model before building a budget
Potential uses for reindeer do not automatically mean that a particular activity is legal, practical, or commercially viable at your location. First identify the activity you want to pursue—such as breeding, exhibition, or another permitted use—and confirm the applicable rules and likely buyers. Do not treat novelty as proof of demand.

If the plan involves meat, ask state and local authorities about slaughter, inspection, processing, labeling, and sales requirements, then contact facilities to confirm whether they can accept reindeer. If the plan involves public visits, check zoning and exhibition rules and budget for visitor safety, insurance, staffing, and facilities. For live-animal sales, confirm licensing, health documentation, and movement requirements.

Build a local enterprise budget
The sources reviewed do not establish current universal reindeer prices, startup totals, operating costs, revenues, or payback periods. Estimate costs for the actual site and intended business model rather than borrowing a generic livestock budget.
| Budget area | Questions to answer |
|---|---|
| Regulatory compliance | What permits, inspections, records, testing, and movement requirements apply, and what will they cost? |
| Facilities | What approved fencing, gathering and handling systems, water access, storage, and other site work are required? |
| Feed and care | What feed is available locally, what supplemental feed may be needed, and what are veterinary and preventive-care costs? |
| Animals and transport | What is the delivered cost from a lawful source, and what documentation, transport, quarantine, and contingency arrangements are needed? |
| Labor and operations | Who will handle routine care, recordkeeping, repairs, emergencies, and any customer or visitor activity? |
| Sales channel | Which activities are permitted, who are the likely buyers or customers, and what processing, insurance, marketing, or access costs apply? |
Ask for local quotes, verify regulatory requirements in writing where possible, and model lower-than-expected sales as well as unexpected facility, feed, veterinary, or transport costs. If the plan only works on optimistic assumptions, it is not ready.

- Identify the exact location and intended use. Start with the parcel, jurisdiction, and business activity—not a general idea of farming reindeer.
- Contact regulators. Ask the relevant agriculture or wildlife department, animal-health authority, and local zoning office about permits, facility approval, movement, CWD controls, and the intended activity.
- Get specialist advice. Find a veterinarian familiar with cervids or reindeer and discuss preventive care, feed, parasite monitoring, quarantine, biosecurity, and emergencies.
- Confirm a lawful source and transport plan. Verify documentation and movement requirements for the source, destination, animals, and route before committing to a purchase.
- Price the facility and care plan. Obtain local estimates for approved containment, gathering systems, feed, veterinary services, labor, transport, and ongoing compliance.
- Validate the business model. Confirm that the intended activity is permitted and identify actual buyers, customers, or facilities before projecting revenue.
- Buy animals only when the plan is ready. Proceed only after regulatory, facility, veterinary, transport, and market questions have workable answers.
When reindeer might fit a farm
Reindeer might be worth considering when local authorities confirm a viable legal pathway, the farm can meet approved facility and care requirements, suitable veterinary and feed support is available, and the operator has a permitted business model with locally tested demand.

The idea is a poor fit when the plan assumes rules are the same everywhere, relies on unapproved facilities, lacks a cervid-experienced veterinarian, or treats possible uses as guaranteed income. The evidence reviewed does not support a blanket claim that reindeer farming is easy or profitable.
FAQ
Can I keep reindeer on my farm?
Possibly, but the answer depends on local classification, permits, facility requirements, and animal-health rules. Contact the authorities responsible for your exact location before acquiring animals.
Can I import reindeer into my state?
Do not assume so. USDA APHIS has country-specific rules for importing cervids, and states can add restrictions. North Carolina, for example, does not allow reindeer imports. Check current requirements with federal and destination-state authorities for the proposed source and route.
What facilities do reindeer need?
Requirements depend on the jurisdiction and operation. Idaho’s cervidae-facility guidance includes fencing, gathering systems, annual inventory, and records, and requires inspection and approval before animals are introduced. Confirm the applicable specifications with your local regulator.
